Are You Handy? 2

Busy day. I cut the vent exhaust and air intake holes in the wall for the pellet stove and installed the new outlet. We didn't get to start the floor today because the tiling has really taken some time. I've been cutting tile while Elmo has been mudding them into place. Before we start the flooring, however, I had to pull out the old vent grate which, for the last 9 months, has been covered with a rug directly outside the bathroom door and is the most unlevel spot in the house (in fact, it's the area we sistered joists for in the basement last June.) So I laid in some 2x6s which fit perfectly

and then leveled over with the last of the thinset mortar

here's where we were about an hour ago (below) on the platform work. We're up to the mantle-line now and will be able to grout the whole thing (tomorrow) a nice sandy brown color.

I made this from scratch this weekend.

The handle needs a bit more work, but otherwise I think it turned out quite well.

Here's a "before" picture taken after cutting the hide.

We still have a little wiggle room for the couch so when the stove is in place, it won't be so close :)

We are exhausted. Totally exhausted after spending the whole day putting in the floor. To our great good fortune, the slats played out perfectly so there were no need for any lengthwise cuts - even around the platform it worked out beautifully. We had some lucky breaks for novices. The other really good news is how wonderfully things turned out around the grate hole, and to think we're never going to have to gaze upon that old hole ever again :D

So this is where it all began - with rolling out the first stretch of underpad

Remember that horrible hole in the floor???...

Now it's time to kick back and watch LOTR on the big ol HD lol

We did an off the top of our head calculation on how much flooring we'd need a few weeks ago when we saw this stuff on sale -- we bought 8 boxes and ended up using 7 and a half. The two rolls of padding were just enough also. Putting in this floor was about the most successful effort we've had to date. It went just about flawlessly :)

SPOCKED, I wish you were here to fix my house. The storm - the one that did all that damage, knocked out my power for 4 days, etc., happened two months ago, and the damage is still showing on my house. I get the feeling that if you'd been here, you'd have built me a NEW house in that time. ;)

Looks like you decided to put the stove in a different spot. Looks real good. What did you decide about the stove pipe?

just another thought, but the LCD tv next to the stove may be another bad idea...

Floor came out nicely, though!

Scout, we're ahead of you on the tv :) Soon we'll be putting in a mantle over the pellet stove. Eventually over that will be a wall mounted flatscreen thus opening up that whole area in front of the picture window. It's pretty tight in there and that tv has to go, but it's all we have for now.

Tim M, if only Elmo had that awesome whip yesterday imagine how much faster I could have worked

Babaganoosh, I wouldn't say I'm anywhere near that skill level yet, but working and renovating the home has become a joy in my life I never thought possible. It's hard (and my feet and calves are screaming at me this morning) but it's very rewarding.

I'm dying to get the platform grouted, mantle up, and of course the pellet stove in place. That's just going to make the whole thing POP! :D
