Arex = Kelvin Alien?

WE HAVE AN ANSWER! From trekmovie.com:

TrekMovie: Regarding the alien security officer on the Kelvin, Alnschloss K’Bentayr, is that character in any way related to Arex from The Animated Series?

Roberto Orci: Not in our minds, but possibly in the designer’s. You would have to ask the designer.

^ I can't believe they didn't ask if K'Ben has a third arm or not! ;)

And also:

TrekMovie: Is the character make-up and puppetry, or CGI?

Roberto Orci: A little bit of both, mostly make-up and puppetry. That particular alien was actually was sitting on the set. JJ wanted to as much real stuff as possible, which is not typical for this type of movie in this day and age.

Yes! I was right. :D ;)
I guess that his eyelids (if his eyes blink) are cg-elements.

Of course, he could simply be a tip of the visual hat to Arex without being his species at all. If Paramount doesn't look at TAS as canon, the most they might authorize is co-opting a few visual elements from its wilder-looking alien races and that might be it.

^ That's very possible.

When we do get a full body shot, I imagine we'll see if there is any Arex influence or not. It'll come down to the limb count IMO.

When Roberto Orci said there was no relation in his mind,"...but possibly in the designer’s." It makes me wonder.

Is he saying that because he knows there's a third arm/leg? Or because he knows there isn't?

He could have 2 arms and still have been influenced by Arex though as he could have been designed with Arex as inspirtation but with 2 arms (or 4?)

Hahaha!

Sorry to bump an old thread, but did anyone realise that this alien is played by Kasia Kowalczyk, an actress, according to IMDb?

Poor ol' Arex, eh? He loses more than an arm and a leg. ;)

I didn't mention her by name, but back here I did ask whether K'Bentayr might be one of the two credited "Kelvin Alien" roles on the cast list. It seems "Kelvin Alien #1" now has been named. If "Arex" loses something, she also gains something(s).

Maybe it's SUPPOSED to be the TAS alien's species with revisions? Fewer limbs to make the CGI and makeup work easier on the actress underneath it all?

Of course, if they do make this guy the same species as Arex, then that means they are acknowledging TAS, and therefore would be required to acknowledge the existence of Robert April.

Nope, only what they use on screen would be inducted into canon.

It's been worked out and it seems April is out of the picture simply due to the fact the Enterprise seems to have been built at a later point in time than in the original timeline. With Pike being its first Captain, April must have had a different assignment during the period the Enterprise should have been on her first missions.

Besides, mentioning or not mentioning April wouldn't be "required" simply by Arex appearing in a film. Could be that Arex, in such a situation, is being declared "canon" but no other aspect of TAS is. At least not at that time.

We've seen Spock's hometown from TAS (at least its appearance) being made canon by the CGI guys at Trek Remastered. (Or, IS Trek Remastered truly canon? :p ) Other TAS elements have been at least mentioned over the years in various Trek shows, and thus made canon. In no such case, however, did ALL of TAS suddenly blossom into canonicity. Only the element(s) being used onscreen in live action Trek at that particular time.

On Thursdays.

But, in any case, it's not Arex of TAS!

The new alien is on the USS Kelvin, she's played by a female, and the alien's name is Alnschloss K'Bentayr of Monchezke. And is presumably killed by Nero long before TAS. She looks no more like Arex than a Bolian looks like a human.

If nothing else, we now know a Beta Quadrant planet from this time frame that isn't part of the Klingon or Romulan empires. So few BQ planets were named or seen before the Picard era that you'd think the entirety of the TREK universe during the 22nd and 23rd centuries took place within a relatively small vicinity of the Alpha Quadrant.

Bumping this since more word from official mouth is available

So, Arex = not Kelvin Alien

Barney Burman, prosthetics make-up head designer for Trek XI:

TM: Can you tell us whether or not you based the Kelvin security officer on Arex from the animated Star Trek series? What else can you tell us about Alnschloss K’Bentayr?

BB: The character of Alnschloss was not inspired nor based on Arex. I hope no one is too disappointed. It was based on an original design by the film’s amazing creature designer and a brilliant artist, Neville Page. JJ liked the design Neville had and asked if I could realize it as a character. It was the first alien to work on first day of shooting and it wowed everybody. It was further brought to life by Kasia Kowalczyk, a terrific actress and director out of New York.

Even so, it looks really cool. Groundbreaking for a TREK movie extraterrestrial, since until now almost all have been people in makeup and little or no CGI.
