Don't they annoy you when they're used incorrectly?
So I'm leaning towards just using them to indicate a missing letter and not faffing about with the possessive bit.
We can fathom out if it's the boys bike, the boys bikes, and frankly I don't give a damn about the boys bikes wheels or where the apostrophe is.
It's more annoying and confusing when used badly. So 'if in doubt ~ leave it out' that's my new motto.
