Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Episode 12 season 1 #12: “The Gauntlet”

Act 2 continues:

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_878.jpg

Darphus is in his tent, mapping his army's next move when he's joined by a very unhappy woman....

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_157ati.htm

Xena: “You defied me.”

Darphus: “You wanted the village destroyed; we destroyed it.”

Xena: “I didn’t order you to burn it, or to slaughter every living thing.”

Darphus: “I gave you my reasons.”

Xena: “I’m relieving you of your command!”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_889.jpg

Darphus: “My men won’t allow that-- yes-- my men. You’re the one who’s stepping down. And you’ll leave the only way a warrior can.”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_161ati.htm

Xena: “The gauntlet? There’s not a man here who’ll raise a hand against me.”

Darphus: “Take off her armor.”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_164ati.htm

[Darphus laughs as two men step forward to do just that, until she's down to her leather under-bodice.]

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_170ati.htm

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_918.jpg

Xena: (To Cretus) “I’ll bury you and your new leader.”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_164ati.htm

Salmoneus: “Can she really make it through that?”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_994.jpg

Warrior1: “No one ever has.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_942.jpg

Darphus: “Begin!”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_946.jpg

Xena walks the gauntlet as the drummer marks time.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_969.jpg

She walks slowly, making eye contact with each man as she passes.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_181ati.htm

That steely gaze, that haughty aire must be working, as she makes it by the first three pairs without a single hand being raised against her.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_948.jpg

Of course... all "good things" must eventually come to an end. An arm with a club reaches out and strikes her.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1009.jpg

Then another, and another. At first she seems to just take it, blow after blow, until finally something SNAPS and she starts fighting back. She rips a club from one hand and pummels the men nearest her with it.

Salmoneus: “Go, Xena, go!”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_193ati.htm

But it doesn't last. Soon the gauntlet gets the upper hand and she's beaten again ...

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1086.jpg

and again...

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1100.jpg

much to the pleasure of some...

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_191ati.htm

and the horror of others.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_198ati.htm

She FOUGHT to the end of the line, ultimately crawling past that line drawn in the dirt by Darphus' sword before she finally collapses. If this was football, it would have been a touchdown... but this is life and death.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1113.jpg

Warriors: “She’s dead.”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_195ati.htm

Everyone turns and begins to walk away.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_995.jpg

Almost everyone. Someone has stayed to watch as the woman who would be Queen stood up, OVER that line drawn in the "sand".

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1146.jpg

Warriors: “Xena.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1154.jpg

Warriors: “She survived.”

Darphus: “Kill her!”

Warrior2: “But she made it through.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1156.jpg

Darphus: “Good for her! Now, finish it!”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1185.jpg

Warrior3: “She fought by the rules.”

Warrior4: “Right.”

Warrior3: “I won’t cross that line."

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1171.jpg

Warrior4: “Me neither.”

Darphus: “Enjoy your exile.”

Xena: [She spits at Darphus, to show himwhat SHE thinks of HIS exile.]

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Episode 12 season 1 #12: “The Gauntlet”

Act 2 continues:

Iloran (Am I the only one who thinks this guy's name sounds like a planet in "Star Wars"?) and Hercules are running through the woods, hot on Xena's trail.

Iloran: “Hercules? How about a break?”

Hercules: “We’ll rest when we find ‘em.”

Iloran:We (meaning "I") won’t be in any shape to fight if we don’t stop soon.”

Hercules: “When we find ‘em.”

[Suddenly Iloran's hit by arrow, directly above his right collar bone. He falls to the ground and Hercules is there immediately. Siome guys will do ANYTHING for a rest break!]

Hercules: “Come on. You’ll be all right." (Is that the healer talking or the guilty cousin?) "You stay here." (Well, DUHHHHHHH!!!!!)

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1219.jpg

Hercules runs through the woods, hot on the trail of Iloran's would be assassin. The man stops to grab a spear, and then cuts a vine just as Hercules stops at the bottom of a slight hill to ask a question.

Hercules: Who are you?! Who are you?!

Unfortunately for Her, he's not looking behind him to see the very large battering ram/ree that has been unleashed and is currently flying towards him.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1246.jpg

BOOM!

and down goes the demigod. Just about then, his attacker begins his downhill charge, screaming as he runs, ready to spear the helpless man/monster (depends on your POV).

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1266.jpg

Lucky for us, Herc comes to just in time to flip himself over onto his back and plant his feet on his attacker's chest sending him sailing over head. In the process, he also managed to disarm the man and using the man's own weapon, puts him at Herc's mercy.

Hercules: Why are you attacking us?!”

Act 2 ends:

****

ACT 3 begins

Spiros: “Go on, kill me. I have nothing to live for, anymore.”

Hercules: “Who are you?”

Spiros: “Spiros. You killed my wife and son.”

Hercules: “I’m Hercules-- and I didn’t kill anyone.” (He lets the man up)

Spiros: “Hercules? But I saw you looting the bodies in the village.”

