Apple should name more things after Apples

^^That's what I thought they'd do too..."Safari" is kind of a dumb sounding name, I think. Not as cool as "Firefox" or "Chrome," but I suppose still more interesting than the truly imaginative (;)) "Internet Explorer" and "Netscape Navigator."

"Netscape Navigator" was a cool sounding name in 1994. So was "Mosaic" before it.

Last I remember Apple sticking with the "apple" scheme thing was "Newton". Like the apple falling the genius' head. Years ahead of it's time too.

Their operating systems are named after big cats, and lord only know where the "i" came from. I feel like the company shouldn't even be called Apple anymore.
Well, before Macintosh there was Lisa (which followed the Apple III). As for operating systems, there was a long while where Apple was on a musical kick for names (Copland, Harmony, Rhapsody, Tempo, Allegro and Sonata... I still use Rhapsody today).

One of the main reasons for Apple moving away from apple themed names was the law suit by The Beatles (first started back in 1978). It was the final settlement (in 2007) of that long battle that let Apple drop Computer from their official name.

... and WorldWideWeb before that.

Most other apple-related words are most likely trademarked and unavailable. Pippin, Golden, Delicious, Crab ...

When I worked at Apple I loved the working names for various builds and boxes. I actually designed the team shirt for Cyclone and Tempest (the 660AV and 840AV).

I also named a few of the theme-based meeting rooms and storage areas in Bandley One and Infinite Loop 1.

For April Fool's Day one year I created (on paper) a very cheap Macintosh SE called the Macintosh Low-End User, the Mac LUser. It had an ashtray molded into the top plastic and a side ring where you could put a can of soda or beer.

Someone above mentioned bringing back the Apple IIe box with current innards and software. I would buy one of those in a heartbeat! The Mac Retro or, (in keeping with the title of this thread,) The Apple Core.

^ You worked for Apple? Cool!
I worked for Dell, but it probably wasn't as great as working for Apple. Wow.

Apple already used Pippin for their game console/interactive media system back in the mid 1990s

While I liked the 840AV, I love my Quadra 950. It is a great system and I've had mine since 1997.

That's the first I've heard of the Pippin system. I guess nobody Took it seriously.

Safari is probably meant to fit in with the "big cat" theme but I prefer iBrowser - Honeycrisp.

It wasn't much of a computer, but was designed for interactive CDs and the internet (Apple's eWorld). Apple stopped making the Pippin about the same time that eWorld was absorbed by AOL.

All that was during the dark days of Apple when the company was hemorrhaging money, made too many different models of Mac (which meant they were usually short of the models that were most popular and stuck with a massive inventory of everything else). At this point they had also let a massive lead in the laptop market slip away from them too as the original PowerBook had revolutionized the configurations of laptops and given them a massive market share as a result. Apple didn't build on that and other PC makers copied the design (keyboard moved towards the screen with the track device in the center front... the rest of the space used as a palm rest).

I don't agree with everything that Jobs and company cut when Apple and NeXT merged, but Apple needed to get back to basics back then (1997-98). To point out to the PowerBook team just how far behind he thought they were, Jobs used an IBM ThinkPad and later a Toshiba Tecra (both running OPENSTEP) after returning to Apple. Even though the Rhapsody team had ported Rhapsody to the PowerBook 3400c (1997), Jobs (to my knowledge) didn't start using a PowerBook until the PowerBook G3 Wallstreet series was developed (late 1998).

... all of which has little to do with Pippin... sorry. :shifty:

That was supposed to be a play on The Beach Boys' song Surfin' Safari and the vernacular web surfing.

I guess it was too clever.

The 950 was an EXCELLENT box! Other pre-iMac and G4 favs include Macintosh IIci and the Quadra 700. (Although the latter could be flaky depending on which system you loaded on it.

And I also love my Apple IIc!
