Anything on Sela? [Minor Spoilers]

Rush Limborg

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Last I've heard, Commander Sela was knocked flat at the end of Death in Winter. Have any of the other books adressed what happens to her afterwords?

Hey, KRAD, Mack, Chris--is she on the Relaunch agenda by any chance? Talk to me, y'all. I gotta know!

I believe she and her little dog Toto awoke on a strange planet with a dead witch under their shuttlecraft ...

Given the relatively few number of books seen since DIW and that the near future of the post-Nemesis series will be focusing on "Cleaning Up Mack's Mess" I doubt we'll hear from Sela anytime soon.

She's one of the villains I like, but only in small doses. It just seems to suit her better than, say, Dukat or Weyoun, who were far more "in-your-face" villains. Would be interesting to know what she's been up sooner or later, though.

She hasn't figured into any books since DIW. I'm certainly in no hurry to look in on her, as I've never ever liked the character.

^Understandable. For the most part, she was portrayed as a 1-D villian. Y'know, the Villian-You-Love-To-HATE!

Still...I think there is a "tip o' the iceberg" with her....

See, when she and Picard first come face-to-face, she tells him what happened to Tasha--how she died. She goes into a lot of detail, which, frankly, implies that the scene had been playing in her mind, over and over for so long, that she had to let it out.

As she tells the tale, her tone gets more and more intense, and when she says, "My father offered her a life, and a home... and she betrayed him!", she all but shouts it out.

I dunno...but it seems to me that when she says this, she's trying to justify to Picard her actions back then--her betrayel of her mother.

So...when she declares, "Everything that was human in me died that day. All that's left is Romulan--NEVER DOUBT THAT!", Picard, of course, shrugs and says, "Doubts? I'm full of them."

I'm no shrink, but... it looks as if she is consumed with guilt, and she is telling herself that it was her mother's fault. She hides her guilt, in effect, by becoming the mortal enemy of everything her mother stood for...which, by the way, is represented by Picard.

Hence, she tries to gloat with this tale...at first. But when she gets into it, she becomes very emotional.

In "Unification", this insecurity is hinted at. When she grumbles about how difficult her life has become, because of Picard, Data, and Spock, Data says, "Perhaps you should consider another line of work."

She looks pissed off at this, to say it mildly.

When Spock refuses to go along with the plan, she actually explodes. "I hate Vulcans! I hate the logic, I hate the stubborness," etc.

It would be most interesting to see if this insecurity could be explored further... it would go a long way towards promoting her from 1-D status, to put it mildly. Hmm....

(Jots furiosly in notebook....)

My problem isn't her one-dimensionality, it's her complete lack of impressiveness as a villain (her plans in both "Redemption" and "Unification" were incredibly lame, and far too easily neutralized), it's the fact that the character only exists because the producers took pity on Denise Crosby for her terminally poor judgment in quitting the show in the first place, and it's that her presence utterly ruined "Redemption Part 2," in which the entire plot ground to a halt so a commander in the Romulan military could beam over to an enemy vessel in a time of war alone for the sole purpose of providing exposition to the audience about why there's a blond Romulan who looks and sounds like Tasha Yar.

She isn't a character, she's an actor being given a job, and there are dozens of more interesting Romulans to choose from.

Last I heard, she was planning on opening a diner with Martin Madden along the Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

I've got no problem with Tom Riker. Heck, I think it might've been cool if, in "Second Chances," they'd gone ahead with their idea to kill off Will Riker and have Tom take over at ops, with Data becoming first officer.

I was in support of that decision, because then Riker would have had some badly needed character growth (through Tom), and Data would have stepped up and become the show's "True Number One" (as most of the viewers saw him as at that time) rather than serving as just a defacto one to Jean-Luc Picard.

As for Sela, if I never see nor read about her ever again that would be fine with me. It's not as if featuring Sela in any of the Star Trek novels is going to help fund Denise Crosby's bank account or anything...

So,at the risk of derailing this thread...are there any plans afoot for Tom Riker.
If the post-Destiny universe is to be so topsy-turvy,surely there must be a place for an admittedly damaged but highly trained/motivated individual like him.

Late thought...would Tom be a viable Section 31 candidate?

Yeah, Sela was never that great of a character. Having her show up to play any major role in the books wouldn't seem to fit with the direction they are going. I don't see any Romulan Generals or starship captains throwing weight behind her which makes her worthless.

Hmm.... Well, if a writer--me perhaps (points to notebook)--were to "re-vamp" Sela, as it were, using the ideas in my earlier post...would y'all be willing to give her a chance?

I mean, though Nemesis is much maligned, it's paved the way for books that we all REALLY look forward to. In the same way, those "iceberg tips" I talked about could very well pave the way for Sela's promotion to status as quite an interesting villian....

BTW, Peter David seemed to have made an attempt at something like this, in Triangle: Imzadi II. He gives some interesting facts about her past.

And of course, she gets it on with Tom Riker...if ya know what I mean....;)

I think IDW's lead-in comic for the new Star Trek film will find Sela going back in time with Nero. Though their ship will be destroyed in the ensuing climactic battle, Sela will survive and go on in the alternative timeline to spawn many more decedents, who will also look like Denise Crosby, who will show up in all manner of crazy unexpected places.
