Are you willing to give up TV?

I gave up TV 3+ years ago and don't miss it for a moment. I would catch up on BSG on a 3rd party Tivo, but now that it's no longer on the air I don't watch TV shows at all.

So I guess you could say I am more than willing to give up TV. I've already done it.

Yes, but... not really. Let me explain.

I watch most of my shows using my computer. However, watching tv is more relaxing for me, in the sense that I like being under a soft blanket on my couch watching tv. I may find stuff I see on my computer more interesting but I still like watching tv more.

However, when I was in the USA, I didn't like the tv there much. There were some interesting programs (carefully hidden about the ridiculously large number of reality shows) but there were so many commercial breaks that made it very difficult for me to concentrate on something.

By the definition that we seem to be using here, I've pretty much given up TV, since I record my shows and watch them later. There's one show that I watch on Hulu, but I find it more comfortable watching shows on TV. I do still occasionally watch stuff as it airs on History Channel or TCM, but I mostly watch what I've recorded or stuff on On Demand or DVDs. So I've given up on the schedule, but I don't really think I've given up TV. :rommie:

No way. I hate watching tv on the computer, anyways. And tv is great today. Dexter, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Big Bang Theory, South Park, Weeds, the Office, all good reasons to watch tv.

By the metric of "giving up TV = watching shows online instead of on the actual television set," then yes, I have given up TV almost completely.

Same here, except my viewing has been confined to DVD. I've tried Hulu, but the onscreen logos and commercial interruptions are as annoying as they were when I still watched regular TV.

I do watch broadcast TV for the sports / racing coverages ,PBS/BBC news , History, Nat Geo, and Turner Classic Movies .Now my wife loves an occasional telenovela and her real life shows (not the fake "reality" shows).

I use my DVDs extensively, the DVD collection is now able to last many months without repeating unless I want it to..

TV..I'll give it up when they pry the remote from my cold dead fingers..

TV? That's easy. If you tried to force me to give up the internet, I'd have to kill you.

J.

I don't have a digital box so yeah, I watch dvds and spend most of my time on my laptop.

I gave up TV five years ago when Lost was broadcast over here. I only tune in for the occasional porn and that's it.

Well my new apartment doesn't have cable (roommates don't watch TV and I dont want to force bills on them they wont use), so I've essentialy given it up.

But I watch shows online, hulu, downloads, and via Netflix... so... yeah.

I actually think TV on the whole is much better than its ever been. With the explosion in reality shows there has also been an explosion of serialized tv

I'm actually surprised at how easy it was to give up cable TV. My wallet's also enjoying the additional funds freed up from doing so.

I still have an OTA HD antenna and PC DVR which serves my Monday night viewing needs (House, Lie to Me, Castle, HIMYM, Two and a Half Men, and Big Bang Theory make up about 67% of the shows I record weekly) and occasional desire to have something on in the background just fine.

I dumped TV partway through the 3rd season of Enterprise. I didn't like the direction the show had gone and I watched very little else so it didn't make sense to keep spending money on satellite.

Lost made you give up TV?

Yes, it did. It was half-assed translated, so I needed to watch it from other sources but in English. That's when I joined the TrekBBS, btw. Besides most of the fun comes from online chats and findings, something that goes waaaaay over head over here.

Oh, okay, that makes sense. I thought you hated it so much you gave up TV altogether. :rommie:

I couldn't give up on TV. Some shows I'll watch online or download, while others I'll wait until they are broadcasted on Australian stations. And others on DVD.

yeah but I do hate the state of our TV landscape. Real TV shows (with dumbassery as the lowest common denominator in the contestants - "who farted?" ), chant contests (formatted by Universal Music!!!), soccer, soccer, soccer, docu-dramas with lots of dramatization (sic!), Nicolas Sarkozy every fucking news flash (yeaaaaaaaaaaah, his 21 year old son has just given up the designation to a nepotism position!), and so forth...

I had to give up my 27 inch tv back in March, because I moved and there just wasn't enough space in my tiny bedroom. I wasn't a big tv watcher at the time, and for awhile I'd bittorrent my weekly fix of L&O:CI, NCIS, and The Closer. But after a few weeks I just lost interest. Nowadays the only shows I still bother download are Sarah Jane Adventures, and when its on, Doctor Who.
