Ascension (Syfy & CBC Miniseries)

Danny99

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I'm now four episodes through the Canadian run of this six part miniseries and I just don't know what to make of it.

There seems to be a lot of story lines, none of which are given their due. Nothing is fleshed out (except Tricia Helfer in a scene in Part Four), but the concept keeps bringing me back.

I think it could have done better if it had been expanded to a full season run to give everything it's due.

maybe not a full 22 ep season but a 13 ep season.

Perhaps giving the big reveal away so early was probably a bit of a mistake.

Danny, in America, Ascension was aired as three episodes over the course of three consecutive nights.

We almost didn't have enough breathing room to notice how shit it was.

I've been keeping up with the Canadian run of it, too. I find it an interesting and enjoyable show, though already they seem to be repeating storylines. Like just how many on that ship were lined up to be XO that there seems to be someone every week going on about they deserved.

Though to be honest, given the current direction of the story, I don't see how they could maintain it for much beyond this season/miniseries.

Anyone know anything about whether the show is going to continue? I remember before it aired in the US there being talk that a second season could happen depending on the ratings, but since they I haven't heard anything either way.

It also aired in the UK as a 3-part series. There was some interesting ideas there but I'm still not sure it worked entierly. The reveal came a bit too early and perhaps a slight re-ordering of the scens set of Ascension might have helped a bit. I don't think it has the legs for a long run but they might be able to get another limited series out if it say no more than 10 episodes to fully develop the story, the worse outcome would be trying to extend it for too long.

I agree that it probably couldn't have sustained a long run, but it needed more than six episodes or needed to pick and choose which story lines they went with.

I'll leave this vague, but it does end in a way that makes you want more. At least I thought it did. I do agree that it probably would work best if it was kept to shorter seasons.

They can reuse the premise.

Resurrection about the returned finished a month ago.

The Returned about resurrection started tonight.

Having just finished the finale, I am mostly satisfied. It was an entertaining and engaging story. Although, at the same time I'm also kind of disappointed there won't be any continuation. It was clear when they were making this they were expecting it to be picked up as a regular series, while I'm thinking they should have tried more to keep it a self-contained story that wraps up, maybe still keeping the cliffhanger as a potential launching point for a possible continuation.

I wasn't as satisfied. Renewing my earlier complaints, the writers tried to jam pack too much into six hours that would've been better served over a longer stretch. I also didn't understand the need to have Tricia Helfer naked or half naked in each episode outside of the finale.

The idea was good, but the creative team dropped the ball in making it such a short run.

Did it serve a point? No, probably not. Am I complaining? Certainly not.

Ironically, a problem SyFy shows have had in the past is they don't have enough story material to fill twenty episode seasons the shows get ordered for, resulting in less than desirable filler episodes. Ascension, on the other hand probably could have filled a twenty episode season no problem. In fact, the big twist would have been an awesome way to end the tenth episode when they go on mid-season break.