Hercules: “We were burying them. They were already dead when we got there.”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_209ati.htm

Spiros: My wife and child were in that village.”

Hercules: “You have my sympathy. Come on. Let’s see how much damage you’ve done to my cousin.”

****

Hercules: “You’ll live.” (He's no Marcus Welby, but at least his bedside manner is better than Dr House!)

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_210ati.htm

Iloran: (Just a HINT of sarcasm.) “Thanks.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1308.jpg

Spiros: (Did he ever say "sorry" to Iloran?) “I should never have left. I should never have left.”

Hercules: “Why did you?” (Good question)

Spiros: “No one wanted to leave their families. But we knew someone had to go for help, so we-- drew straws. I drew the short one.”

Hercules: “You shouldn’t feel guilty. You did what you could.”

Spiros: “But everyone I loved-- they’re gone now-- dead.”

Hercules: “I once lost my family, too.”

Spiros: “Then you’ll know there’s nothing you can say that’ll make me feel better.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1314.jpg

Hercules: “Yeah. We will find Xena and her army. I promise you.”

Spiros: “I can be your scout. I know this countryside well.”

Hercules: “Done.” (and they shake on it.)

****

Suddenly we see a familiar sight, running through the woods. Well, familiar is too strong a word, since he's no longer wearing his dress.

Salmoneus: “All right. All right. You’re safe. You found some armor." (He has, its like a leather vest, now all he needs is some leiderhosen and he'd look like Heidi's grandfather) "You don’t know where you’re going, but you’re making really good
time. Let’s hear it for me! Hip- hip-- hooray!”

SNAP!

He's stepped into a rope snare and is pulled upside down into a tree.

****

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1328.jpg

Meanwhile, back at Xena's "secret" cave, we see a bruised and bloodied Warrior Princess mince carefully into the cave, waving off the shepardess that Salmoneus hired to care for the baby.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1338.jpg

Xena: “I can take care of myself!”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1335.jpg

Unlike Salmoneus (and for that matter, Gabrielle), the Shepardess can take a hint and backs off quickly.

Shepardess: “One of your men came here, looking for you, today.”

Xena: “I have no men.”

Shepardess: “He was a scout named Daros.”

THAT perked up her ears... a man not involved in that bloody gauntlet.

Xena: “What did he want?”

Shepardess: “He said he needed to warn you, that Hercules was on your trail.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1349.jpg

Xena: “Hercules?” (You can see the wheels turning in her little warlord mind)

****

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1357.jpg

Hercules, Iloran and Spiros are once again running through the fields and woods when they hear a plaintive wail.

Salmoneus: “Please, somebody help me, if you can hear me! Help me! Please, somebody help me!”

Soon they see the source of the noise... a chunky gray haired/graybearded man haning by his ankles from a tree. Its obvious from his pale thighs that he doesn't get much sun.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1358.jpg

Hercules: “Salmoneus?”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_223ati.htm

Salmoneus: “Hercules?!”

Hercules: (To his comrades) “It’s nothing, just-- someone hanging upside-down. Come on.”

And the demigod makes as if he's leaving...

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_226ti.htm

Salmoneus: “Hey! You can’t leave me like this!”

Hercules: “I know. I know.” (And like a good friend, he cuts Salmoneus down.)

Spiros: “You know him?”

Hercules: “Unfortunately.”

(Standing proudly next to the big man, Salmoneus begins to wax poetic)

Salmoneus: “Does he know me?! I fought a Cyclops with this guy! And a lunatic Centaur. And what about the fifty randy (horny) daughters of King Thespius, huh?”

Hercules: “Can we reminisce some other time?”

Salmoneus: “I had to help the big guy out.”

Hercules: “Yeah. I-- should know better than to ask, but, how did you get up there?”

Salmoneus: “I have no idea. I was escaping this band of murderous thugs-- led by this fierce, beautiful woman with great...”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1400.jpg

Hercules:You were with Xena?”

Salmoneus: “You know her?”

Hercules: “Yes, I do.”

Salmoneus: “They humiliated me. They starved me. They took my entire line of kitchenware.”

Hercules: “Salmoneus.”

Salmoneus: “I’ve got this great utensil. It cracks a walnut into two smooth halves.”

Hercules: “Salmoneus.”

Salmoneus: “Protects the nut, and there are no splinters.”

Hercules: “Salmoneus!”

Salmoneus: “Yes.”

Hercules: “Just tell me where they are.”

Salmoneus: “They’re on their way to Parthus. And if anything like the last time, there won’t be any Parthus left!”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_228ati.htm

Hercules: “Let’s go.”

Salmoneus:Ah-- what about my cookware?!”

Act 3 continues

salmoneus was a okay character just did'nt really do anything with him. I did like the actor when he stared on KULL.

