Ohhhh, season 3.
The season where she says "I love you" for the first time.
The season of the dreaded "RIFT".
The season where she could have just as easily said, "I hate you".

The season where Callisto comes back!
And the season where Callisto learns that inappropriate laughter can have DEADLY consequences.

I guess after that debacle in Parthus, he's rethinking his theory on loyalty and leaning towards Xena's!

Darphus: "All I know, is that you ran once in battle. You could run again. Feed him to Graegus."

Salmoneous: "To get a message to Iolaus, you need a carrier pigeon. It's not me, is it?" ( he sniffs himself) "It can't be you. All I smell on you is hyacinth
and cinnamon." (I used to wonder why the fanfics claimed this was what Xena "smelled" like.)
Xena: "Are you a biographer or a bad comedian? Or, have you dreamed up some other get-rich-quick scheme?"
Salmoneous: "How about love-slave? I'm versatile."

I thought they (the prop masters) just forgot it, but in the 2nd ep of the trilogy you actually see her walk away from her fight with Hercules without it. Recall after she threw it at him, he deflected it away with a boulder and it lodged in a tree.

They discuss this at whoosh.org ... and I like the idea that maybe TPTB were trying to make a statement that "by leaving it behind", she was leaving her evil past behind too.

11-08-01. From Aarne Rantala. Xena's chakram is completely absent in this episode. She has just her sword and dagger hanging from her belt, and in the battle at the diamond mine it is a dagger she throws into Darphus' chest - not her chakram. Obviously, one thing she did in between disappearing into the woods in the end of 'Unchained Heart' and reappearing in the beginning of 'Sins of the Past' was fetching her chakram where she left it after the fight with Hercules in 'The Gauntlet'.
(A more probable explanation is that in the original script - where Xena was about to die in the end - chakram was seen, at least partially, as Xena's link to her dark side, and therefore abandoned when she turned good. When the script was changed in order to save her for her own series the writers just forgot to correct this.)

Eventually, but Farscape and Space Above and Beyond have been beckoining me for months, and now Warehouse 13 has been added to the dvd pile.
both are fantastic shows. I am waitng for farscape to come out on Blu Ray.

ACT 2
Our heros are trapped in an airpocket next to the canyon wall. Hercules is supporting the roof of fallen rock with his back. Xena and Iolaus are busy trying to dig themselves free, as poor Salmoneus sits on the ground, rocking fearfully, saying nothing.
Hercules: "Can you go-- any faster?"
Iolaus: "What's the matter? Aren't you enjoying yourself?"
Hercules: "Well-- my back hurts a little bit."

Darphus: "Drink deeply. Drink well. Hercules is dead! Do you hear that? Soon, he'll be too big to stop. And we will join with him to fulfill the mighty Ares' destiny. The god of war will rule the world! To Ares!"
Crowd: "To Ares!"

Herc notices a convenient pole at his feet, and uses his foot to kick it up where he can grab it. He pushes the pole under the massive rock his back was supporting, and then turns to grab Salmoneus' hand.
Hercules: "Come on. We're going."
Salmoneus' eyes don't light up with belief until the demigod grabs him...
Hercules: "Go! Go, Salmoneus! Go! Go!"
...then they both run for the opening just as the wooden pole snaps!

Iolaus: "I'm gonna check the perimeter-- see if everything's all right." (He leaves once again)

Our heros are trapped in an airpocket next to the canyon wall. Hercules is supporting the roof of fallen rock with his back. Xena and Iolaus are busy trying to dig themselves free, as poor Salmoneus sits on the ground, rocking fearfully, saying nothing.
Hercules: "Can you go-- any faster?"
Iolaus: "What's the matter? Aren't you enjoying yourself?"
Hercules: "Well-- my back hurts a little bit."

Darphus: "Drink deeply. Drink well. Hercules is dead! Do you hear that? Soon, he'll be too big to stop. And we will join with him to fulfill the mighty Ares' destiny. The god of war will rule the world! To Ares!"
Crowd: "To Ares!"

Herc notices a convenient pole at his feet, and uses his foot to kick it up where he can grab it. He pushes the pole under the massive rock his back was supporting, and then turns to grab Salmoneus' hand.
Hercules: "Come on. We're going."
Salmoneus' eyes don't light up with belief until the demigod grabs him...
Hercules: "Go! Go, Salmoneus! Go! Go!"
...then they both run for the opening just as the wooden pole snaps!

Iolaus and Xena watch outside for signs of their companions. At first all they see is dust and dirt issuing from the artifical cave's opening, but then we see Salmoneus and Herc exit. Herc is still trying to calm the frightened man.

Iolaus: "Sure."
Xena: "That was the most courageous thing I have ever seen."

Iolaus: "Maybe I ought to pound some sense into that thick skull of yours!"

Hercules: "If Darphus' name doesn't scare you, maybe Ares' will."
Miner: "Ares? There's not one man in this camp that hasn't paid tribute to him by fighting in a war somewhere along the line. He bears us no ill will."
From nowhere an arrow comes flying directly at the Diamond mine's representative, but the demigod sidesteps and catches it easily...

[Fight occurs in all quarters, with Xena, Hercules and Iolaus taking up different corners of the small camp. A mercenary pulls out a knife and is about to impail Iolaus with it until a bullwhip cracks and wraps around the soldier's forearm, staying the fatal blow.]

