Well what I think part of the problem in the past was, simply burnout. We had a continuous feed of Star Trek from 1986 all the way what? 2005? Nearly 20 years of non stop Star Trek, 4 Series, 5 movies and bazillions of novels, comic books, toys, merchandise, conventions. It was pretty easy to get really into it, eat, breathe, sleep Star Trek. I know when I got really into Trek, around 1998-99 or so. Watching Star Trek every single night - our market used to have "Triple Trek" on the UPN affiliate, so it would start out with TNG, DS9, finish up with Voyager then of course while DS9 and Voyager were on, you had two nights with new Trek... plus the Saturday repeats! So you literally had 6 nights of repeats of 3 shows, plus 2 nights of fresh episodes (sorta) plus one night of repeats of the new stuff.
I remember in 2000 and up until Enterprise ended, I used to be in a few Star Trek fan clubs, Federation Intelligence, was an ally of KAG and Starfleet International chapters, then I started my own group, Alpha Quadrant Alliance, and fandom at that time (circa early 2000s, until about 2005 ish) you had a lot of active and semi-active fan clubs BUT the problem was, most of the people in and running the clubs, were older. I know the KAG group here in Milwaukee, were all fans from when TOS was BRAND NEW and were literally some of the people that originally wrote letters. One even had Leonard Nimoy come to her birthday party when she was younger back in the early 70s when he came in town for a convention or something. So these were people that have been with it since the very start. And even they eventually petered out and folded chapters. Plus there wasn't tons of new membership coming in, and of course, as with ANY group there are backstabbers and people that take things waaay too seriously for something that's supposed to be fun.
I think NOW, finally in 2009, we've gotten back to what made Trek fun... FUN. We could go to the theater, see a very well done movie, see a whole new universe open up for us and know that y'know there's hope yet for this franchise. I think what we're witnessing now is the rebirth of Trek fandom. New people, people that may never have considered getting involved, are coming to the boards, posting, sharing their joy and excitement, people that may have felt embarassed about being into Star Trek are sort of given a bit of a legitimzing feeling. That we're just as geeky, nerdy and goofy as the Star Wars guys, who somehow are considered "cooler".
I know when Fed Intel folded and the guy that used to run it, said to me when he joined the 501st - (the guys who dress up as Stormtroopers) "Hey when I wear my armor, I'm cool. People respect you. When I dress up in my Starfleet uniform, people call you a geek and diss ya. Tell ya Nick, Stormtroopers get the chicks."
Now... who knows. Maybe we'll get the long sought after respect we've been craving.
Although guys... gals... let's try to put our best faces forward hmm? Shave... maybe wear some nicer glasses or go contacts, maybe suck in the guts just a bit? Walk with a bit of confidence. Yes, we may be geeks, we may be nerds, but by God, we'll have some dignity.
Now excuse me while I polish my metal comm badge ...
