Ashes to Ashes Series 3 (may contain Spoilers)

Yep, that were right goodly, that were.

I know it was mentioned, but mine brain forgot....what happened to Sam? Pub?

Whoever wrote the ending to the US Life on Mars needs to watch that, and then never put pen to paper again.

So who's going to be the first one to complain... or ask for a third show?

I think that may be the best ending to a series I've ever seen... need time to process it.
I hope they don't spoil it by making a third show.

They're not planning on it, they said they have nothing more to say about Gene after that ending.

Whoever wrote the ending to the US Life on Mars needs to watch that, and then never put pen to paper again.

They were interviewing the creators and asked them if they ever thought of a different ending and they said "We did think about having them all on a spaceship." think that tells you what they thought to that.

Ok, I won't see it until later tonight, so I skipping all the comments for now!

I thought I would post something I was playing around with today, it's a tribute pic in the style of another show ending this week...

Hope you guys don't think it's too cheesy!

I guess I'll be the one who'll be slightly disappointed. Gene essentially being a metaphysical cop shrink? I suppose so... at the very least they hinted at it in season 2. At the very least I expected Alex to somehow survive and break out rather than be... well, dead all this time.

I guess they forgot the original ending to Life on Mars, where the girl turns off the screen? I genuinely expected something more on the nose than what we got.

Funny enough, I guess I half called it ages ago with my idea that this was all, in some part, Gene's wishfulfillment fantasy. It's not exactly his delusion, but certainly he gets something out of every cop he has to deal with.

I'm sure people would have hated it, but it would have been funny if they got the dude from the US Life on Mars to show up as the last cop. Since he's Irish anyway, it would have worked... and it would have let them retcon the US series.

^ No, he means Jason O'Mara, who played Sam in the US version set in New York. (Colm Meaney played Gene, but in the aborted L.A. version which only got one episode.)

they already retcon Dixon on Doc Green into the show, I think it is much better the US series be quietly forgotten.

^ Speak for yourself...I loved the US series. (Assuming I'm allowed to say that in this thread, of course. ;) )

The ending doesn't really bother me, since I don't think it's real either.

Three reasons:

- Notice that the control room of the Mars lander has 70's decorations all over it.

- As Sam is waking up inside his capsule, we hear doctors' voices saying "We're losing him!" like he's still in a coma and they're trying to wake him up

- See the boot that steps out onto the Martian surface? It's Gene's - with his 1973 clothes.

Besides, you really can't hate anything with Harvey Keitel in it. :techman:

And the above reasons (in my spoilercode) are why I believe that a US Ashes is possible, although if they agree with my view of the ending, they will probably have to make it about Annie rather than invent a US Alex. (Go ahead and *try* to tell me you don't, on some level, want another series with Gretchen Mol. ;) ) Here's how I think they'd do that:

Remember that one scene in the final US episode where Sam sees himself, on TV, visiting an elderly Annie in hospital in 2010. I'm going with the fact that this is the real ending. Sam eventually gets home, finds that everything that happened in 1973 was real, and goes to visit Annie.

I thought the ending to Ashes to Ashes was very emotional and could be ranked as one of my favorite series endings. It answers some nagging questions and alludes to the possible answers of others. In the end, I didn't want to let go of Chris, Shaz, Ray, Alex, or Gene. They've grown to become friends of mine during my watching of the show and though I knew this day was coming, a part of me wish it never happened. The British sure know how to conclude a story.

Cheers to the cast and crew of Ashes to Ashes.:techman:

Perfect Ending, Although I did crack up a few times at Keats wild Devil impersonation.

I didn't mind though, and thought I was worried how they would tie up Sam's story, considering the complications in the story and the fact that Simm likely wouldn't appear, but the suggestion that Gene took him to the railway arms said it all perfectly.

Ray's suicide was intense, The others were interesting, but his death was just an amazing scene for the character.

Perfect, just perfect. :techman:

They will all be missed. Instantly one of my favorite shows ever, to be discussed for a long time.

^ No, he means Jason O'Mara, who played Sam in the US version set in New York. (Colm Meaney played Gene, but in the aborted L.A. version which only got one episode.)

Yeah.

Another way they could have done it is have Gene show up in NYC and have him do the Harvey Keitel version of the character... then end the show with, "Right, guess it's time to show these bloody Yanks how we do this in cheery old England" or something.

^ I remember reading that when the US version was just getting off the ground, Harvey Keitel called up Philip Glenister who was very star-struck at hearing from him. :D

It would be interesting if US Gene was God....

Well all this talk has, I admit, got me thinking. There's no way for me to catch this show in the US but if it comes out on Blu-Ray I'll consider a blind buy.

Still won't change my position that I enjoy the US Life on Mars though. Sorry about that.

Nothing really bad about the US version really. It just tried too hard to mimic the original and the only thing they did was a twist that was inconsequential.

That said, I feel like there could have been a happy medium between the "realistic" ending of the US Life on Mars and the metaphysical ending they used in Ashes to Ashes.

In fact, the more I think about it, the more it cheapens Sam's suicide in the original Life on Mars. Oh well.

I freely admit my viewpoint is influenced by the fact that the US version is set in New York City, which I love (my touristy obsession with NYC is obvious - just ask around). If they'd kept using L.A., as in the original pilot, I probably wouldn't have liked it as much.

firehawk, did you read my spoilercode? What do you think? Is it theoretically possible? If they based a US Ashes on that, would that work?
