Anyone else feel like driving is like going to war?

I live in rural England, I would've thought things would be worse in a big city like LA.

PCP is basically where you hire a car for 3 years instead of buying one outright, I find you generally want a new car every 3 years anyway so it seemed the sensible thing to do.

So kind of like a lease here in the states?

Two separate occasions, there was a lane merge, I was 2/3 car length ahead of the car in the other lane, I accelerated a little to safely merge, and the other car accelerated MORE because they just HAD to be in front of me, one time I had to swerve and brake hard to avoid a side swipe.
I think oftentimes it's subconscious, and in my experience drivers who are distracted tend to do it more often. It's kinda like a "lizard brain" reaction, if that makes any sense.

Living in Los Angeles, my experience has been that most drivers here are safe, courteous and law-abiding. Of course, there's always the occasional asshole.

I would not wish L.A. traffic on anyone.

I was there a few years ago (on a baseball trip) and I can honestly say that it was the worst traffic I have ever seen in my life. Even from the safety of our tour bus, I could hardly bear to look - the traffic jams were frightening. I'm sure there are drivers who first put the pedal to the metal in 2013 (when I was there) and are STILL waiting for their cars to move.

It's Boston where drivers have the bad rep, but every time I've been in New York or California it's been SO much worse. And every time I've thought a traffic jam on 90 or 95 has been bad? I'm just thanking GOD I'm not driving over a bridge into San Fransisco.

When I was there two and a half years ago, they didn't even have automatic transponders on toll roads. The entire Northeast has had them nearly two decades!! On the worst backed up places in the country you still have to physically stop the car and put in money!!!

In October of 2012, I was on an interstate in Nebraska. I was behind a whole string of idiots who were playing road rage games. In a brief lull, I pulled out and blasted past every one of them. When I had left the last one far back in my rear view mirror, I glanced down at the speedometer and it was at 107mph.

That was in a 2004 Crown Vic just like this. No dual exhaust, no handling package, just a plain-jane Arizona Beige sedan. :D

Speeding, aggressive driving, bullying, tailgating, and distracted driving, just to name a few, are huge problems.
Same here in Germany. However, there's a sort of counter-movement mostly by older drivers: we drive extra-fair and courteous and occasionally it actually rubs off. =)

I got a new office car, a Suzuki Vitara, 3 months old now. Tried it on the Autobahn the other day: the motor isn't even starting to fight at 115 mph. Didn't dare to go faster as the winter tires are made of a softer material that oughtn't be driven over 90 mph, but I think 125 mph should be no prob with summer tires. Anything beyond that would, however, mean a serious strain on the motor.
I really enjoy living in a country without speed limits. Provided, the traffic allows it - we're propably the country with the most road repair sites and potholes.
Cops here drive the newest BMW, btw. Top speed over 150 mph. Wouldn't like to drive one of those. I know my limits both with alcohol and with hosepowers :D. (Now, if only I got my bosses to see the necessity of me having an office mule for sampling in the mountains! 1 horsepower will always be my favourite)

Give me an open road with little to no traffic and I enjoy driving, It's when you start having to deal with other road users that cause me to dislike driving.

Use your indicators when turning/ changing lanes.

Yes I know the speed limit isn't a target but if you want to drive significantly under the speed limit don't ride so close to the centre line so as to allow vehicles who want to travel closer to the speed a safer opportunity to overtake.

On a Motorway don't hog the middle lane at 50mph when lane 1 is clear.

Don't become a member of the 40mph club where you do 40 no matter the speed limit.

Read the road signs to make sure you are in the correct lane when roads split into different roads. Rather than cut across at the last second.

Cyclist the rules apply to you as well such as red lights.

Of course we all make mistakes from time to time but if you do make a mistake and some one beeps at you flashes their lights, a simple raised hand to say sorry goes a long way.

Most, probably 98% of the people who cut across at the last second know exactly what they're doing.

Ex: I go north from the south side of Chicago 45 miles to go home. For several miles there are reversible express lanes (only one exit halfway through). About a half mile before the actual north terminus, there's an exit on the right that allows express lane users to get on I-90 before it splits from I-94. Then there's the last half mile before the merge back with I-94.

I-90 tends to be a lot heavier traffic-wise, so is usually backed up at this point, yet many idiots a day decide to wait until the very last moment to get from the LH lane (of 2), across to that exit on the RH side.

It's worse on days like today, with the heavy rains there must have been an accident somewhere on I-90 after the split, and so the "express" lanes are backed up for miles because of these twats that think they're getting so far ahead.

Doesn't make it right, it's just a shame this doesn't happen more often.

I never said it was right, and 2% of the time it's someone who honestly doesn't know where they're going (still not right, confused drivers are as dangerous as anyone).

Still, that's one pushy a-hole to try that with a copper.

You're supposed to suck it up, go on down the road, get off, turn around, come back from the other direction, and try again. Clearly some people think they are special.

Agreed, that's what I was taught when I learned to drive. I've missed I turn off I was supposed to take on occasion, all I do is curse myself continue on and turn around when safe to do so or find an alternate route.

If I'm going to be using motorways for going to a place I don't know or know that well I'll have consulted a road atlas(which is kept in the car) to plan my journey plus an alternate route if possible to avoid traffic delays such as accidents. I'll also I'll stick on my sat nav to help.
