Anyone dislike Kirk's hair in the TOS movies?

These pictures are great. I agree with the original poster. I always thought movie Kirk looked nothing like TV show Kirk. How did they pull off the scene in Star Trek IV where he's underwater, yet it still looks like his hair is connected to his head in a natural fashion? That may be the most underappreciated special effect in all of Star Trek.

This has come up before - the story is that Shatner has just had a very expensive new weave and he was so happy with it, he asked for those shots.

That weave was one of his best looks.

There's a video out there of a guy showing how to put on a full head rug that when he's done looks a lot like Shat's current hair.

For me, Shatner's hair in the movies took me out of the illusion. In the movies, he was no longer playing Kirk, he was playing... Shatner.

I think Shatner had a hair transplant about a decade ago, so he finally has real hair now.
Find that video. The rug(s) Shatner wears require a shaved head and double stick tape. It's good for a week or so before the tape starts to come loose.

His rugs are very good, and he probably has several (because they have to be cleaned regularly), and in different lengths. They're full lace, each hair tied on. Not like the old cheap wigs with the hair sewn onto an elastic cap. That's probably what he wore in the early-mid 70s when he was not making the star money.

A little Googling will lead you to several salons that specialize in his current type of hair "replacement."

As always, I could be wrong (but I don't think so).

Shatner's rug for STAR TREK 4 was well-glued down, when he went to $ave the whales, that's for sure. But, when he first submerged into the water, the camera's view of him is blocked, so that we don't see how unnaturally the rug changes, when it takes on water ... the adjustment. Then, when he swims around, it's already waterlogged, and is allowed to behave like real hair, by that point. But, when The Shat breaks the surface, he'll be damned if he'll wipe the hair out of his face and end up displacing it.

From STAR TREK 2 through 5, his hairpiece looked like a helmet of pubic hair. It was never a complimentary look for the aging actor, drawing attention to itself. But in STAR TREK: The Motion Picture, he really lookled the part of a Starfleet Captain. It's almost hard to believe he's pushing 50, he looks like he's ready for adventure! Having, seemingly, recognised this, the studio sprung for the best rug William Shatner has ever sported, in his life. At times, it even threatens to look natural. But the days of wearing the TOS hairpiece were long over, even then ...

Eh, I think the perm makes him look younger.

80s Shatner with the 60s slicked back hair makes him look fuller in the face and older to me.
Yep. The 60s hair looked non-nonsense cool at the time, but in later years that style looked like your dad's haircut - or your grandpa's. That plus Shatner's fuller face made it less than flattering.

The full-on perm was admittedly a bit of an odd choice, but it was thought to be cool in the late 70s (I particularly associate it with cop shows of the time), and I guess Shatner decided to stick with it into the 80s, for whatever reason. His rug in Undiscovered Country looks more natural, and the one in Generations looks even better, sort of his TOS hair but wavier.

^ I'll bet someone finally convinced him to go grey.

And it looks like people are divided on the TOS hair. I like those photoshop jobs and think he looks great.

The piece he had in Trek VI also was very good, probably because it had less of a fake super-opaque look and it introduced some gray at the temples. It kind of was inbetween the perm and the TOS cut the way it has a little bit of a cowlick going on.

The TOS hair makes movie Shat look a lot older, because he's effectively got a 1950s haircut. It looks thin and makes him look like my Grandad. I think they got the hair spot on in TUC, but that was because thematically it was about Kirk accepting his age and impending retirement. He looks dreadful in TFF, as he's still desperately clinging on to the idea that Kirk is young and virile - the egotistical rock climbing opener is a giveaway.

It should have received it's own screen credit. The poor thing was acting it's heart out in the underwater scenes near the end of STIV. :D

I never really noticed or cared.

I'll say this. I judge a hairstyle by how nice I imagine it would feel to run my finger's through it. I think TV Kirk's hair would feel pretty gross, all firm and greasy. Movie Kirk's hair looks soft and voluminous. So by that criteria, I favor Movie Kirk's hair.

Bill is larger than life. He is a star and everything that comes with that. The hair was and is a part of that. I think that's part of the Shatner/Capt Kirk legacy.
