Anyone else on the BBS for years yet have a low rank?

I joined in May of 2001 and made Captain within a year...I've been stuck at that rank ever since. I'm on here pretty much anytime I'm online, I just don't post like I did that first year. I might hit Fleet Captain before the year is out at my current pace, though...

I joined about eight years ago - considering this, Rear Admiral might be regarded as a rather low rank. I've been posting quite frequently at times, but I've also taken some breaks.

I think it's time for another brand new Trek show, so I can post on some Trek related stuff again... :borg: ;)

I'm pretty certain Trek XI was what got me into the Admiralty :techman: All those pictures of Karl Urban add up to a lot of posts... ;)

Relatively speaking, that is.

I've been hear for 8 yrs but only a commodore. I guess I usually don't post that much. Though I do read a lot of the threads, I usually don't have much to contribute (even sometimes when I do post :shifty:).

So, rollcall for all of us relatively-low-ranking relatively-long-timers.

True enough.. I started back in 01 and i'm still just a commodore

You know what's interesting about this thread?

All you guys with low rank? I know who you are and have read many of your posts.

Maybe there is something to this quality over quantity thing.

Cus I can tell you, unless I'm modding a forum, there more than a few high ranking posters around who I rarely read at all. I've read so many of their posts over the last 8 years, I already know what they are gonna say!

As for me, I'm not exactly 'low ranking'...but I don't think I'm overly prolific for someone whose been here over 8 years. I think I have about 30,000 posts...but there are alot of people who have been here less time than me with alot more posts.

I've just never paid that much attention. I just post when I have something to say...or when I need to to moderate. Some days, I don't post at all, but only read.

Turn up almost every day though.

It's because you all didn't lead the away team on whatitsname and save the ambassador!

Not really cool now to argue when others got promoted faster ;)

I've been a member since mid 1999 when I first came here to read up on the final arc of DS9 but that was under a different username. Between then and December 2001 when I rejoined under a new name I didn't post much. I got to Rear Admiral earlier this year 7 years and a few months.

Anyone else on the BBS for years yet have a low rank? Yes, me!

Now all my old buddies are hiding out in the higher lounges...and they won't even answer when I knock on the doors or scratch on the windows. :D

I joined in '05 but lurked around as a guest for years before that. I've been posting a bit more lately, but mostly I don't post anything unless I really have something to say.

Didn't -I just see no point in it- lurk for more than a few minutes before that and found that the lunges were the place to find other n00bs and to 'spam' up my postcount a bit.

Now, I say 'spam', but I actually think there's spam and there's 'spam' - the first is a warnable offence and the latter is the way to get to know other posters; participate in some good natured bantering and some light 'spamming' and you'll get to know some other posters -BEST.THING.EVER is to find some other 'spammers' in Misc. (across lounges) and hit up a conversation about nothing (or anything -if you have to be on subject when you talk with people!) and before you know it you're an admiral of sorts.

A few lounge-wars will help -of course- and tagging along while someone on the fast track also helps a bit.

All that being said; no, postcount isn't everything! -it's just the way to meet a lot of people and have a lot of great interactions with them :)

If you feel that posters generally ignore you on the board at large -just start a thread about it and see how many others feel the same way! -You might end up being friends for life :)

I've noticed the same thing. There are a few posters -- some who have posted in this thread and some who have not -- who have been around for a long time. They don't post a lot, but I know who they are because when they do post, they nearly always have something interesting or insightful to say, and each time, it strikes me as odd somehow that they're "only" commodores or captains or commanders.

They get good mileage, I guess. Keep posting, guys; I'll read it. :techman:

^ Yeah, I've noticed this too.

Like a lot of you in this thread, I lurked for several years before joining, then never posted much for several more years. It's only within the last year and a half that I've really posted much, but even then, it's been in spits and spurts, and I'm only now a Commodore. I couldn't care less about rank, though. The only thing I don't like about it is the rank-based lounges. Purely on principle, I don't like that they create an exclusionism based upon a merit that I don't consider particularly meritorious.

Yeah I remember posting here in year 12 of high school which was in 2001, so at least 9 years (I thought I remembered lurking in year 11 but I don't even know if the board was around in 2000 so it could be my memory playing tricks on me). And yep, only fleet captain! I just rarely have anything more interesting to add to a topic than what people have already said, and I'm always too paranoid that what anything I write could be misinterpreted or something :p But I still love reading all the posts here and I'm very glad that most of you are more active than I am, you provide me with a good chunk of my daily entertainment :D

Did you just call me fat? :(

The board actually existed in some form as early as mid-1999, so it's possible.

Or your memory could just be playing tricks on you. One of those. ;)

Yep. 8 years and just over the Commodore hump. I have been posting a bit more recently however. I am up to a 0.87/day average. I was at around a 0.58 or so as late as a year and a half ago or so. I usually don't say anything unless I have something to add to the topic at hand, making a poor attempt at humor or if someone incurs my ire over in TNZ. Having an 8 year history makes it pretty hard to increase that average with any real speed.

At my rate of posting I figure it will be around another 5 years before my next promotion.

I just had a look at the 'find more posts by stargirl' link by my name, and I found one from May 2000, so for once its not my memory being dodgy- I have definitely been a member for close to 10 years (I lurked for a few months before I started posting). Wow that's a long time... I feel so old  Now that I think about it, I've been a member here during pretty much all the significant events in my life... that's amazing! Aw I love this place :p :D

This thread makes me feel prolific.

I never ceased to be amazed at how quickly some people go from Ensign to Commodore or above, some people seem to manage it months.

Me too. I got here in 2001, and I'm just a Commodore. I think I hold the record for the longest time to Captain - it took me 5+ years to get there.

I just plug along.

I'm another from 2001 (although i swear it was earlier, because i thought i convinced Capt. Vulcan to join)... i read a lot of the threads, start to post a reply, then get bored by my own answer or decide no one's going to care, so i dont post it...

I posted a lot more back in the Enterprise forum when it was still, you know, airing. I still visit almost every day, but I rarely decide to post anymore (except, apparently, in threads about people not posting often).