Writer/producer Steven Sears liked the Salmoneus character, though he noted he was quite different from the Joxer character when it came to "how" he was used/written into the show.

http://whoosh.org/issue22/isears1a.html

The rest of the interview (previous and following pages) is pretty good, too.

Then again, I LIKED "The Price"!

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Episode 12 season 1 #12: “The Gauntlet”

Act 3 continues:

Meanwhile, back at Xena's old camp, Darphus and Cretus have just had a visit from Xena's scout, Daros with some news.

Darphus: “So-- the great Hercules is on our trail.”

Cretus:Maybe it’s time to change our plans.”

Darphus: “No.”

Cretus: “But Hercules--”

Darphus: “-- can be defeated like any other man! He doesn’t know we know he’s on our track. That gives us an edge. Here-- outside Parthus, where the road splits-- that’s where we spring our trap.”

Cretus: “But suppose he’s waiting--” (Yep...you backed the WRONG horse, you cretin!)

Darphus: “We’ll crush him like a bug!”

****

Salmoneus is running to keep up with Hercules and Iloran on the trail to Parthus.

Salmoneus: “Can we take a break? I’m hungry. I don’t know how I get myself in these messes.”

Hercules: (Ever practical!) “You might try staying away from killers like Xena.”

Salmoneus: “I wasn’t with her by choice! And I’ll tell you something-- she’s not as evil as you think she is.”

Hercules: “Of course not-- she only kills people for sport.”

Salmoneus: “Well, at least she allows them to surrender before massacring ‘em.”

Hercules: “She’s all heart.”

Salmoneus: “She’s got some heart. She’s not into that-- scorched-Earth policy like Darphus.”

Hercules: “You’re serious-- that she’s not a cold-hearted evil bitch.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1400.jpg

Salmoneus: “Believe me. Compared with Darphus, she looks like the goddess of love and light.”

Hercules: “Who is Darphus?”

Iloran: “Hercules!”

Iloran points ahead where Xena has captured their scout, Spiros.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1424.jpg

Xena: “Hah!”

Hercules: (To Salmoneus) “Looks like we’ll get the chance to see which one of us is right. Hello, Xena.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1433.jpg

Xena: “Hello, Hercules. Looks like you’re losing your touch! Your scout would never make it in my army!”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1432.jpg

Hercules: “You’re right. He’s not a baby-killer.”

(ohhhh, look at her face. THAT's hitting below the belt!)

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1435.jpg

Xena: “Don’t tell me you’re gonna spoil it by bringing your friends into it.”

(She knocks out Spiros with a vicious elbow to the head, then turns once more to face off agaisnt Hercules.)

Hercules: “No, Xena. I think I can handle this one on my own.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1439.jpg

****

ACT 4

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1455.jpg

The two warriors face off across a rocky field.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1478.jpg

Hercules: “We’ve been down this road before. The last time, you almost cost me a friendship.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1484.jpg

Xena: “This time-- it’ll cost you a life!”

From the sidelines comes the voice of reason.

Salmoneus: “Xena, why are you doing this?!”

Xena: “If I can bring back the head of Hercules, I can get back my army!”

Hercules: “So you can murder more women and children?”

Xena: “That was not my idea! I never murdered women and children!”

(well... techincally that's not true, but the writers didn't know that yet. ;) )

Salmoneus: “You shouldn’t be fighting each other! Darphus is the enemy! You should be on the same side fighting him! On second thought, maybe you should work it out between you!”

And OUT comes that crazy chakram, and she throws it at the demigod. He's no fool, and tries to evade it.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1501.jpg

Failing that he summersaults over a small boulder then lifts it to deflect the chakram back at her.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1513.jpg

Lucky for Salmoneus & Iloran, it misses them twice. Unlucky for Xena, it lodges itself into a tree.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1521.jpg

And THAT's when the REAL fight begins! She charges Herc and its rock em sockem warriors as she rakes her bracers across his face and punches him. He flips her away, and she bounces back like a rubber ball, hitting him again and again, eventually landing feet first on his chest and down he goes, hitting his head on another small boulder.

He's dazed.

If he weren't a demigod, he'd probably be dead by now.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_253ati.htm

Xena: “I’ve got you now, Hercules!”

Herc's cousin charges after Xena as she's about to take the upperhand... his sword at the ready

Iloran: “Xenaaaaaaa!”

Instead of helping, Iloran is immediately disarmed, his sword flying HIGH into the sky as the boy is knocked out by the female warrior.

She then turns to Hercules and swings her sword down in a death dealing blow... only to have the DEMIGOD stop the descending blow by trapping the steel between his bare hands. As he scrambles to his feet, Iloran's sword has finally dropped from the sky and is easily caught by the big man.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_260ati.htm

Salmoneus goes to rescue a dazed Iloran, and pull him from the field of Battle.

Salmoneus: “Come on. Come on. Let’s go.”

Soon its clanging blade angainst clanging blade, until finally Hercules grabs her and flips HER over his shoulder, to land turtle at his feet...

