Anyone else having a strangely quiet NYE?

Had to cancel our party plans due to my husband being sick (it's just a bad cold, but he totally collapses when even the tiniest bit sick). I made the best of it and picked up some lobster tails at the grocery store ... which I then proceeded to eat all on my own because said husband declined to eat any.

I have now consumed four (tiny) lobster tails, a spinach and strawberry salad, 2.5 glasses of good Prosecco, and a few more strawberries with some dark chocolate and almonds. My kids are behaving themselves and watching Stuart Little on DVD and all is very, very quiet. After I put the kids to bed, I think I'm going to watch a mini-ENT marathon on CBS.com because I'm trying to watch the whole series. Or maybe not. :vulcan:

I suppose if I have to spend NYE pretty much alone, this isn't a bad way to spend it. Anyone else alone or just having a quiet night? Should we make a party of it?

We had plans to spend the night at a friend's house, but our 8 year old is sick too.

So now it's videos and beer at home.

I'm sick with a stomach flu since middle of the week and although i'm feeling better now i don't want to give it to other.

Had planned to go to some friends and celebrate but have cancelled it and spend the evening on my own doing all kinds of stuff that i want. Pretty quiet.

Oh well.. there's always next year.

Cheers!

I would love to go somewhere but there are just too many goddamn people in this world. Every bar and restaurant is packed.

You think that's bad, you should have seen Whole Foods grocery at 5 PM. :wtf: Never again on a holiday.

I usually have a quiet New Years Eve every New Year.

The last time I went out to celebrate NYE was about 20 years ago. Myself and a friend went to a night club at the Casino. We walked out of the casino at about 1.30am and there was a really long line for a taxi and we were in the line for one and a half hours. We ended having more fun in the line than we did in the nightclub.

Yeah.. why is that? Before every holiday, even if it's only one or two days off, people rush into the stores like they'll never reopen again.

A few years ago i forgot something vital so had to shop on the 24th and people were lined up in the stores almost up to the entrance.. it was crazy!

as i was saying in another thread, my new years tradition is watching the Twilight Zone marathon on sci-fi ch.

Back in the olden days when I was a young mother the supermarkets use to close for Good Friday and didn't open again until until Tuesday. Because they were closed for 4 days they used to have to get rid of perishables in the last hour or so of shopping. I remember being able to get bread for 5c a loaf and fruit etc for ridiculous cheap prices as well.

Unless something comes up, I'm alone on New Years Eve. My parents are out of town and my Brother is probably out partying somewhere.

I'll try not to let it bother me though. It's safer not being out in the cold and rain and I'll probably just watch DVDs or something, at least after the Hockey is over for the night. At least it will be quiet.

It really was crazy at the store. Traffic jams in all the aisles and then when I went to check out, there were easily 10-20 people in every single line. I waited for 40 minutes. There was one older lady (a customer) who was in a foul mood and being nasty to everyone. I was thinking, "If you have no patience for your fellow man, AVOID stores on NYE."

Praetor, I wish I got sci-fi/SyFy/whatever they call it now. I love Twilight Zone. Who is that in your avatar, btw?

Since 2001 I've not really cared about New Year's Eve. Once we crossed the millennium I lost the "point" of celebrating New Year's. I mean, "Yay, It's... tomorrow!?!"

Just another month-to-month, day-to-day crossover just so happens tonight we go up one in the year. Yawn. Big deal.

I think it's more of a "Yay, we survived another year and we start over meaning a fresh chance" feeling than anything else. At least that's how I see it. With everything bad going on in the world and the tribulations of the past year, people need a reason to be happy about themselves.

I dunno, I guess Doctor House summed it best when he said (actually in regards to his own birthday) "I guess I should celebrate that the Earth made it around the sun one more time, didn't think it'd make but darn-it if it wasn't the Little Planet that Could..."

I don't see it as any real "new beginning" other than, perhaps, when it comes to various forms of paperwork (like taxes) but there's no reason why changing over from Dec 31, 2010 to Jan 1, 2011 should be any different than the change over from Nov 30, 210 to Dec 1, 2010.

Yeah 2010 was a rough year for me in many ways, many things I'd soon forget but it'd be illogical if thought the last two number of the year had anything to do with that and that those numbers being different would mean anything better (or worse) is going to happen to me.

Tonight just leads into tomorrow. Nothing special about that.

We just finished watching "Salt," and my kids, plus one, are outside having a snowball fight -- with me reminding them every few minutes to keep their voices down, as it is 9:30 PM. We are consuming a lot of junk food (chicken wings, chimichangas, chocolate chip cookies and cocoa), and at five to twelve, we'll turn on the TV to watch the ball drop.

I usually stay in for New Year's Eve as I'm not much of a partier to begin with. I actually did go to a party last year because I thought I should at least put in an effort but I soon regretted it. The party was exactly how I remembered them being - standing around with nowhere to sit while drunken strangers stumble around acting like fools. I decided to decline the invitation this year. I would prefer a quiet night in with friends but unfortunately I don't have any friends who are into that sort of thing, they are all going to parties themselves.

I used to spend the night at my grandparent's house with the rest of my family, having a little get-together with noise makers and hats and great TV, but in the past six years or so I've just stayed at home either by myself, or with my boyfriend since we started dating four years ago. Woah, wait - it's actually been five years together now! We started dating in January of 2006.

Your nights sound really fun though! Lots of good (if not good for you) food and drink and some good TV and movies. Unfortunately I don't even feel up for those things really. I haven't been feeling that great all day and I actually took a nap a couple of hours ago, which I NEVER do. It's made me feel quite groggy and weird. I can't figure out what to have for dinner since I really don't feel like cooking and I don't have any great junk food lying around. And I just feel like I can't get into any movies or shows right now. Ugh, I hate being in this mood.

To everyone who has been having New Years dampen by sickness, hope you feel better soon. Being sick this time of year (Or any time really) sucks a lot.

I toast you, people of TBBS.

Happy (Almost) New Year!
