Are There Any Corporations In The Trek Universe?

It occurred to me that in all the on air Trek I've seen that there hasn't to my knowledge been a corporation mentioned.

I could be mistaken, but it seems all the civilian businessmen seen or mentioned in Trek have been along the lines of individual owners (such as Sisko's restaurant owning father).

Why is that?

I really don't take those tiny details in the background seriously.

Just like I don't take the briefly seen schematics that show the ships mouse running on the wheel in engineering to be the ships power source.

Eelwasser and Slug-O-Cola are both brand-name products made by the Ferengi, presumably by for-profit companies or corporations. D'Kora class ships are also made by a Ferengi company. And one would think Ferengi society would have abundant companies and corporations.

There are several corporations (including Yoyodyne) listed in Mr. Scott's Guide To The Enterprise as involved in starship construction, and I seem to recall it being said that the ship's computer on the NX-01 was made by Apple, but I can't recall a source for that.

Galactic Mining Company was shown in the TOS episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before".

BioResearch Corporation was mentioned in the FASA RPG sourcebooks, as was the Orion company, Crecent and Trefoil Developments.

House Ozhpri and Chateau Picard both seem to be fairly large wineries. Not sure if they would still count as individuals' businesses, but I wouldn't think so.

Trans-Universal Shipping was a company that Chekov worked for in the TOS novel "The Fearful Summons".

Trilateral Broadcasting Company is based on the planet Viden in the 4th issue of the TOS - Year 4 comic series.

Turok and Sokor were rival shipbuilding companies on Qo'noS in the KE novel "A Burning House".

There was a car company that made a car called the "Jupiter 8" on Magna Roma, and presumably the cars the Iotians used were made by a manufacturing company, as well - both in TOS, of course.

The Earth Broadcasting Company was a news company with representatives onboard the Enterprise-B during her maiden voyage.

The Jupiter Mining Corporation, Diet Smith Corporation, and the Diva Droid Corporation had offices on the Promenade of DS9, as did the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation, which was also mentioned in "The Schizoid Man" episode of TNG.

And the National Biscuit Company, or Nabisco, was mentioned in the final episode of TOS as depicted on Saturday Night Live.

True, but I left all of those out of my post because they seem like single ownership establishments, not companies/corporations like the OP was asking about.

Since it looks like you're trying to be a completest , perhaps someone could look in the TNG Tech Manual for the name of the (Japanese?) Corporation that makes the isolinear chips I think. My book got lost in a move a few years ago ( ) but I'm pretty sure it mentions something like that.

While the economy might be very different on Earth in the future, the legal need for a corporation would be just the same then as it is now. They've got copyright and intellectual property laws, physical property laws, trade laws, don't see why the traditional definition of LLC, co-op, etc would change much. If individuals can own their own businesses and property (accepted canon), then certainly some of those businesses would grow large enough and have a large enough staff or produce a good or service that would require the legal status and protection traditionally afforded to an incorporate company.

I find it difficult to see how the Federation can exist within the universe it's depicted in, without there being some horrible conflictions. Say I was a Security Officer on a ship, and I decided on a change of career. If I'm not getting paid by someone then how can I live, not just outside the Federation, but outside of Starfleet, without money. How could I eat at Sisko's Dad's Restaurant without any money to pay for food.
And that FC quote "Money doesn't exist in the 24th Century", throws it all up in the air. I really find the concept of living in a world where there isn't any money hard, because eventually Bob will want something from Joe and Joe will want something from Bob, and neither will have anything similar in cost, so there'd have to be money involved again. Everything you could possibly want literally appears out of thin air. As in, there is a box in the wall that glows and then spits out anything and everything, for free! I think the writers realized too late that introducing replicators in TNG had effectively painted them into a corner because they were as much in over their heads about how to portray an economy with limitless resources as all of us are.

I mean, you can't tell me people in the Federation are putting in their 30+ years of work simply because they enjoy it. Or maybe they just have robots and computers doing all the boring work and the people are either left doing fulfilling things or sitting around entertaining themselves. Maybe lots of people just work when they feel like it and take really long vacations.

I remember reading the JMC listing on a copy of the directory somewhere... I had no idea there was them hidden gem of Diva Droid too

Quark must have mentioned a fair few. Slug-O-Cola springs to mind, plus the shares he has in various places in Business as Usual.

The Daystrom Institute might make the cut as they must own a crap load of 24th century patents.