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1619.jpg

his blade at her neck.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1639.jpg

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1628.jpg

Xena: “Go on, finish it. Prove you’re the greatest warrior.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1634.jpg

Hercules: “Killing isn’t the only way of proving you’re a warrior, Xena. And I think you know that.”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_273ati.htm

Xena: “What do you intend to do?”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1636.jpg

He lets her up... and offers her a way out.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_275ati.htm

Hercules: “We’re going after your army. Why don’t you join us?”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1648.jpg

Xena: “No.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1650.jpg

She turns to leave, upset for reasons known only to her.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1669.jpg

A grieving Father is not done with her yet!

Spiros:Coward! You can make war on a defenseless village, kill women and children, but you can’t fight a worthy opponent.”

Actually, Spiros, she can AND did. She just lost.

Hercules: “Let her go! She has a fight of her own to deal with.”

Oh god, truer words were never spoken.

A fight that would last for the next 32 years (counting the jump.)

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Episode 12 season 1 #12: “The Gauntlet”

Act 4 continues:

Our intrepid band of crusaders are searching for signs of Darphus' army.

Hercules: “Over here!”

Spiros: “More tracks.”

He moves the leaves aside to reveal the hoof prints.

Hercules: “They tried to cover them up to this point. Looks like a larger body of troops went that way. Let’s go.”

****

They've found Darphus' camp, but is everything as it "seems"?

Iloran: (Derison sets in) “Let’s wipe ‘em out. Come on, we can handle them.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1690.jpg

Herc notices more men hiding in the trees surrounding the camp, than actually IN the camp.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1679.jpg

Hercules: “No. That’s what they expect us to do. That’s their surprise.” (Pointing to the hidden army)

Iloran: “An ambush? For us?” (well, YEAH!)

Spiros: “So, what do we do?”

Hercules: “We even the odds. And we get to Parthus before they do.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1697.jpg

Herc hops up, quickly followed by Iloran and Spiros.

Salmoneus: “Even the odds?”

****

[Hercules et al waylays ambush, knocking guards heads together, strong arming others,

Iloran: “This way, goat-breath!” (Now THAT's an insult I never considered!)

Salmoneus lets the horses run free as Herc backs him up, and Iloran himself is saved from a flanking manuever by Spiros. It was the least the villager could do, since he never did apologize for putting that arrow into the younger man! Then, as quietly as they came, the 4 disappeared after dispatching the ambushers.]

****

An angry wannabe warlord enters the camp to take his 2nd in command to task!

Darphus:We’ve been ambushed, and our horses are gone.”

Cretus: “But how? Hercules was never here!”

Darphus: “He was here, all right! Fools! He’s long gone now.”

Cretus: “But where?”

Darphus: “Parthus.” (See, he's not as dumb as he looks!)

****

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1753.jpg

Its nightime in Parthus, Iloran's home village and Darphus' next target. Herc and Salmoneus are talking in the main square.

Hercules: “Women and children all evacuated.”

Salmoneus: “And the old men and the boys. I still say we should’ve kept some.”

Hercules: “No, they’re no match for that army out there.”

Salmoneus: “Yeah, and we are? All four of us?”

Hercules: “Well, the villagers cooked up some surprises. That’ll help.”

Salmoneus: “Yeah? Well, what happens when the surprises run out?”

Hercules: “Looks like we’ll find out soon enough. You better get to your post.”

****

Darphus: “Ready! Attack!”

His army obeys, and makes a running charge down the hill at Parthus.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1764.jpg

[Hercules fights Darphus and his army. After successfully fending off 4 soldiers at a time, he's suddenly swarmed by a mob and is sinking under the mass of men when we hear a WARCRY and watch an armored woman swing Tarzan style into the crowd, kicking men away as she flies. Enough men, in fact, that the Demigoid underneath the pile can now stand up and throw the rest off without a care.]

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1773.jpg

Salmoneus: “I don’t believe it; she’s come back.”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_305ati.htm

Spiros is fighting Cretus the cretin who's second in command under Darphus. The cretin who killed a woman and FAILED to kill the babe at her side in the last village.

Spiros: “That bracelet belonged to my wife!”

Needless to say. Spiros KILLS the cretin once and for all! The "army" senses the tide is shifting...

Warrior: “Retreat!”

Many turn tail to run down the village streets, just as Darphus is entering the fray.

Darphus: “Fight!”

Warrior: “Let’s get out of here!”

Darphus: “Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!”

When his own soldiers won't listen, he stabs the straggler to death in the street. Think he might be reconsidering Xena's point about WEAK soldiers vs LOYAL soldiers? If he does, he doesn't do it for long because XENA has found him!

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1941.jpg

Xena fights, a sword in each hand...

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_308ati.htm

and kills Darphus with a deadly blow through his chest.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1988.jpg

And without Darphus OR Cretus to command them, the remaining men scatter like rats leaving the sinking ship.

