Arrow - Season 3

Arrow started as a show I barely paid attention to... to something that's actually quite thrilling. I was really into this finale, even though Ra'sh was killed far too easily given how invincible he was before that.

I love that they called in the Flash to help out... but it is awfully convenient he couldn't be around to stop the virus being released...

I'm not sure he would have been that much help.

They didn't know where or how it was going to be release and as fast as Barry Allen is, there's only one of him and it still takes time to get from place to place.

IOW no guarentee he could have stopped it or been any more effective than Team Arrow.

What's "awfully convenient" is when Oliver shows up to aid Barry against the Reverse Flash he magically brings along a weapon that actually makes him useful in the fight. (Ray Palmer nanobots that slow RF down, somehow) Makes you wonder why he was holding them back.

The entire show often doesn't make sense

I recently binge watched the entire show after i took a break halfway into season 1 and at some point i wanted to start a drinking game everytime someone "hacked" into anything (doesn't matter if it's a private PC or some ultrasecret and powerful organization, it can be done in minutes on the show) or why they brought bows to gun fights.

I'm not usually very perceptive when it comes to logic loopholes in shows or movies but with Arrow i'm regularly spotting at least one of them per episode, it's become a secondary form of entertainment for me

However i do like it even though Flash, for me, is superior in most ways and had a far better season finale this time (and for the shows i watch it was the best season finale this year).

No, that was an older man who worked for Darhk. Who was used as a decoy. Some did think that was really Darhk lying so he could escape. But I never believed that.

Neal is a huge improvement from the guy who played Ra's AL Ghul last year!

Neal McDonough's a good choice -- and an ironic one, since he actually played Green Arrow in a 2010 DC Showcase animated short. He's also Dum-Dum Dugan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, of course, but he was also Bruce Banner in the '90s animated Incredible Hulk, Firebrand in one episode of the '90s Iron Man, Deadshot in the Batman: Assault on Arkham animated movie, and Flash and Nightwing in the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game.

I didn't realize McDonough had done some many comic roles. I knew about the Green Arrow DC Showcase, and Dum Dum Dugan but that was it.
I'm a big fan of his so I look forward to seeing him here.

Very excited about this casting news. I've been a fan of McDonough's work going back to First Contact. He's a great choice to play the main villain.

Poolside is a great choice and, yes, definitely a big improvement over Nable. Heck, he's a bigger grab than Bennett and Barrowman.

They did a good job here, especially for such an obscure character. (Did he ever appeared outside of New Earth?)

Season 3 Roundup:

  • I absolutely loved what they did with Thea. In season 1, she was just a rich party girl, then in season 2, she gets little to do, then this season, she undergoes training, displays some rather impressive skill when needed, and ultimately becomes a bow & arrow wielding hero in her own right. Quite the change, the likes of which I've not seen since The Mask of Zorro. She was one of this season's highlights and I can't wait to see what comes next.

  • They got Laurel into the Black Canary role very quickly, so quickly that it makes sense that she's unprepared.

  • Matthew Nable was servicable as Ra's al Ghul but I spent a lot of time wishing it was Oded Fehr.

  • When season 2 ended, I was a bit excited that we were going to see Ollie in Hong Kong but unfortunately that turned out to be a dud.

  • Ollie's mid-season death was something. It was an eye-popping moment in the sense that they went there but you knew he'd be back thanks to the lazarus pit. That of course didn't happen and the resolution we got was a bit of a letdown. He gets stabbed through the chest, kicked off the side of a cliff and then is left to die shirtless in the cold. Then a couple of episodes later, he's fine thanks to some good old-fashioned bed time, tea and bandaging. They could have handled this better. Miraculously though, it didn't take any credibility away from the show, unlike that eye-gouging moment on Gotham.

  • The show continues to push the envelope with Ollie being outed as the Arrow, thus ending his career. They ended that pivotal episode at the wrong time though. They should have ended it before Arsenal showed up to rescue Ollie from custody. Back on point though, I can't wait to see how they move forward from here. Never mind Detective Lance, is the public going to forget that Oliver Queen was suspected to be the Arrow and that he could very well be this new Green guy?

  • I loved the Flash cameo at Nanda Parbat. This is a world of ancient sword-wielding warriors in the far east, then we see a guy in bright red flashy tights who could move really fast and take them down with little effort. Quite the juxtaposition there. That's one scene I'll remember.

  • Guy totally called Atom's intro with the explosion. See his post here.

  • I look forward to seeing more of Tatsu as Katana next season. She will be there next season, right?

They might be combing Damien Dahrk with Doctor Darkk, who was a member of the League of Assassins, introduced in the 70s.

I like the show but I've always found the flashbacks to be intensely uninteresting. Just feels like a complete waste of time. The Hong Kong stuff in Season 3 in particular.

Well, at most this format will only be around for 2 more years, the the flashbacks will have caught up with the pilot. If the show sticks around beyond that, it will likely change. Who lnows, maybe we will get flashforwards then.
Or flashsideways into paralell earth stories?

Funny, it was only the season three flashbacks that didn't do it for me. Season 1, and season 2 in particular, were awesome!

I liked the season 1 flashbacks an tolerated the season 2 Flashbacks, but I was really bored of the season 3 flashbacks. I mean, I like Katana, but it really felt like they could have told that whole Hong Kong story in half the time.

I didn't mind the season 3 flashbacks, but they were definitely the least interesting flashbacks we got.
I wouldn't mind seeing them start giving us more flashbacks for other characters if the show goes on long enough for Ollie's to catch up to the pilot.