Do you remember that road to Illysia where Salmoneus and the blind driver were captured? Evidently that's where Hercules and Ioalus have "unwittingly" found themselves as they argue the best way to attack Darphus' compound.
How do I know its the same road? Because the blind driver's wagon is STILL sitting on the road!
Hercules: "It'd be better if we attacked from the front."
Iolaus: "No, if we attack from the fron--"
Suddenly, a warrior from Darphus' camp steps around the wagon to challenge the heroes.
Warrior: "Stop right there!"
Hercules: "Uh-oh."
Warrior: (Sarcastic scumbag!) "The mighty Hercules. How does it feel to be fi--" (He collapses from a blow to the back of his skull.)
Xena: "How does it feel to be unconscious?"
Another warrior is sneaking up behind Xena as she stands at the back right corner of the wagon.
Iolaus: "Look out!"
Iolaus whips out his dagger and sends it flying BETWEEN Xena's head and the corner of the wagon, impaling the unfortunate warrior's chest.
Hercules: "Show off."

Xena: (Leans in to give him a final kiss before running off) "Make sure of that." (hmmmm, I don't ever remember her doing that to Gabrielle when THEY were fighting!)

Darphus: "Time's up. Maybe your screams will convince Hercules and Xena to come out of hiding."

Darphus: "Take him to the temple!"

Salmoneus is dragged down the stairs into the temple's basement. Don't ask me why the temple has a basement big enough to house Graegus, "ours is not to wonder why... our is but to do AND die"...??? WHO'S bright idea was THAT!!!!

Do you remember that road to Illysia where Salmoneus and the blind driver were captured? Evidently that's where Hercules and Ioalus have "unwittingly" found themselves as they argue the best way to attack Darphus' compound.
How do I know its the same road? Because the blind driver's wagon is STILL sitting on the road!
Hercules: "It'd be better if we attacked from the front."
Iolaus: "No, if we attack from the fron--"
Suddenly, a warrior from Darphus' camp steps around the wagon to challenge the heroes.
Warrior: "Stop right there!"
Hercules: "Uh-oh."
Warrior: (Sarcastic scumbag!) "The mighty Hercules. How does it feel to be fi--" (He collapses from a blow to the back of his skull.)
Xena: "How does it feel to be unconscious?"
Another warrior is sneaking up behind Xena as she stands at the back right corner of the wagon.
Iolaus: "Look out!"
Iolaus whips out his dagger and sends it flying BETWEEN Xena's head and the corner of the wagon, impaling the unfortunate warrior's chest.
Hercules: "Show off."

Xena: "Any closer, and my ear would've been stuck to his chest."
Iolaus: (Shrugs) "Well, you didn't give me a very good angle."

Hercules: "Come on-- we need to move fast. Iolaus-- you know what to
do."
Iolaus: "Yeah-- one burning wagon coming up."

Alas, its not to be and Salmoneus is dragged from the table and towards the "temple" where Graegus is currently kenneled.

Xena and Hercules sneak into Darphus' camp while waiting for Iolaus's burning diversion.
Hercules: "Ready?"
Xena: "This is no time to say I'm not."
Hercules: "Then I'll see you when it's over."
Xena: (Leans in to give him a final kiss before running off) "Make sure of that." (hmmmm, I don't ever remember her doing that to Gabrielle when THEY were fighting!)

Darphus: "Time's up. Maybe your screams will convince Hercules and Xena to come out of hiding."
Salmoneus: "Wouldn't you like a new theme song? [Sings] 'Darphus, he's your man...'" (Give it up, Sal. You aren't a song stylist!)
Darphus: "Take him to the temple!"

Darphus: "Graegus is hungry."
Salmoneus: "There's plenty of roast left! Let me get him some!"
Darphus: "After he's finished with you, he'll be big enough to obliterate anyone who stands in Ares' path! He smells your fear. Take him inside."
Salmoneus: "That's not fear! It's gas!"

Salmoneus is dragged down the stairs into the temple's basement. Don't ask me why the temple has a basement big enough to house Graegus, "ours is not to wonder why... our is but to do AND die"...??? WHO'S bright idea was THAT!!!!

Meanwhile, back at the hijacked peddler's wagon, a very frustrated Iolaus is about to take matters into his own hands.

But before we consider moving onto the 2 part finale of Xena: Warrior Princess AKA "A Friend in Need", I wanted to revisit something from the teaser of the very first episode of the series.
You can find the teaser here... and if you turn the sound down most of the way you won't be distracted by the sound of the ep being dubbed into another language ON TOP OF the english in the vid.
The clip I want to especially point out ends at 2:30... when she buries her armor/weapons.
When I saw it the first time, I thought she was hiding things to blend in with the locals before attacking/rescuing them from the warlord.
Hah!
I didn't realize at the time that she was giving up... She was burying her past AND her present as a warrior because she couldn't take it anymore. Its been, how long? since she'd traveled/been redeemed by Hercules and the strain was too much. That last kid her army orphaned was the last straw on the camel's back.
"Stick a fork in her, boys, she's done."
She was "done" until, that is, she saw this young slip of a girl stand up to the warlord's minions.
That burial scene, as all of us who've seen the finale know, will be echoed in AFIN.
The SCENE will be, but NOT the sentiment.

Now an apology.
I'm leaving tomorrow for a week and doubt I will be able to get online to adequately begin "A Friend in Need".
Which means you have a week to reaquaint yourselves with it the "usual" way, via dvd, netflix, huluplus etc., or reread the transcript .
I will be doing the "director's cut" of AFIN when I return, and am presently reinserting the additional lines into the original broadcast version's script.
