Are You Handy? 2

Nice looking little house. And deck. And do you have snow?
No snow.. I think you are seeing sand across the street in the upper picture (they are still building on that lot, I think).

J_P, there's no door covering... you're just seeing his fleece blanket on the floor. We're still leaning towards the heat pad which won't radiate (and perhaps overheat) like a lamp would. And the windows we want to put in should allow for some xtra measure of heat from sunshine. The door will probably remain open, though it might have some sort of weather block to prevent snow or heavy rain from entering.

By the way, any new kitchen work lately? :)

I am very impressed with your dedication to your cat's comfort. And all because you don't want a litter box inside the house!

Yes, that is indeed a nice deck you have SPOCKED
The deck will have to come down (it's the entire length of the house) if and when we decide to put up an addition (most likely a 3-season). It's in great shape though. We're weighing the benefits of an addition based on how long we actually intend to live here (probably no more than 5 years). It just may not be the most profitable idea; despite that - at our current ~580 square feet, we REALLY need the space, and the direction we need to build in is where the deck currently is.

If it really is in sound shape it could always be detached from the house and moved out of the way while the addition is built. Then it could be reattached. If the new addition will include a full foundation then the machinery used for that will make the moving a piece of pie, easy as cake.

Just something to consider. :)

I made it through the rain,
even though it was all freezing.
I made it through the streets
even though the trees were falling.
I made it through the darkness
even as the air was chilling.
And found myself shivering
With the others who
Got frozen rained on too
And made it through...

Yeah, so we finally got power after being out since Thurs 8:30pm. When we finally got word not to expect power for a few days I had to scramble for some heat. Of course the pellet stove still requires power and I don't have a backup generator.

So I thought, SPOCKED, you would be interested in a solution. I was late to the stores, mainly because no roads in my area were passable, so I couldn't buy an inverter. Finally my neighbor found his son had a 250 Watt one. So I parked my car near the cellar door and set it up. We weren't sure it would be enough wattage but IT WAS! I was able to get the cellar up to 79° and upstairs about 60°.

Finally Autozone got a shipment of inverters today while a bunch of us waited and because of my knowledge of the ahn-woon I was victorius and able to purchase the 750Watt model. Of course when I got home the power had been restored.

But I'll have it for next time! You might want to as well. :)

Hey Gertch, you must live up where my parents do. They're in Phillipston/Templeton, and they've had a very difficult time with this storm. I'm glad to know you have power, at long last. They're still projecting 2-3 days for my parents and grandmother (who lives in Gardner). My poor 84 year-old grandmother was freezing in her bed, and my dad had to convince her to stay at a friend's daughter's house.

So glad you got it through all right! Thanks for the tip :)

Yeah, I'm over in Leominster.

I'm glad they got her out of there. Our street has been a ghost town as most people went to be with relatives. Having no power can sure be a life changing or confirming experience.

They've had to have police escorts at any stores that are selling backup generators. I saw six cruisers at the Sears at Searstown Mall while I was trying to find an inverter. I haven't heard of any violence thank God.

I hope your family gets fortunate and their power comes back quickly.

I always kinda liked it when the power went off. Good occasion to have a fire and read a book while drinking hot chocolate in front of it.

 So you still call it Searstown, too? I'll never get used to "Whitney Field" or whatever it is they call it now  And SPOCKED and I were just at your Home Depot there a few weeks ago. :techman: I was also born at Leominster hospital, my gram and ancestors immigrated to Fitchburg, Leominster, and Ashburnham from the various Old Countries way back when.

I'm glad that things are slowly resolving themselves there. I think you guys are right on the edge of the other regional grid, right? I know that my grandmother is staying with a friend's daughter in Leominster, and they've got power.

I think this difference in this case is that the power has been off for three solid (cold) days, and in most places in this part of MA and NH it looks like a bomb went off. My mom was telling me that trees are still tilted across roads and laying on power lines (you have to drive *under* the tree!) and every where you look telephone poles and trees have been snapped in half, wires are dangling everywhere, etc.

Times like that we pin a blanket up across the door to the room with the fireplace. Keeps it toasty warm in there, and we use a propane car camping stove to cook with. Electricity is a convenience for most people.

Yeah, it'll aways be Searstown to me.

My kids were born at LH as well. One thing I've liked since moving to Leominster is the various origins of the people you meet.

I just unloaded all my pictures of the damage around the yard but after driving around I had minimal damage. Here's one of my icicle factory. Unfortunately I was out of business as the weather turned warmer.

Thank you. There are still people at work who know they'll be without power for another week. But everyone seems to be in good spirits. Even the co-worker who's wife's car was cut in half by a falling tree in the driveway.

Sorry to have hijacked the thread so much. :o

Nice work on the house for your cat SPOCKED. I'm sure it will keep her warm and dry this winter, especially with a heating pad in it.