Warrior: “Let’s get out of here!”

****

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1992.jpg

Hercules: “I’m glad you came back.”

Xena: “I had to. They weren’t true warriors. They had to be stopped.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_1993.jpg

Hercules: “Is it over now? All of it?”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_320ati.htm

Xena: “Yes, it is.”

Their little tete e tete is interrupted by Salmoneus and Spiros' arrival.

Salmoneus: “Well, I’m not making any promises.” (Where did he find a chicken leg to gnaw on?)

Hercules: “What is it?”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_323ati.htm

Spiros: “Salmoneus told me that Xena saved a baby boy at my village.”

Hercules: “Is that true?”

Xena: She nods her head, but says nothing.

Spiros: “Was he, uh-- Did he have a birthmark on his left leg?

Xena: [Nods head again.]

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_2044.jpg

Spiros: “That’s my son. That’s my son. Oh, gods above, thank you. I don’t know how to--”

Xena: “Suppose I don’t wanna give him up.”

Spiros: “What do you mean?”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_2034.jpg

Xena: “I put my life on the line for him. Would you?”

Spiros: “Yes, and I’ll fight you if I have to.”

Xena: “You’d lose.”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_325ati.htm

Spiros: “Doesn’t matter. He’s my blood.” (He starts to draw his sword)

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_2055.jpg

Hercules: “Xena, why are you doing this?”

Hercules puts his hand out to stay Spiros' sword as he awaits Xena's answer.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_2056.jpg

Xena: (He's just passed the Daddy loyalty test.) “You’ve shown me all I need to know. Just raise your son to be as brave as you. Salmoneus will take you to him.”

Salmoneus: (To Herc) “You sure you don’t wanna join us? You know, for old times’ sake? I just don’t want to fall into any more traps.”

Hercules: “Yeah, I’m not sure how many people could stand the sight of you upside down.” :ack:

Salmoneus: “I happen to think I have nice legs.” (Trust me Sal... we've all seen them and once was definately enough!)

Hercules: “Salmoneus, Spiros will keep you safe.”

And off they go, in search of his Spiros' son.

Iloran: “Thank you, cousin.”

Hercules: “You’re welcome. Let’s not wait five years to see each other again.” (Offering the forearm grasp in farewell.)

Iloran: “Not a chance.”

Hercules: “Take care."

(Illoran exits stage right, and Herc turns to a shell shocked Warrior Princess; without an Army, without a purpose for the first time in how long???)

Hercules: So-- what now?”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_334ati.htm

Xena: “What do you say we go find out together?”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_338ati.htm

Hercules: “Yeah.”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_340ati.htm

EPILOGUE:

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_2108.jpg

A cloaked figure with a really, really bad manicure walks through the village and comes upon the dead body of Darphus.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_347ati.htm

He pulls the sword from its place in the chest, and with a wave of his hand, the dead man's body becomes upright.

Emissary: “Feeling better?”

Darphus' hand goes to the HOLE in his chest, before he answers with a question of his own.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_349ati.htm

Darphus:Who are you?”

Emissary: “Call me-- an emissary of Ares.”

Darphus:Ares, the god of war. What does he want with me?”

Emissary: “He wants to give you your revenge against Xena. But first, you must do something for him. You must kill Hercules.”

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_2137.jpg

(Right. This guy can't kill XENA, and you want him to kill HERCULES? :cardie: Him and what army???)

Darphus: “Hercules-- how? He destroyed my army.”

http://mikes-images.com/eps/gauntlet/pages/gauntlet_mq_353ati.htm

Emissary: “You’ll need help-- more help than any army can give you.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/gauntlet/herc_gauntlet_dArc_2149.jpg

Emissary: This beast can give you that help. Under your control, it can destroy Hercules once and for all.”

(Oh... THAT army!)

Darphus: [The Laugh of the undead!]

I just started watching Hercules earlier this year, and the last episode I watched before I took a break for a few months was the episode that introduced Xena. I'm planning on trying to get back to it either tomarrow or Thursday, and I was just wondering where during Hercules was the best place to start watching Xena?
Are you actually allowed to be posting those episode scripts like that on here? That seems kinda questionable to me.

The transcripts of these episodes have been posted at a infamous website in the xenaverse called whoosh.org for the last 15 years. The website is so "famous" that it was not only mentioned on the last Xena ep I recapped before starting the Hercules prequel, it was the FIRST line of act 1, "Soul Possessions".

Barb Binder: “Barb Binder from Whoosh. As webmaster of the official Xena fansite--

If you haven't gone there, its a gold mine of interviews with all the stars and main production folks including Robert Tapert, RJ Stewart, Steven Sears, Lucy Lawless, Renee OConnor, and articles on the history of Xena & Greek mythology among other things. I've mentioned the site frequently throughout this last year, and tried to encourage people to visit it for more discussion on various topics.

