Are there any good Admirals?

Going simply off what the OP says I think Kirk meets the criteria. He was decent. He saved the earth twice as an Admiral, he sacrificed his ship to protect the secrets of what a Klingons believed was a weapon of mass destruction.

Admiral Alynna Nechayev wasn't corrupt in the slightest, she was simply a horrendous Bitch.

I don't know... We didn't see that much of Nechayev, but she reminds me a lot of Captain Janeway. If Voyager had been Nechayev's command, and we had a chance to see her day in and day out -- and not only when she was crushing Picard's warped sense of morality at any cost -- we would probably have a different opinion of her.

I should note that I'm not saying 'horrendous bitch' in a bad way.

Yeah, I'll grant you that Kirk did all you say he did "as" an Admiral,
but even he knew that he could do more good as a Captain, remember the conversation he had with Picard in Generations?

Admiral Hanson. I see he's had a few mentions already, but in the space of one episode, I actually managed to like the guy enough that I missed him when he was killed.

Nobody could possibly have anticipated what the Borg were going to do in light of the apocryphal nature of what Starfleet knew about them in the 24th century. I suspect the events of "Regeneration" were never connected to the Borg, and it also seems to me the El-Aurians were never very forthcoming about what happened to them, if Guinan's behavior was typical. So what rumors they had heard really wouldn't have provided enough for Hanson to do more than what he did.

Fleet Admiral Shanthi, who let Picard set up the Romulan border blockade seemed decent enough

& Vice Admiral Nakamura seemed pretty acceptable as well, even though he had some connection to Cmdr. Maddox's plans for Data, perhaps not fully understanding what he he was into there

The greatest Admiral in Starfleet, IMHO, was Forrest from ENT. Perhaps he has a descendant in TNG's time who is as awesome as he was.

Just because it wasn't his life's calling to be an Admiral and he chaffed being stuck behind a desk doesn't mean he was a terrible or corrupt Admiral or even a bad one.

Especially considering every other Captain and Admiral was caught with their pants down, completely helpless, or simply out of range during the V'Ger and the Whale Probe incidents.

It just means Kirk made a better Captain than Admiral. Just because you're *really* good at one thing, doesn't necessarily mean you're horrible at something else.

I submit that Kirk was a damn good Admiral. He also happened to be a great Captain.

I do like Admiral Nakamura from "Phantasms" and "All Good Things..."

He kind of reminds me of the trademark guy on the Monopoly games. Not that that's a valid reason to put trust in someone but I do like him for that reason.

Yea, he was not a big enough asshole for that, which is what the main requirement for an admiral is, 90% of the time.

Agreed. I'll add Jellico to the "Not a Bad Admiral" list, though he was involved in certain questionable activities during the "A Time To..." series. I think Nechayev was as well, actually. OTOH, I don't think there were any non-questionable options.

If we're including the novels, I'll add Admiral Leonard James Akaar to the list.

Admiral Morrow from TSFS. True, he opposed Kirk, but it was Kirk who wanted to break rules. Morrow actually tried to be nice about it.
