Are You Handy? 2

It may sound sappy, but I look at these walls and marvel. I love this room. For the first few months here, it was a cold, dark shell for piles of tools - studs and hanging outlets. And now it's a small retreat, carpeted and clean. An oasis from a hectic world that looks out to a green vista of ash trees covered in ivy, pines and rhododendrons and lylacs, and a lonely dirt road beyond. I'm in a very good place right now...
Sweet! :bolian: But... no honeysuckle?

Yeah, that's our little dude - I snapped this pic with my cell phone while the last rays of the late afternoon sun were poking through the trees (I think he was sort of sunning himself). We always shusssh him out of the basement because he, for some odd reason likes to urinate in a particular corner down there :klingon: Very strange because he's really very well house trained otherwise.

A project from a few years ago. Don't tell the cops. I think it's something like a $5,000 fine if they find out I have stolen construction equipment.

My most recent project from just a few weeks ago. My mom bought these stools for me for my new apartment, but they were too tall for my breakfast bar. So I decided to build a high-top bar table for them. The base and top are wood, the leg is made of PVC. I wrapped the rope around the leg in attempts to have it double as a scratching post for my cat, but she is deathly afraid of the entire table. Oh well.

RoJo, I just took this pic off my deck...

GET OVER HERE NOW AND FURNISH MY LIVING ROOM!!!! :D

While I was living in an off campus apartment with a couple of roommates I woke one night to one of those flashing at the foot of my bed...

Today was one of those days I have to question how handy I am. :( If I was a drinking man I'd be drunk right about now.

The hardest part is taking the light off. The thing is fucking bolted to the rest of the barrel.

However, we sawed through the bolt, took the light fixture apart, and learned how to turn it off and on. There's a hidden button!

I finally found time to get downstairs. This windowbox is much deeper than the others, so I had to attack it another way. I built two separate frames about 8 inches apart -- the outer frame flush to the studs. Inner sleeves of plywood connect them making the whole thing sturdy. This is the window I'm working on (from the earlier picture)

Of course, shims make all the difference and I got the whole thing nice and level (can you see the bubble in the top pic? ) Windows are time consuming obstacles for no0bs like me. They rob you of precious studs you could be using elsewhere. But they are also challenging -- I have one left on the opposite wall. If I ever get to work on a basement with a LEVEL floor, it'll be like a dream job.

The window looks like a TV screen in a display cabinet.

God, I need to go out more.... :D

You know, you guys must be saving a fortune doing all this stuff yourselves. I finally got round to getting a few jobs done round the house that I'd been postponing. Some work on the boiler, transformers changed on some lights, a bit of other electrical stuff (rewiring and so on). Fairly minor, but complicated enough to need someone who knew what they were doing rather than me. All the trades seem to have as high an hourly rate as I do! Still, they do work harder, so I guess it's fair. :D

^I just do the stuff because I think it's fun. If I had the work space, I'd build all my own furniture.

That's how Chippendale started and look how he ended up - from stripping furniture to stripping off. It's a slippery slope, esp. with all that linseed oil around....

you'll always be just a half bubble off true :p

nice work.

what kind of permits and other nonsense did you have to go through?

Well, good thing I don't strip much furniture then.

Although I have often told myself that I would consider stripping as soon as I developed decent abs.

But oh so much fun. Wait. No. Shit.

Are you still drunk?

My dear fellow, are you propositioning me? :wtf: ;)

I'm really not sure of anything anymore. :o

*is in mid-twenties existential brick wall phase*

;)

Now I feel both conflicted AND used. :(

This thread sure took an interesting turn.

Perhaps we should get SPOCKED to put a stripper pole into his new house?