The only thing I'm adding to the whoosh transcripts long tolerated by the Xena production team, is my own commentary (which I've toned down in the last 25 episodes) the youtube vids and the screen caps that have existed at other websites for many years, along with the occasional :) exhortation to buy the dvds, rent from netflix, or signup with hulu-plus so people can actually see and hear what they are missing from reading these static recaps. I figure, ANYTHING I do to bring attention to a series that ended 10 years ago this year and which IS available on DVD & the internet for sale/download is a good thing for their bottom line.

Hopefully, 88101 views in the last 12 months is an attestment to the potential interest there still is out there in the sci-fi/fantasy market for this kind of show in general and this show in particular.

As for where to start watching Xena on Hercules? It sounds like you've already done that, if you started with "Warrior Princess", the ep where she seduces Iolaus.

According to whoosh.org , there are 2 eps between that and "The Gauntlet" which we've just finished.

Hope that helped. :bolian:

A xena vid for people who've seen the entire series.

All fall down:

^Ok, I didn't know any of that. I wasn't trying to be snotty, I honestly wasn't sure if what you were doing was OK.
No, I meant when to actually start watching Xena, the show. Would it be best to go ahead and start as soon as I finish Herc season 1, or does start later?

I didn't think you were being snotty, that's why I tried to give the background on whoosh. They (whoosh) aren't the only website that does the transcripts, they are just the best I've seen for Xena & Hercules, AND they are so much more than just transcripts.

I would start Xena right after season 1 of Hercules, and would watch them concurrently if you have both series. :vulcan:

There are several episodes where the stars cross over to the other series, and several characters (Callisto, Ares) and storylines (Dahak) that cross over fairly regularly, so watching both at once will compliment each other.

Oh, and speaking as someone who never watched Xena before 9/2010.... ENJOY! :) :bolian: :)

Episode 13 of season 1 Hercules: TLJ "Unchained Heart".

TEASER

Its a tiny village on the side of a VERY familiar pond/waterfall... men are packing up...

Villager1: "A good harvest this year. Our fields have flourished. Ah, greetings."

Villager2: "Hello."

Villager3: (Pulling on the halter of a recalcitrant mule) "Bathsheeba! Bathsheeba! You're not getting any
dinner if you don't move! Right now! Move! Move!"

Villager4: "Instead of, ah, all that vinegar, why don't you try a little honey? And, uh, if you don't have any honey, well, a carrot usually does the trick." [Laughs as he pulls out a carrot to feed to the mule] "Works every time, my friend."

Villager #4 suddenly stiffens and falls to the ground with an arrow in his back!

Darphus' army attacks village, killing everyone except a few, including the guy who was fighting with the mule, HE's now cowering on the ground.

Darphus: (To his men) "Take them to Illysia, except that one."

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/uh/herc_uh_dArc_016.jpg

Villager3: "No! No! Please don't kill me!"

Darphus: "Only if you obey my commands. Now, find Hercules. Tell him that Darphus rides again. And if he doesn't believe you, say you saw this... " (he opens his vest to show a jagged hole in his chest)

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/uh/herc_uh_dArc_023.jpg

Darphus: "the scar that the traitorous bitch, Xena, left me. What are you waiting for? Go!"

(How can she be a traitor if HE sent her through the gauntlet and then exiled her from camp?)

****

At a more hospitable village, Salmoneus is trying to reel in another sucker... er, client.

Salmoneus: "It'll be the first celebrity biography in
history."

Salmoneus: "And it'll be about you-- Hercules! Come on, the public's begging for it."

Hercules: "Sorry, I don't think of myself as a celebrity."

Salmoneus: "Trust me, we'll get rich."

Hercules: "We?"

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/uh/herc_uh_dArc_035.jpg

Xena: (Very matter of fact & tongue firmly in cheek) "Of course. Salmoneus has to do the writing. All you have to do is take the risks."

Notice she's back in her first uniform... from "Warrior Princess" and early "Gauntlet". I guess she went back to camp after defeating Darphus and found it. (He had it stripped it from her before running the gauntlet).

Even MORE telling... look to see what's MISSING from her uniform! (It will be more noticable when she stands up.) More on this later.

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_009ati.htm

Salmoneus: (To Xena) "I'll make you the same 60:40 deal, when I write your bio. So-- 60:40-- sound good?"\

Saved by the tragedy du jour!

Villager3: "Hercules!"

Salmoneus: "Excuse me. We're conducting business here."

Villager3: "Hercules, you gotta go to Illysia."

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_013ati.htm

Hercules: "What's wrong?"

Villager3: "Invaders-- led by a warrior called Darphus."

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/uh/herc_uh_dArc_049.jpg

Salmoneus: "Darphus?"

Villager3: [Nods his head]

Xena: "Can't be. He's dead."

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/uh/herc_uh_dArc_053.jpg

Villager3: (2 + 2 = 4) "By your hand, if you're Xena. He showed me his scar."

