As you learn more, does excitement go up or down?

Star Treks

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
After first learning the very basics of Trex XI - Abrams is somehow involved, it will take place early in Trek history - casting details, teaser trailer, writing details, and little snippets of info have leaked steadily for quite a while.

My question is, basically: overall, has you interest in or excitement about the movie gone up or down as you've learned more? Were you initially skeptical but are now very optimistic? Were you initially hopeful but now have given up on it being any good?

Do the details encourage or discourage you?

I am currently in a state of mild pessimism. This state has not changed for several months.

My interest in this project has generally climbed. Although, I found certain casting choices a little odd, there's nothing that's gone on that would make me punch my monitor and scream, "they raped my childhood!" A lot of the rumors have been stupid, but rumors often are. Most of everything I've seen tells me that talented people are working on this, taking it seriously, and putting together something I'll want to see, even if it's just to see what they've done with the old girl.

I guess it really depends on what the new information is.

For me, after the initial excitement that we really are--really, really are--going to get a new movie, most everything since has been interesting, but I can't say my level of excitement has gone up.

Q : As you learn more, does excitment go up or down ?

A : Learn more what ? We got nothing I tell you, nothing at all, no information to go on, so how can we have any excitment when there's not a blasted thing to be excited about ?

* I'm looking forward to the film actually *

The only time my excitment went down a little was when I initially heard it was going to be a TOS movie. But since then, everything that we have gotten has raised my excitement higher and higher. I don't think I've ever been this pumped for a movie before.

Not to cop out, but I would take a little from column A and a little from column B. It's kinda like a roller coaster ride:

They're casting Nimoy...Ohhh, hit a bump. Check out the new Enterprise...Wheeee!! it's going to involve time travel...Oh God, let me off, I think I'm going to be sick. The guy who's making it is fairly talented...Ok, I'll just keep my eyes closed and hang on for dear life.

Kinda like that.

It's been like the stock market for me.

Initially, very excited, as I found the Berman years of Trek to be pretty banal. After Enterprise and Nemesis, I thought Star Trek would keep getting worse, not better. Though I don't think J.J. Abrams is the genius some people say he is -- "Lost" is just a soap operatic version of "The Mysterious Island," and MI:3 was like an expensive but so-so episode of the original series -- I was encouraged because A) he wasn't Berman or Braga, and B) he claimed respect for Star Trek in some way. There was talk about the canyon from the Gorn fight making another appearance, etc., that made me think finally, after all these years, something cool and retro was going to be done.

Then I began to see glimpses of costumes and the CGI Enterprise, and it began to look like more of the same. That wasn't encouraging, and my interest went down again. Worse, then I read Abrams' comment that more or less he wasn't initially all that much a fan of the original series, which not only contradicted what I thought I understood about him but also made me wonder why do the film in the first place.

However, the information about the Playmates figures having uniforms similar to the original series, Bana not looking like a Frankenstein version of Romulans, and the story potentially involving parallel universes made me think it might all work. I'm disappointed that Shatner won't be in the movie -- Nimoy by himself isn't a huge draw for me -- but done right, this may be the best "Spock" episode ever, topping even "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan."

pretty much ditto, Originally I had my cynical face on (i.e. my normal expression), but the more I've seen of it the more excited I've become. the teaser trailer was spine tingling in a way I don't usually find shots of sweaty men welding :p

I was probably getting more excited, but the recent quote attributed to Abrams that hinted a someone dying has me . . . worried so I'm a little less excited now.

I don't agree, plenty of info is out. We don't know anything about it, except for the writers, director, main stars, some of the supporting cast, what the teaser Enterprise looks like, the presence of Nimoy, some interiors (if you checked that out), rumors, high-level hints about plot, publications' predictions for box office, photos snuck from the set....

in other words, there's plenty to know compared to the nothing of a while back.

I've been excited about this movie since it was first announced and get more and more excited the more I hear about it.

I was the same way with the 1989 Batman movie.

They're making a live-action Batman. Cooool!

Michael Keaton's playing Batman. Don't you mean Joker?

Check out the batsuit by Dune's Bob Ringwood! Sweet! Anyone would look good in that!

The movie's being directed by Tim Burton. Of Beetlejuice and... uh, Frankenweenie fame?

Kim Basinger's the love interest. She's fun to look at!

Jack Nicholson's the Joker! Better ten years late than never, I suppose.

Danny Elfman's doing the soundtrack! Lead singer of Oingo Boingo? He does that?

Wanna see the Batmobile? Holy Corvette on steroids, Batman!

Music by Prince. Fucking what?

So yeah, I can relate.

Less excited.

This "time travel prequel" is probably the worst way to bring Trek back to the big screen. Time travel episodes are usually the worst in Trek, IMO, and it takes away from the "credibility" of the Trek universe.

Basically I anticipate knowing what rape feels like after I see the movie.

Edited to add quotations

And as far as I'm concerned, none of that tells me anything about whether this is going to be a good movie. The people behind the scenes have done some great stuff and some awful stuff, so that's a wash. The cast? Don't know much about most of them other than their names. I've seen very few images and none really showed anything clearly. And hints, rumours, and predictions count for exactly zero when it comes to actually knowing anything.

So how did you feel about the finished product? Personaly, I thought it was great; Well, except for that god aweful, out of place prince music.

I'm essentially indifferent to it at this point. I have no (major) problem with it being a TOS movie and I liked a lot of the early casting. Then I learned it involved time travel, and a lot of the later casting left me cold. I know very well I'm going to go and see it but I have no expectations, great or otherwise.

Doesn't really answer the question but that's all I can say.

More excited, as long as I stay away from the groaners...

"I don't like Abrams", "I don't like the teaser", "I don't like how the Ent. looks" "I don't think I'm going to like it." Bitch! Bitch! Bitch!

I know they have the right to their own opinions but such negativity before it even freaking comes out, really brings me down.
