Are You Handy? 2

DCP_1352.jpg

I built this a couple of years ago, haven't done anything on the same scale since

SPOCKED, I see a fatal flaw with your plan - basement room+16 year old boy+own door to outside= ?

good luck on the work and getting the kids settled

Nice, but what's that big wooden structure behind it? :p Yeah, that's really pretty good work, bro :bolian:

He thoroughly understands my stance on the death penalty

Damn. Just.....DAMN :techman:

thanks, dude. It's really just a series of boxes. It was my first big project and were I doing it now, I'd do a couple of things a bit differently, namely lining the grain up on all pieces.

It does appear that you've thought that through quite well indeed ;)

You have a 16 year old boy and you were the one hauling the rodent crap out. Something is wrong there....

Nice work so far looking forward to the details.

As far as my handiness, I'm really good mechanically, but really bad at fine details and finishing and leave that to the experts.

Yea, I'm pretty handy. Household stuff, major/minor construction, electrical, plumbing, you name it - got it covered. I've just gotten to the point in my life that I don't enjoy it much anymore. If I could afford it, I'd farm the work out. On the flip side, I'm anal as hell and probably wouldn't be satisfied with the work if I didn't do it myself.

Q2

I really don't want to tile it, it's a lot of floor to tile, plus, I don't much like tile floors. Not up on linoleum, but I will if I have to I suppose. I really would love to lay a pergo style floor down with rugs laid out.

But, I'm afraid all the moisture from the cold air condensation would warp the shit out of it, no matter how much I lay down padding and insulation.

I put down laminate (tile look) in the bath/laundry a year and a half ago. No problems at all. Love the look and how tight they fit. But if one does warp, it should auto-correct once it dries or worse case you can disconnect the pieces until you reach and replace the bad one.

I did run a dehumidifier last summer but mainly because I had an unprimed door that expanded. DOH!

I will be using laminate in the 1/2 bathroom down there along with the laundry room.

I'm doing my kitchen right now on a serious budget. I will post up some pics shortly.

FWIW - if anyone else takes on a remodeling task like Spocked, look into using steel rather than wood 2"x4". Steel is straight and true and not prone to shrinking, warping, and you don't have to dig through a pile to find one that's reasonable straight.

When I totally redid the bathroom a few years ago, completely gutted and redone, I put in a nice fiberglass jacuzzi tub, the framing is all steel of course and all the wet walls are wonderboard under the tiles and a lot of silicone sealant.

I find that I need guidance. Please tell me what the book says. How and Why are not as important to me as can we just paint it and move on, please?? :rommie:

I'm fairly mechanically inclined. Apparently (even though he wasn't my biological father, proving some things are nurture over nature) I got that from my dad. Guys seem to dig it when we chicks can do anything on cars.

I think I told this story in the lounge but I'll repeat it here because it's funny. Fairly recently the pcv valve in my husband's car was bad. He got it from the auto parts store and left the car home with me. He said he'd do it when he got home the next day. I said I'd do it. Even after being together for so long, he looked at me and said, "Are you sure? It'll be messy." I said, "Since when have I ever been a prissy, girly girl?" So, I was outside replacing it and I happen to look (I hadn't noticed them out there) and my neighbor and some of his friends were outside standing by his truck....they were all looking at me. They all smiled when I looked at them. I waved, they waved back. Apparently it was interesting watching a little chick work on a car.

I think it's very sexy when a woman can do things on a car... and there is no dirty pun there. For me, there is something very sexxxy about a girl in a pair of overalls that has just done some sort of manual labor on a car, or painting, powertools...

X2. What he said.

Replace "cars" with "computers" and you're right. It's the same thing.

I inherited mine from my dad. If he'd have known when he was going to die, he'd have built his own coffin.

He and mom were shopping for new furniture and dad didn't want to pay for an ottoman so he flipped it over, drew a quick sketch and went to Home Depot. It came back from the upholsterers the week of his funeral. It still sits in the family room in front of his chair.

Good luck to all the projects.

I may try to do bookcases this summer if we can ever find teh money to buy supplies.

Re: basment flooring...maybe the carpet squares? Then if there is a mess, they come up easy and new ones down.

Okay, too much HGTV/DIY