Xena: "What scar?"

Villager3: "A huge, gaping hole right in the middle of his
chest! He should've been dead!"

Hercules: "Only the gods have the power to bring Darphus back from the dead. I can bet which one it is."

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/uh/herc_uh_dArc_059.jpg

Xena: (ohhh, she's taking THIS one personally!) "That means nothing to me. I'm still going to Illysia to stop Darphus. I won't fail this time." (I vote for decapitation!)

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/uh/herc_uh_dArc_062.jpg

Hercules: "No. We're going to stop him."

Salmoneus: "And I'm gonna come watch for strictly literary reasons." (To the hapless Villager) "You gonna come join us?"

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/uh/herc_uh_dArc_060.jpg

Villager3: (DUH!) "Absolutely not. You don't know what you're up against."

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_024ati.htm

Salmoneus: "Hey! No problem. Huh!" (Turns to his TWO heroes) "Is there?"

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_026ati.htm

****

Meanwhile, back at Illysia, home camp of Xena's former army... Darphus rides in with his patrol and his prisoners.

Warrior: "It's Darphus!

Warrior: He's back!"

Warrior: "Darphus returns!"

Warrior: "Another victory!"

Darphus: "Lock the others up. Take that one to the temple."

Villager: "Why are you taking me to the temple?"

Darphus: "I want you to get religion."

Villager: "You know nothing of religion! You're gonna sacrifice me!"

Darphus: "Don't jump to conclusions. Throw him in."

Villager: "Oh! Oh, please! Oh! No!" (The man is tossed down the steps into the bowels of the temple, where he's lying on the bottom stair.)

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_029ati.htm

Warriors: "Enjoy yourself."

Warriors: "Get in there!"

The door is closed and locked once more.

****

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_031ati.htm

Down into the temple depths, we see Graegus walking towards his dinner. He barely fits under the ceiling.

Villager: [Screams]

****

Standing on the steps leading to the "Temple", Darphus turns and looks out over the compound as he smiles...

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_032ati.htm

Darphus: "Come and get it, Hercules."

Hercules actually started with a series of Tv movies which are part of the series. and then I would go onto herc season 1 and then xena season 1 and rotate the season up till season 5 of Herc. and then do xena season 5 & 6.

I actually haven't watched the movies. They didn't have them on Netflix Instant Watch when I started watching Herc, but once I go back to Herc after Xena S1, I was going to go back and watch them.

Don't get confused when you watch the telemovies that preceed Herc's season 1.

Lucy Lawless plays 2 different characters in 2 different movies (I watched one on youtube. Its the telemovie with Roma Downey as the Amazon Queen and Lucy is her 2nd in command), and Renee plays a different character in a third movie. This was obviously before Xena was even conceived much less cast.

I loved the interview with (?) who talked about watching Lucy Lawless stalk about the set during this movie. She had such a presence the (?) director (?) producer told the sound editor he wanted it to sound like she was walking in heavy boots even when she wasn't.

I was just looking at the episode guide on Wikipedia, and in the episode Warrior...Princess there's a Xena look alike called Diana, is this a Wonder Woman reference?

I doubt this is a WW reference, but that "would" have been a cute idea.

Diana IS a princess... but she couldn't kick ANYONE's a$$.

There are three hilarious comedies in this series, all of which include dopplegangers of Xena.

Diana is the first one we meet, and it's a great ep. :guffaw:

Finished up the first season of Herc today, so I'll probably star Xena Season 1 either Sunday or Monday. I tend to rotate between DVDs and Netflix, and since I did Netflix for the past 2 days, I was gonna work on my DVDs tomorrow.

Episode 13 of season 1 Hercules: TLJ "Unchained Heart".

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/uh/herc_uh_dArc_108.jpg

The trio head off for Darphus' camp.

ACT 1

I gotta say, once again... although the claw epaulets don't due much for me, I really like the "cape/cloak" they have hanging off Xena's left shoulder in this ep.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/uh/herc_uh_dArc_111.jpg

Salmoneus: "Hey! Wait for me! Wait, wait. Hold it! This ground is a little tricky. Hold on. Hold on."

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/uh/herc_uh_dArc_113.jpg

****

Salmoneus is on his hands and knees, speading a blanket on the grass, and pulling plates/goblets from his sack to sit upon the blanket. His actions have intrigued the demigod.

Salmoneus: "Well-- doesn't really have an outdoorsy motif-- but it'll do. Huh! I was afraid these had got broken."

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_041ati.htm

Hercules: "Salmoneus, can I ask you a couple of questions?"

Salmoneus: "At your service."

Hercules: "Number one, do you think we're on a picnic?"

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_042ati.htm

Salmoneus: "A picnic? No. But I don't think one should deny oneself creature comforts just 'cause you're in the..."

Xena just stands back and listens to the banter between these two "stud"muffins.

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_044ati.htm

Hercules: "And number two-- what do you think you're gonna put on those plates?"

