Captain
Just looking to get an indication as to whether there's any point running a thread here when the season kicks off next month. I suspect the answer is 'no' but you never know.

I know Nick is an AFL fan, as he supports Collingwood. I'm a league fan. Has been threads for Australian sport. I've done a few for rugby league in the past. Plus Botany Bay supports St Kilda also.

I kinda guessed Nick was a fan.

I tried to run a search but it wouldn't accept a three-character string. Dumb.

What is funny, when he lived in Sydney, was never a sports fan. Now - crazy.

There are a few others around. I'll probably start a rugby league thread later in the month.

Sure, why not?

I don't get to post on here as often as I'd like, but I'll stick my head in through the season.

It should be a Pies/St. Kilda grand final again, but it seems all is not well at either club - the pies look like they'll be giving up one or two stars to the Giants (in their tasteful orange and gray), and who knows what effects this unusual Malthouse coaching exit plan will throw up.

For the Saints, I see them as having still the second best list, and therefore a great chance, particularly if Collingwood have a hangover. Problem is, the Saints pre-season has resembled a pub team end of year piss up, and you'd have to wonder what effect three grand final failures in a row has had on them. A steep drop down the ladder would hurt, but not surprise.

Freo could be thereabouts. Dogs and Cats might slide this year. Hawks will be looking for a new coach unless they pull their fingers out quickly.

Can't say I'm across it at this stage - media coverage here in Sydney is non-existent unless the Swans are flying. In the off-season? Forget it.

Will be watching the NAB Cup tonight on Foxtel. I think it's a fantastic pre-season contest, but who knows how it will go under the new format? Once upon a time, marketers lived by the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", but someone at the AFL is trying to re-invent the wheel.

Who do you guys all support?

Port Adelaide here. So, umm, not a good start. :shifty:

I actually haven't been following AFL for a few years now. The finals last year piqued my interest and so I vowed to get back into it again this year. Primus was Captain of Port Adelaide last time I looked and now he's Coach.

I thought this was going to be about the old American Football League. Aussie football looks cool, just have no clue how it works.

Do you really think the Saints will get back up after losing three grand finals in two years? It would show true character and grit if they could stand up after all that has happened to them this preseason.

(if anyone wants to see Nick Riewoldt's wang I have the photos as does every other Collingwood supporter)

There will be a lot of media this year about uncontracted Collingwood players and the coaching transition. We are not worried. We know our players well and we would be surprised - amazed - if anyone left the club for Sheedy's squillions in the Greater Wastelands of Sydney. Lets say that Thomas or Pendles does go - we have so much depth at the moment that their absence would not be noticed. But it aint happening. Players play for premierships. Well except for mercenaries like Abblett and Judd.

As for the coach - do I need to point out that Paul Roos has successfully handed over the Swans to his mate Longmire without any fuss? Mick Malthouse is an honourable man and Collingwood is his family. He's not going anywhere.

Personally though I do not like the arrangement. I would have Mick stay on as coach. Jock McHale's premiership record is ready to be broken.

How are you enjoying the new look NAB cup?

Can you believe Sydney allowed Gold Coast to get on top of them

Watch out Richmond, a competitor for 9th spot has emerged

Didn't do a lot for me. Hopefully they revert back to the regular format next year.

Playing the GWS council workers under 16's was a horrible mistake. Their introduction to the big stage was a disaster. Talk about giving the pro-NRL Sydney media a free swing. They'll get done 250-20 in the trials, if their opponents even bother to risk any of their top liners against them.

Gold Coast mightn't be the spoon certainties most punters have them locked in as.

Apart from that, I'd say the media in Melb would be more focussed on off field matters, no?

Yes .. that St Kilda girl is worth her weight in gold

To the tabloid newspapers perhaps, but there are no other winners in this story.

Now this Nixon guy is clearly no choirboy, but the whole thing smells to me like a brutally executed stitch up by the newspaper involved.

We shall see.

We need the footy to start, the girl to get some help from someone who has her best interests at heart, and this whole thing to go away.

I agree, the sooner we get the real footy going the better.

I don't know that this 'St Kilda girl' needs help, she seems like a perfectly normal teenager reacting the way anyone would after the way she's been treated. It's time footballers like Gilbert learned that they cant just move about from place to place sowing their oats so to speak without consequence.

(it goes without saying that if it was a Collingwood player that was involved I woudl be singing a different tune)

Bring on the Pies / Saints grand final, I want to see Nicky Llama cry again

I don't think a "perfectly normal" teenager would start a relationship with a pudgy 47-year-old with the explicit and admitted intent of getting back at him; recording secret videos and alerting the media in order to do so.

She is a shameless self-promoter, given far too much attention for what should have been a private issue.

Don't underestimate teenagers. They can be as clever as adults but with no sense of responsibility, consequence or conscience. This chick is angry and wants revenge. Perfectly normal.

You going to the NAB fairy cup game tomorrow?

LOL, I haven't been to a game since 1994. I infinitely prefer the comfort of home.

I knock 15 years off my age to sign up for a kids' membership, since they don't have games included (plus I get a cool birthday card!). ;)

Incidentally, can I highly recommend http://stats.rleague.com/afl/afl_index.html

It has game-by-game stats from 1976-2010, with 74-75 coming soon. I've helped out with a lot; it's a tedious process converting them from microfilm newspapers to HTML, but it's well worth it. :)
