Was at Best Buy today pricing Bluray players. Saw some in the 200 dollar range, also saw a small one for 80 dollars (it was on sale though, normal price appeared to be 110).

What exactly can the more expensive models do that the cheaper ones cannot?

Just stick with the more better known/more reliable brands like LG, Sony etc...
I saw a Sony-brand player for 99 dollars on Amazon...

Starting with my last paycheck I'm putting five dollars aside in an effort to build up some cash that I can use as spending money. I realize getting enough for a player that way will take a while, but I'm expecting a promotion soon, so I may not have to wait however long it would take to get to ninety dollars by saving five dollars every paycheck

I think the full transfer from DVD to slightly better Blu-Ray will not happen very quickly and in these austere times I don't think so many people are willing to shell out money on electronic stuff.

It's due to the studios' push for that magic <$100 level of Blu-ray Disc players (the same price point that really pushed DVD to mass adoption).

It makes sense, too, from an anti-piracy standpoint ... especially with bandwidth caps being adopted by ISPs, it's a little more difficult to download a 50 GB Blu-ray than it is a 9GB DVD.

I'm about ready to make the jump, myself, though it's more a question of whether we replace our TV (we have a four-year-old off-brand 720p plasma that's getting snow in the upper left-hand corner) or get the Blu-ray Disc player first.

I'm about ready to make the jump, myself, though it's more a question of whether we replace our TV (we have a four-year-old off-brand 720p plasma that's getting snow in the upper left-hand corner) or get the Blu-ray Disc player first.

Play your cards right, you can probably get a deal on both at the same time.

I'm told the best time to buy a new TV is right after the Super Bowl, since lots of people buy new TVs for that and the overstock gets clearanced shortly after.

Make sure you buy at least a 'Profile 1.1' player.

Profile 1.0 will play the movie only.

Profile 1.1 will play the movie and any off-line special features.

Profile 2.0 will play the movie, off-line and on-line special features.

Usually everything is 'Profile 2.0' now, but I'd still pay attention buying a player for the first time.

And I'll agree with those stating the PS3 is a definite top-end player with the fastest disc load times I've seen.

I'm suddenly having flashbacks to 1999 when Paramount released Star Trek: Insurrection on DVD several months before the VHS went on sale (although the VHS rental copies were available at the same time as the DVDs).

That was pretty much the standard back in the early days of DVD. When the movie came to home video, the DVD was immediately available for purchase while the VHS was just for rental until a few months later.

As far as I can remember, VHS movies would appear at rental stores first, and then it would be awhile before you could buy them everywhere for $15-20. Although you could buy them at the same time Blockbuster got them if you were willing to shell out $100. I wonder if it cost rental stores as much to get them stocked.

I try to restrict my blu-ray buying to combo packs, but I do make exceptions if I am updating or if it is a specialty item like the Heisei Gamera films.

I only own six blu-ray films and only three of them are theatrical films (Star Trek, Kick Ass, Inception) and the other three are specialty (Stargate, Stargate Continuum, and Gamera).

Yeah, the term was "priced for rental," which meant roughly 95 bucks (the same price the rental store paid).
