Are they still in the Local Group?

The Sombrero Galaxy is "only" 29-30 million Lightyears away, assuming the one we see is 'the' Sombrero Galaxy and not another like it.

Which is a dumb assumption to make since we know they're much further away than that.

They deliberately used a high resolution image of that Galaxy for the backdrop of the episode, no modifications other than to make it look as if Destiny was emerging from the other side of it in regards to Earth.

Yes, the fucking horror of them using a stock image for a galaxy they have already established can't be that one because they are billions of lightyears aways.

One random remark by a man who had a mental breakdown, shown to be a pathological lier, perfectly willing to kill having no idea how anything worked? Yeah, he also said Destiny was less than 1 million years old when it should be at least over 50 million, I'll not be taking any of his estimates too seriously.

Nonsense. They used a stock photo of a galaxy, so it MUST be that galaxy. Even though it's just around the corner and any of the ships available to Earth could reach it in a few months.

It's much better to assume that. Because, dear GOD man, they used some random stock photo of an equally random galaxy for a backdrop. Don't you GET it, man? It HAS to be the Sombrero galaxy! There's no other possible reason for them using it! NONE! AIYEEEEEE!!!!

You have some serious anger issues you may want to sort about before coming back here.

Also, this is Trek BBS, where the members have a fetish for sombreros. So having SGU set in the Sombrero galaxy excites us because we like sobreros.

And besides, it gives us the name Sombreroids, which is an awesome name for the aliens.

Look, they deliberately used a large blatant image of a Galaxy that so far as we know is fairly unique, it was a little silly of them when they could have more quickly made a CGI spiral galaxy like thousands of others out there, its probably not the Sombrero galaxy but it was a bad choice of image. The far galaxy looks to be a typical spiral/spiral bar one so why not have CGI'd some other interesting type in there instead?

See previous posts.

I'm also no idea which oriface you're pulling this goofy "unique" idea from. I don't see anything of the sort mentioned about it on various sites talking about it.

The most unique feature of the sombrero galaxy is its relatively large core. The dusk disk is not.

Lets have a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NGC_5866

This is a very similar looking galaxy, which for some reason is classified as lenticular.

But wikipedia has this to say:
One of the most outstanding features of NGC 5866 is the extended dust disk, which is seen exactly edge-on. This dust disk is highly unusual for a lenticular galaxy.
[...]
It is also possible that the galaxy is a spiral galaxy that was misclassified as a lenticular galaxy because of its edge-on orientation, in which case the dust disk would not be too unusual.[4]

Do you know what an in-joke is? It was a quick, throwaway shot. I seriously doubt the CGI guys meant a damn thing by it, other than for people in the know to recognize it and say, "hey, that's the Sombrero Galaxy!"

People who think it's some kind of major story point are looking a bit too much into it.

^According to that...the Sombrero would not be *ANYWHERE* near as bright as we see it in image-processed time-exposed NASA pics...much dimmer.

I noticed the SFX people did dim in a bit...but no-where near dim enough - of course, space-based movie and TV have usually made planets and nebula and galaxies look brighter than they are in real life, so they look cool - and recognizable - on the screen.
