Arriving after all: "Fade In: The Making of Star Trek Insurrection" by Michael Piller

You may beg my pardon, but you will not receive it so cheaply. Words matter less than effort. If you do not understand me, and wish to, try harder. Do not expect me to do all the work for you.

I think we should take this into the Conversations function if further discussion is needed.

I think the reason it's so expensive is because it's being categorized as a text book, so it's being given a textbook price, not just a standard hardcover or paperback price.

"I beg your pardon" is an idiom indicating a lack of understanding and a desire for clarification, it doesn't mean that someone is literally begging for your pardon. Don't Amelia Bedelia things.

The point is, if you can understand common idioms, then you can also try to understand metaphors and other linguistic devices, if you want to. And I would argue that at least on this side of the Atlantic "begging one's pardon" does include a bit of apology, if the person saying it expects the other to choose to continue to engage them.

Now, who's buying the Insurrection book for $95, and who's Googling to download a copy? I've read it if anyone would like to discuss. The Ian McKellan Vulcan/Picard scene could have been far more memorable than anything we got.

That's actually a really good point, and even though I have no issue with the price tag as I have no intention of purchasing the book, that makes a lot of sense given the price tag of some academic text books I've purchased over the years.

As always, you've hit the nail on the head and know exactly what one means.

President Obama is getting close to the end of his time in office.

Who knows, you just might get a pardon.

Can he give them to non-Americans?

Not everyone needs things explained for them so simply. Don't be a dick.

Two things:
1) Please don't insult other users, that's against the rules and I'll be issuing you a warning for Flaming once I'm finished writing this post.

Words matter less than effort. If you do not understand me, and wish to, try harder. Do not expect me to do all the work for you.

2) It can be difficult to parse meaning simply from a written post and what seems straight-forward to you may not be to readers so the onus is on you as the writer to provide clarification when it's asked for. Your response is up to you of course, and being unhelpful isn't against the rules - just a request from me to keep this forum a friendly place for discussion for all TrekBBS users.

If you, or anyone else, has any questions or comments about either of these two points, please send me a private message.

Do not discuss it in this thread - please keep this thread to the discussion of the book.

Thank you :)

So then when someone is being rude or condescending to you on this bulletin board, you should not point it out to them. You seem to think that using a word like DICK is an insult while insulting BEHAVIOR is ok. It's one thing if you have Asperger's or something and can't understand, but otherwise you should be respectful of others at least until you know what they're saying.

So yeah? When is this being published then or if it's a vanity press, does that mean it's on a print on demand basis? Plus, has the front cover been updated?

I'm assuming it's print-on-demand.

From the Pillers' website: "Will be sold at the following Star Trek conventions": Las Vegas (Aug 3-7), Cherry Hill (Aug 26-28), Chicago (Sept 9-11), also Toronto Supernatural (Oct 7-9).

"Book purchases at Star Trek conventions come with a book bag and CD of Sandra Piller's 'Love Goes On'."