Salmoneus: "Roast quail?"

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_048ati.htm

Hercules: "If you want quail, you'll have to catch it yourself."

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_047ati.htm

Although I really like the addition of the cape... has everyone noticed what is missing from Xena's outfit yet????

Salmoneus: "Fine. I'll do it!"

Hercules: and Xena: "You will?"

Salmoneus: "Hah-hah-hah! Yeah! I happen come from a family of fine quail catchers. But somebody else is gonna have to cook it. Great hunters don't cook."

Xena: "Don't look at me."

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_051ati.htm

Hercules: "Fine. I'll-- do the cooking."

Xena: "I guess that leaves the scouting to me."

Hercules: "No, wait. I-- think-- I should do the scouting."

Xena: "Oh, no-- you're cooking." and she smiles sweetly before leaving...

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_054ati.htm

Hercules: "Cooking."

****

[Salmoneus is quail hunting, which means he's walking through the woods, carrying a very large sack, making noises which I ASSUME are supposed to be quail calls... Suddenly, he hears a response, and as he creeps closer, he spies a large bush shaking.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/uh/herc_uh_dArc_160.jpg

Don't ask me why he's smiling so much, cuz it seems to me you wouldn't want to meet a quail large enough to shake a shrub as tall as he.

http://miroirdarc.com/hercules/s1/uh/herc_uh_dArc_163.jpg

Closer he creeps, ready to pounce when the pouncing was right...

And don't ask me why some GUY hops out from behind another tree and lands on Salmoneus back, flattening him in the process!]

Salmoneus: (He's lying prostrate on the ground, his bag under him and the attacker sitting on his back) "Oh, you made a big mistake, buster! I happen to be Hercules' best friend! And if you don't get-- What's so funny?"

The camera shifts and we now see it's IOLAUS who attacked Salmoneus and was lying atop the con man as we speak.

Iolaus: "You."

Salmoneus: "I'm a lot funnier, if you stop using my back as a couch! Now, get off me, or I'm gonna call Hercules! Come on!"

Iolaus: "Oh, like you actually know him?"

Salmoneus: "Know him?! I-- I happen to be his official biographer!"

Iolaus: "Well, that's funny, because I don't think of Hercules as the kind of hero who wants to sound his own horn."

Salmoneus: "I happen to think I know him a little better than you. In fact, he's right back there. If you get off me, I'll take you to him!"

Iolaus: "Sure, why not?"

****

The two are coming down the path toards Salmoneus' picnic. We notice Iolaus spy the big man sitting on the river bank.

Salmoneus: "All right, now when you meet him, whatever you do, don't say, 'You're Hercules?!' like it's a big surprise, 'cause frankly, he's not that much different than other men. Ah--he's bigger, and he's got more muscles."

Iolaus: "Yeah." (So says the man who's seen these muscles up close and personal.)

Salmoneus: "But, otherwise, he's about just the same. All right? You'll see. All right. All right. Now, there he is."

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_062ati.htm

Iolaus takes a few steps forward, glancing quickly back towards Salmoneus for a moment before launching himself into the FAN-BOY role.

Iolaus: "You're Hercules?!"

Herc jumps up and turns towards the familiar voice, his face only briefly registering the speaker's identity.

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_063ati.htm

Salmoneus: "I can't believe you said that! I told you not to!"

Hercules: "Yes I am. And you are?"

Iolaus: "They call me-- Iolaus."

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_065ati.htm

Hercules: "You're Iolaus."

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_068ati.htm

Iolaus: "Yeah-- last time I checked."

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_070ati.htm

Hercules: "That's good enough for me."

and Hercules turns away as if to say "that's that".

Salmoneus: "I don't believe this!"

The two men then embrace like long lost friends.

Hercules: "Iolaus is my best friend."

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_075ati.htm

Salmoneus: "You never mentioned him to me!"

Iolaus: "Oh-- holding out on your official biographer, huh?"

Hercules: "It's a-- long story. What brings you to these parts?"

Iolaus: "Xena-- she's on the loose again."

http://mikes-images.com/misc/unchained/pages/unchained_mq_076ati.htm

Salmoneus: "Xena? No, actually, she--"

Hercules: (To Salmoneus!) "Don't you have quail to catch?" (To Iolaus) "It's not-- Xena we have to worry about. Our real problem is with a-- warrior named Darphus. He's slaughtering everyone in sight for the greater good of Ares."

Iolaus: (Hey, he's easy!) "Why don't we get 'em both? It's good to be with you again, Hercules."

Hercules: "Yeah, it is, isn't it?"

Catching a CLUE...

Salmoneus: "Um-- I hear tummies rumbling. I better catch some Xena...ah... quail."

He walks away from this impromptu band of brothers in search of dinner.

Iolaus: "Who is that guy?"

Hercules: "My-- biographer."

Iolaus: "Oh."

Act 1 continues:
