Oh my.

How long has it been since the season 2 premiere, when we first met Solon, and Xena broke our hearts when she walked away without telling him who she was?

Xena: “One year, two months, and twelve days-- but who’s counting?”

And in that time, Xena was reintroduced to Solon, saw what Gabrielle & her brother's life would be like if she was never a warrior princess, killed Goliath, defeated the Bacchae while getting a serious Vampire kiss/bite on the neck From Gabrielle, ended the Trojan War, married her bestfriend off as she kissed Gabrielle goodbye, then watched her husband be murdered, watched her best friend descend into temporary madness over her grief, tracked and killed the murderer, met yet another "wrong side of the tracks" version of herself, was trapped first in Tarturas and then in Callisto's body, restored Ares' Godhood (is THAT what the kids are calling it now a days?) , restored the solstice holiday, won the first "Miss Known Universe" pageant, died, kissed Gabrielle on an astral plain, was brought back to life with ambrosia after she and Gabrielle shared the same body for a fight, trapped 2 immortals in a lava pit, met Minya and avenged the murder of Goliath's family, saved an innocent warrior from execution, saved Gabrielle from cremation, saved Ithaca's King, defeated Poseidon's curse and freed a Mariner and his crew, beat the Horde's chieftan, beat Baby Bliss's arrows, defeated the Furies while saving her Mother, purportedly received a hickey from Gabrielle before saving two young lovers from their timelooping tragedy, defeated Ares' newest warlord wannabe, traveled to Gaul and then Britannia to fight Caesar, Saw Gabrielle lose her blood innocence and destroyed Dahok's temple, saw a shattered Gabrielle become pregnant, delivered Gabrielle's daughter, then tried to kill Gabrielle's child before Gabrielle SEEMED to do it herself, then traveled to Greece and ultimately the land of Ch'in, where she was Betrayed by Gabrielle and consigned to a watery prison. In that prison she finally stopped hating, stopped desiring, stopped wanting, and so she was able to make up with Gabrielle and make even Green Dragons small, finally heard Gabrielle say she loved her and saw Xena say the same to her before traveling back to Greece so Xena could save Cleopatra and meets yet another version of herself before she restored the Godhoods of BOTH Ares and Aphrodite (I guess the kids really are calling it that now a days) . ;)

(I'll be BACK to finish this tonight. /// I'm Back! )

(Their final fight in the Ixion Cavern)
Callisto: “You’ll trap us both! That’s your plan, to trap me here while my pain keeps growing and growing and you die...
Xena: (Snear, her hands about Callisto's throat) “You’re wrong, Callisto. You let your pain kill you years ago. I’m gonna live with mine.”

What a shocking ep.

And you thought it was a big deal when Gabrielle betrayed Xena's plan to Ming Tien, and Xena landed on death row. I suspect that "Xena", like Lao Ma before her, would have accepted execution if she thought her absence would have kept Dahok from targeting Solon.

That line from Xena.... "I'm going to live with mine!" was a cry of such defiance, of such challenge to the evil known as Dahok... it was her only way to signal to him that no matter who he killed he would not succeed.

Recall, earlier in the ep... Hope and Callisto are reviewing Xena's response to a clue Hope had dropped.

Hope: “You’ll get your chance. Why do you think I freed you?”
Calllisto: “To make her suffer.”
Hope: “To make her stop. My father’s kingdom is at hand, the age of darkness, when Dahok will snuff out the people Xena loves, till he’s crushed her very soul and as she goes, so goes the world.”

But scream as loud as she might, Xena can only bluff so long. Kaleipus is murdered, Solon is too. And Gabrielle? She is as dead to Xena as Solon.

I shivered the first time I saw this, when I watched the scene where Gabrielle picks up the poison and tips it back to drink.

Would Gabrielle do it?

Would Xena arrive on the scene and send her trusty Chakram flying through the air to knock it from Gabrielle's hands, so that Xena could accuse her of taking the "easy way" out by avoiding the pain and remorse that she so "richly" deserved?

We see the poison drink slowly be poured out onto the ground, and then Gabrielle senses she's not alone. She looks over to see Xena watching... no chakram in hand... no compassion for her "best friend" who just put her own child to death.

Lucy mentions in the interviews for this one, that one of the hardest things is for a parent to "give up" a child... and how its even harder to then get the child back only to lose them again.

That happened to both women.

Gabby gave birth recently, "gave up" that child in Britannia with no expectation of ever seeing her again. Suddenly she appears, and Gabrielle feels the Greek Gods must have provided for her? Did Aphrodite look into her heart and grant her that one secret wish she dared not speak aloud?

But what the fates give with one hand, they take away with another. Not only must she lose "Hope", she must kill the child herself to atone for the horror inflicted on that other great love in Gabrielle's life.

Xena: “Solon, I don’t think... ”
Solon: “Please. My uncle always said, if anything happened to him, you’d be there for me.”
Xena: “And he was right. But all your ties are here. Don’t you wanna be with someone that you know-- someone that you care about?”
Solon:
“Yes, you. You said we were friends and real friends are like family, right?”
Xena: “Like family.”
Solon: “Then take me with you-- please? Don’t leave me.”

That other great love in Xena's life stood before her with those big blue eyes and begged her to love him enough to take him with her.

It was everything she could have hoped for, could have prayed for, everything she could of dreamed... But this is the Xenaverse... and we know that NOTHING is ever that easy, right Perdicus?

This next scene, its like a knife through my heart in its simplicity, in how quiet Xena is until Gabrielle refuses to heed her...

Xena: “Solon? Solon? Hey-- hey, Solon. Solon.”
Gabrielle: “Xena? No. No. No.”
Xena: (Whispers) "Get out".
Gabrielle: “Xena-- ”
Xena: (Whips about) “GO!"
(Gabrielle listens and runs away)

Xena: (Quietly, gently) "Solon. Solon... please. I’m here, now. Your mom is here now... just like you always wanted.”

[Xena lays her head back and Screams until Callisto can hear it deep in her lair]

As deeply searing as Xena's pain is, Gabrielle's is not to be ignored.

I held my breath as Ephiny quickly saw through Gabrielle and sent the children away to play so the women could "talk".

Ephiny: “Gabrielle, what is it? What’s wrong?”....
Gabrielle: “I can’t believe it’s only been a couple of months. It feels like a lifetime since Xena and I were in Britannia.”
Ephiny: “Word was Xena helped Boadicea defeat Caesar.”
Gabrielle: “That’s true. While we were there-- I, uh-- I got into a... a very bad situation.”
Ephiny:
“What do you mean? What happened?”
Gabrielle: “I had a child. And, sh... she died. I named her Hope. That’s what she was. She was my hope that, um... despite everything that had happened... this child was... was worth it all.”

Amazing, how she phrased that.

"I" got into... not "I was tricked, not "I" was despoiled/violated by an evil entity intent on destroying the world.

I wonder "what" was Ephiny thinking right then? Rape? Date rape? Fell in with the wrong crowd/ fell in love with a "bad boy" who then deserted her? Or maybe "Where" in Tarturas was XENA when this was happening?!" :scream:

What we know, is that Ephiny, Queen and Mother reached out with compassion to her fellow Amazon.

Ephiny: “You can’t blame yourself for her death. Only the Fates know why sleep steals a child’s life. I’m so sorry.” :wah:

And then the child who's custody you have given up, walks back into your life. And the woman you are, the woman you've been for the last three years takes center stage. Not the warrior, not the bard, but the woman willing to give her heart to anyone willing to love her back.

Gabrielle: “That is a lie. You are not evil. Never believe that.”
Hope/Fayla: “My mother thought so. She tried to drown me in a basket. She wanted me dead.”
Gabrielle: “She wasn’t trying to drown you. She was trying to save your life.”
Hope/Fayla: “You weren’t there! You don’t know!”
Gabrielle: “I do. The basket is all there was. I... I had to put you in it or, I had to watch you be killed. Now, I had no choice. I loved you.”
Hope:
“You? You loved me?”
Gabrielle: “I... I prayed that the gods would protect you... and they did. They brought you home.”

The scene where Xena realizes "Fayla" is Hope is supercharged as Gabrielle is railing against Xena's prejudice against Fayla. Xena's face when she's trying to understand this protective stance of Gabrielle is masterful, going from confusion to dawning realization and frightening certitude.

Xena: “Maybe it’s not too late. She’s young. Poison’ll kill her if her powers aren’t mature.”
Gabrielle: “Poison? Xena, she is my child!”
Xena:
“She is not a child! She is a body-- a vessel-- an
instrument for evil.
That is all!”

My heart ached when Ephiny came to get Xena, and the Warrior sent her away. Then my heart cried when Xenon came in. The boy Xena delivered from Ephiny's womb just 18 months ago. One of only two boys in that camp that Xena had delivered.

One was dead, and beyond her assistance.

But one was still very much alive, and he needed her.

The scenes between Xena and Callisto were beyond feeling.

Callisto: [Gets arrow through heart, courtesy of Xena] “Hurts, doesn’t it? Losing your family... rips out your heart, your guts... your feelings. All that’s left is the pain, right? Welcome to the club.”

What Callisto never realized, is that Xena: Warrior Princess has always been a charter member of THAT particular club!

Xena: “You got that right. It all ends here with me.”
Callisto:
“You don’t seem to get it, do you? You’ve won. All these years I’ve spent living to destroy you? Thinking that only if I could give you the same pain that you gave me, I’d be rid of it, and life would go on. And then I do and nothing changes. I don’t feel better, just empty. So you let me go, Xena. You can’t win this battle. And you’ve already won the war.” (She tries to walk by Xena)
Xena: “Oh, it’s not that simple. I won’t let it be.” [Attacks Callisto]
Callisto: “I’m warning you Xena, you’re nothing to me, now.”
Xena:You’re breakin’ my heart.”
Callisto: (Gutteral) “Walk away.”
Xena: “Go to Tartarus.” :scream:

The funeral was surreal. Was it for Solon and Kaleipus or Solon and Hope?

Two pyres, two people standing guard at the head of each.

And one, one who lives with her heart on her sleeve, turns (like we've seen her do at too many other funerals)... turns to look up at the woman who has always been her strength, her protector, her friend, and admits...

Gabrielle: “If, if I had just done what you said when you told me to do it, then they would still be alive, Kaleipus and Solon.”
Xena: (With deadly quietude) “No. Don’t you even speak his name.”

Is this the woman who leapt from the tip of a tree at the top of a cliff, to vault herself onto a cursed ship just to be with Gabrielle?

Gabrielle: (Pleads) “Xena.”
Xena: “No. No, you lied to me. I trusted you, and you lied to me. And now Solon is dead. My son is dead because of you.”

Is this the woman who was willing to give up her sight for Gabrielle?

Who was willing to risk becoming a Bacchae forever because of Gabrielle?

Who was willing to lose her humanity to deliver Gabrielle from the Horde, who fought Dahok's demon to save Gabrielle from his altar, who stood up to a Titan to save Gabrielle, who allowed her dignity as a WARRIOR slip before a fellow WARRIOR as Xena pounded the small body and breathed into the unfeeling mouth of the friend slipping into death until she forced her to turn around and come home.

Gabrielle: (Still looking up at the woman she's known for so long, who's face has been turned away from her.) “I love you, Xena.”

Xena doesn't respond.

Xena won't look at the woman who's heart is breaking next to her, and so Gabrielle slowly turns and walks away as Xena lets her tears loose until she too must walk away... in the opposite direction.

Yes, I think Iolaus knew who it was but he just couldn't leave her to die even when you could already see the damage in her eyes 'No, I shall never cry

I believe that was pronounced "Oi shall nevih croi." :)

The only problem I have with the Kiwi accent is when they call our heroine XeneR

Gotta love the Kiwis, possibly our favourite commonwealth cousins:)

Maternal Instincts-hooooooooooo:wtf::eek: If you have tears prepare to shed them now. In a set of wonderful performances I have to single out Hudson, when Callisto hears Xena's agony and has her moment of triumph only to realise that her ultimate revenge STILL doesn't give her any joy, it's literally soul destroying. Her telling Xena that is powerful and porcupine-arrow Callisto is also brilliant. Also rather like the scenes where Callisto almost acts like Hope's mother, you wonder did she have a little sister?

But just wait and see what's to come......

It opens with a view of the funeral we just witnessed.

We see Hope return and free Callisto from Xena's makeshift prison.

Iolaus meets the Warlord Xema as she's about to burn Cirra to the ground, and later watches the Conqueror Xena meet/deal with a rebel named Gabrielle.

As far as Xena: Warrior Princess goes... that just about sums this ep up.

As far as Callisto goes... it doesn't even come close, so watch it online.

Episode 58 season 3 # 12 "The Bitter Suite"

Callisto:
Illusia is music,
A world built on rhyme.
It's carved out of space
In the absence of time.
You've tasted how evil
And good coexist.
The bitter and sweet of it--

Small white dog:
All in the lips that you kissed.

This is such a kookey amazing ep, that its good they started as they did, showing us how far these two have gone away from each other.

The most telling thing I read, re: the violence of Xena dragging Gabrielle to the cliff to toss her over, was that TPTB had to have her mount "another horse" to do it, since Argo never would have obeyed Xena's order to do that to Gabrielle.

Talk about attention to detail.

Its impossible to do this ep justice, because there is so much going on all the time... even the transcripts at whoosh.org are a poor substitute, so I'll concentrate on just a few points and let the girls' own commentary carry the bulk of the praise.

Gabrielle: (In the chamber of echoes) I HURT INSIDE! Don't you?

:weep:

I immediately flashed back to the end of The Deliverer, when Gabrielle told Xena that after the temple of Dahok was destroyed.

Xena, on the other hand, went somewhere else...

Xena:
My heart is hurting beyond words.
The pain is tearing up my soul.
These days have seen my spirit die,
My life propelled out of control.
My wounds lie naked to the world--
My depth of suffering exposed.
This damaged past can never heal
Until this nightmare book is closed

Gabrielle:
My heart is hurting beyond words.
The pain is tearing up my soul.
Please tell me how I can retrieve
The life that all this sadness stole?
Because of you this happened!
Because you had to carry out
Your vengeful, little plans!

Xena:
It's you who should feel guilty!
Because of you my child is dead.
His blood is on your hands!

Gabrielle:
If only you had never brought me there.

Xena:
If only you had done what you were told.

Gabrielle:
It's you who's to be blamed.

Xena:
And you should be ashamed!

:scream:

These women do NOT pull any punches as they rail against each other. But shout as they must, they do NOT listen to each other, until...

Gabrielle: (The spinning wheel bursts into flames)It's Dahok! (Flames reach out like they did once before, and grab Gabrielle as she sceams!) No!!!!!
Xena:
Gabrielle?
Gabrielle: (She's being pulled into the spinning wheel by the flames as she cries out once more) No! Not again! Noooooo!
Xena: I'm coming!
Gabrielle: Not again! Please!
Xena:
(She grabs Gabrielle by the hands) Hold on tight.
Gabrielle: (She's been lifted off the floor and into the wheel) No! (Pleads to Xena) Don't let go! Don't let go! Noooooo!

(Xena loses her grip and Gabrielle disappears into the wheel, as the flames now encircle Xena's wrists and pull her through to places unknown.)

It all began before Hope was born, before Solon was killed.

It began on that altar in Britannia for Gabrielle, and on that beach for Xena.

It was when they stopped listening, and started lying to each other and themselves.

Xena went to Britannia for revenge, not to help an old friend. Gabrielle was but an afterthought until she was literally on the altar of Dahok, and by then... by then... both women were hurting inside for the "bad situation" that Xena allowed Gabrielle to "get into" (Paraphrasing Gabby to Ephiny) and those lies began.

Well intentioned lies, and yet lies all the same.

Lies that grew larger and more deadly as time went on.

There was no place for them to go after that, except "downhill".

Gabrielle: (Looks about, sees she's back on Dahok's altar in his temple, and her hands are once again covered in...) Blood. No! Not here. It's Dahok. This is where it started. I can't! I can't!

(I guess she's not much of a fan for GOT fan fic either. :vulcan:)

If there is one constant in the Xenaverse, its that when handed a problem, Xena can't help but try and solve it.

Xena: (Gabby has been crying over the blood) Look-- Gabrielle, think. Everything about this world has been a torment. We've been guided through it for a reason. Whatever happens, we have to go through it together.

Evil Choir:

It begins very small,
Seems like nothing much at all.
Just a germ, just a speck, just a grain.
But the seed has been sewn,
And before you know it's grown,
It has spread through your life like a stain.
And its power will strangle your love and your joy.
And its hunger consumes-- for it lives to destroy!

Xena: Hatred, Gabrielle, that's what we're fighting -- hatred.

I loved the fact that while the four figures of Hatred initially revealed to us... Dahok, Caesar, Callisto and Ares were "easy" to guess, the remaining two manifestations remained cloaked awhile longer as the chorus sang.

Evil Chorus:
Learning hate is an art.
Even people who are smart
Can be caught, can be crushed, can be creamed.
Hate has swallowed you whole.
Did you think you're in control?
Hate you thought, hate you spoke, hate you dreamed.

(And as the last two cloaked figures remove their hoods, we find 2 sight-less figures: A Gabrielle with a sledge hammer to break the legs of a crucified Xena... and a Dahok Dagger wielding Xena ready to stab Gabrielle chained to the altar.)

Gabrielle: NO!
Xena: Gabrielle!

POW!

It is done.

Evil has broken Xena's legs yet again, and pierced Gabrielle's heart if not her flesh.

And after how many months in the Xenaverse and in syndicated TV land... the lies have stopped, the introspection has started and its finally time for the healing to begin.

Xena: I never dreamed that we'd be distanced by a hate, That all the trust we had would go.
Gabrielle: How could I hate you?
Xena: How could it come to pass, this awful twist of fate?
Gabrielle: How could I hurt you?
Xena: This madness can't be so
Gabrielle: I can't believe it.
Xena: I never dreamed that any barriers could rise.
Gabrielle: Or that I'd ever see the stranger in your eyes.
Xena: Our hearts were hurting both the same.
Gabrielle: The hurt was tearing up our souls
Xena: The fury in us made us blind.
Gabrielle: We could not see beyond the pain.

Imagine the music swelling, becoming more glorious as the two friends realize that the only force that could have separated them, was also the only force that could bring them back together... their willing hearts.

So, the women who were at each other's throats in the chamber of echoes, have defeated not only their own mutual hatred but that quartet of evil and are now fleeing the Temple with Gabrielle supporting Xena.

Interesting, that scene.

Gabrielle was in her usual garb, but Xena was still limping from the sledge hammer blow evil Gabrielle had laid on her legs... and she was still dressed in the "frock" Xena wore when Caesar had her crucified on that beach oh so long ago.

That should have been our warning!

This way, there be Dragons!

Gabrielle passes easily through the final waterfall barrier, but Xena can't. Something's been left unsaid.

Gabrielle: You lied.

Yes, Gabrielle... she did.

She killed Ming Tien, then placed him on his throne and turned him so you couldn't see the weapon in his right temple. She waited for you to return, and then began speaking as if she was finishing her lecture on his losing face with his people, and losing his right to rule.

She let you praise her for living up to Lao Ma's ideals, and despite fabricating this elaborate farce, this lie, with the same mouth she then proclaimed her love for you. And her mouth's been filled with ashes ever since.

Xena:
Yes, I lied.
Thought I could protect you from the truth.
Deliver you from evil,
Spare your innocence and youth.
That I could simply will it
Was the real untruth.
I was wrong.
I wore a mask to cover my deceit.
But underneath it all
I couldn't keep away my doubt.
Now I'm left without a mask
And one question left to ask...

I'm sorry, please help me, forgive me.
Don't hate me, don't leave me, forgive me.
Forgive me my debt as only you could.
Forgive me the hate; replace evil with good.
Forgive me and find out that you--
Will be able to forgive yourself, too.

But Gabrielle isn't the only person that Xena loved so desperately that she lied, and he's been patiently waiting.

My dear Solan--
I never told you that you were my son.
I didn't know the days we had left were so few.
If I only knew, I'd have been with you.
I'm so sorry,
I couldn't be the mother you deserved.
And I regret that I missed your first step--
Your first word--
That I never heard.
Now it seems absurd.

And finally, to both Gabrielle and Solon...

Can you forgive me?
Open up your heart and let me in.
No matter if the Fates against us turn.
There's one thing through all of this I've learned.
That what I need from you

Is to...
Forgive me, I'm sorry, believe me.
Stop hating, stop hurting, Forgive me.
Forgive those who'd harm you,
Do good for those who hate.
Forgive, if not forget,
I know it's not too late.
Forgive me and you'll discover, too,
That the love of your love is.... you.

:luvlove:

I'm afraid I'm with Renee on this one, Lucy.

:sigh:

I know, I know.... "I'm" such a sap.

Interestingly i was watching a documentary on the Star Wars mythology the other day and Peter Jackson amongst others was saying that Jabba is a sexy figure because he's the King Pimp sitting on his throne? Not sure I'd agree although Jackson confesses it may be because he thinks he looks like him

The Bitter Suite aka Xena; Rock Opera

So many good things!

Much as I love Buffy's 'Once More with Feeling' Xena did it first and possibly did it better. What's more unlike the Scrubs or Ally McBeal musicals they both deal with some major serious issues for the characters, not just musicals for their own sake. Some great singers, only Renee and Hudson being dubbed, naked Gabby again which is always a good thing. Simply can't choose my favourite song, they're all so good and always nice to see Lila again.
I never did buy the idea of Solon being capable of arranging all this, I figure Aphrodite must have helped out somewhere? The 'Gabdrag' is utterly shocking, I couldn't believe it when I first saw it.
Almost unnoticed amongst it all this is the only time Joxer meets Ephiny. They act like old friends though. This is also the last time we see Xena and Ephiny meet onscreen and Xena breaks her arm. In fairness though Xena could easily have killed Joxer, Ephiny and the other Amazons but she still holds back, Ares hasn't won her over completely yet.
Possibly my favourite ep ever:)

:bolian:

I didn't realize this was Joxer & Ephiny's only pairing, but in a sense they "are" old friends. Old friends of Xena & Gabrielle. "Any friend of Gabrielle's is a friend of mine."

That line... "She was dying out here. You didn't see her at the death of her child, the pain she was in, the despair. When she and Xena parted, she came to us." ...was heart wrenching and you really could see the "Queen" in Ephiny take hold. Especially as Xena tore into camp on Argo and she tried to talk the vengence craving Xena out of her plan.

That was their last (X & E) scene together? Last scene where Ephiny was alive? (Her funeral is one of those scenes that make me tear up whenever I see it. :wah: I TOLD you I was a sap!) Well, technically they were together in season 6, but only Gabby could see her, so the two didn't get to interact.

As for not killing Amazons... do you really think Xena could have stopped herself on that cliff, if Gabrielle hadn't?

Aphrodite? Maybe.

What about Hades and Celesta? They BOTH owe a huge debt to Xena.

I don't know if its my #1 fav.... although I'd have to say its easily in my top 12, if not the top 6.

ROCK ON, Xena!

I thought Bitter Suite was an amazing thing - plot resolution, goofiness and high drama in, basically, an opera.

Eventually, when Buffy did its musical episode, I found I liked the Buffy ep more. It's probably just a preference for musicals over opera. Opera is just singing the dialog, a musical is a buncha catchy songs.

I suspect this ep is for people who don't like or understand musical theater. And for those fans who over the early part of season 3 came to distrust TPTB at Xena and where they were "taking" our favorite "best friends".

Whatever.

I'm just "really" glad they made it.

Like all serious eps that end up ripping your heart out with a breast dagger, this one begins with comedy. Gabrielle trying to show off in front of the original Olympic gymnast, Xena.

Needless to say, it ends badly and we watch Gabrielle soldier on, trying to out walk Xena to prove she's "alright".

LOVED the way Xena got her boot off almost as much as the way she has Gabrielle conditioned to "hit the deck" when that warning is shouted.

And, as all things in the Xenaverse, I loved the fact that Xena met and warned the first Greek Marathoner...Pheidippides to pace himself or he could die on his heroic run to Athens.

Xena, that "Wonder Woman" is always thinking, always planning, and we see those wheels turn as she's walking with Argo as Gabrielle (for once!) gets to ride.

Gabrielle: "Stupid ankle, if only I hadn't tried that."
Xena: "Well, it that is the worse thing that happens today, I'll be thrilled."

JINX!

Lets see, they get waylaid by a Spartan deserter, which is an impossibility in the world of Spartan soldiers and Xena easily disarms him. Then Argo disobeys Xena and listens to Gabrielle during a skirmish with a Persian advance party and brings the Battling Bard into the thick of it where she catches an arrow in the chest. A POISONED arrow, none the less. Then they get rid of their Persian spy and go looking for a militia, Xena's secret armory, and an antidote only to find an empty village and a broken bottle that once held the life saving medicine.

Gabrielle: "No serum. No militia. You know, Xena, they say that bad
things come in threes. How about that armory, huh?" [Coughs]

and then, in the secret "armory"...

Xena: "Yep, we just got there. We bought ourselves some time with that shortcut. (Pulls a spear from a box) Not too shabby for three years. I hid these here in case I ever had another army. Didn't think I'd need them again."
Gabrielle: "I didn't know that I qualified as an army."
Xena: [whispers as she pulls a coverlet off the weapons and brings it to cover Gabrielle)] "OK."
Gabrielle: (Laying where Xena left her) "Xena, in case this poison starts spreading faster, I do have a last request."
Xena: "You can tell me about it later, years from now, when we're old and gray."
Gabrielle: "Oh, that's funny. Really, uh, after you've slowed down the Persians, if I can't make it, I want you to save yourself. I don't want to be a burden to you."
Xena: "I can't promise that."

And so it begins.... the most intimate episode about this relationship in the "last three years", and arguably in all six years of the series, in both word, touch, and emotion.

As we watch Xena scout the region for Persians and search for herbs to treat Gabrielle, we are inevitably brought back to that "bunker" and to the young woman prostrate with the poison coursing through her body. Sick as she is, she is still trying to support her warrior princess.

Gabrielle: "Well, we only have to delay them, right? Just bloody their noses a little bit."
Xena: "You just let me worry about their noses. I've gotta find someplace to hide you until after the battle."
Gabrielle: "I guess I'm gonna miss out on all the fun, huh? You know, it's occurred to me that, this is just a clever diversion, to make me forget about my boots. [Coughs] My chest feels so he-- heavy. (Watches Xena lean forward and examine the phelgm on Gabrielle's cover, and touches her mouth to confirm its origin) What?"
Xena: "Blood. The arrow must've grazed your lung. The poison-- "
Gabrielle: (Looks away from Xena) "I just ran out of time didn't I?"

ACT ENDS:

We come back to the bunker to see Xena, the WARRIOR Princess has made up her mind. She's resigning from the field, she is surrendering the battle to the Persians in order to bring her friend to safety.

The only problem is, the woman she's trying to save won't let her.

Xena: "Gabrielle, quiet!"
Gabrielle: "Look, I know what you're doing. You can't. If you don't hold them
up... "
Xena: "I am not going to let you die. I can still get you to Thessaly and the antidote."
Gabrielle: "And then what? What happens to Athens? What's my life worth then?"
Xena: "First things first."
Gabrielle: "The first thing is the greater good, you taught me that. You taught me that there are things in life worth dying for, things that hold a higher meaning than our own existence."
Xena: "Not your existence."
Gabrielle: "Why? 'Cause I'm your friend?"
Xena: "Yes!"
Gabrielle:
"Well then, honor my memory. We both know that I'm right. This is right. Xena, promise me, promise me that you will not leave this battle because of me."

Whoa.

Way to hit a Warrior below the belt, Gabrielle. Appeal to her code of honor AND her loyalty to her friend.

But wait?

What's the problem here?

300 Persians against one Warrior Princess who can wipe out a Chinese Emperor, his guards and tear down his castle with simply the power of her mind?

Gabrielle is in a fevered sleep, as Xena works to continue to arrange their meager defenses. As her friend groans in the background, Xena's eyes light upon an urn, and she flashes back to those lessons Lao Ma once taught her. But Xena was right when she told Gabrielle "that power" required a purity of essence that was gone. Xena, the Warrior Princess, the friend, couldn't "stop willing, stop desiring, stop hating" to save her life. Xena was too frightened at that other life she was about to lose to concentrate on anything else.

Gabrielle: [Coughs as Xena attempts telekinesis, fails, then destroys vase with a vicious kick in her frustration. The noise arouses the delerious Gabrielle who calls out] "Help me."
Xena:
"Hey. Hey. I'm here."
Gabrielle: "Xena?"
Xena: "Yes?"
Gabrielle: [Whispers] "You've got to take me with you, teach me everything you know. You can't leave me here in Poteidaia. I wanna go with you. I've studied the stars, spoken with philosophers, and I have the gift of prophecy. I can be very valuable to you. Take me with you. I want so much to be like you."
Xena: "And I want to be like you." [XWP Cries silently]

Okay... wait just a minute while I go and replace the kleenex box.

Oh man, that was a killer.

Suddenly, The BATTLE is ON and Xena is mowing the Persians down 2 and 3 at a time until OH CRAP! One got the drop on the Warrior Princess and he CUTS HER THROAT!

Gabrielle, gods bless her, sits bolt upright from her prophetic nightmare, drenched in sweat. Quickly she realizes "it was just a dream", and turns to see Xena asleep next to her.

And thus begins the scene that launched 1,000 Xena/Gabrielle shipper vids/fanfics.

Could you even IMAGINE this ep BEFORE "The Bitter Suite"?

Gabrielle wakes up to find Xena ready to quit the field yet again. Xena may have "changed her mind", but Gabrielle has not!

Gabrielle: "It's too late for me."
Xena: "I don't accept defeat. There are always choices. I'm done paying for my past mistakes. My responsibility now is you."
Gabrielle: "Don't."
Xena: "Don't argue with me now."
Gabrielle: "Don't you argue with me! I know that I'm going to die, I accept that. Why can't you? A long time ago, I accepted the consequences of our life together, that it might one day come to this. It has. I'm not afraid."
(And now the second scene that launched 1,000 more music vids...)

Xena: (Sits down, next to Gabrielle) "You always said that I was the brave one. Look at you now. If this is to be our destiny, let's see it out together. Even in death, Gabrielle I will never leave you." (and she grasps Gabrielle's hand)

One of the things I really love about this ep is how much the two actresses put into it without "overplaying" the melodrama. An example is in this next to the last tear jerking scene. Xena looks down at Gabrielle and thinks she's died. The makeup artist did a wonderful job, since Gabrielle DOES look dead. She goes quickly to her side, and is reassured when Gabrielle speaks. While Xena is yet again honest in her answers to Gabrielle's points, Xena is changing the poultice on her wound and wincing ever so slightly as she does it.

Xena: (Waves her hand slightly over her open eyes) "Gabrielle?"
Gabrielle: (Doesn't move, doesn't blink, but finally answers breathlessly) "I'm still here, I think. Strange, I seem to have moved beyond the pain."
Xena: "Here, I have a poultice ready for you."
Gabrielle: "No, please, don't, don't bother with that. I can't fight. I can't be of any help to you, so please, I'm just distracting you."
(And now the third scene that launched 1,000 more music vids...)
Xena: "But you're my source, Gabrielle. When I reach down inside
myself and do things that I'm not capable of, it's because of you. Don't you know that by now? (Puts the poultice in its place on Gabrielle's shoulder) Let's just see this one through together, all right? Here we go. Yeah. Uh-uh." [Carries Gabrielle up the ladder to the loft]

A while ago I admitted that the real reason I decided to sit through a second running of this series so quickly (1st run was Sept-Oct 2010) was because I wanted to know when was the first time one of these women mentioned love. It happened "all" the time in the later seasons, but when was the first?

Well, the first time Gabrielle told Xena she loved her, was at the end of "The Debt 2", and Xena responded in kind. There was something not quite satisfying about that scene for me, and I think it was because both women were actively lying to each other (about OTHER things) at the time.

The second time Gabrielle told Xena she loved her was at the end of "Maternal Instincts". It was more heart felt and "real"... and yet Xena totally ignored Gabrielle's claim as she watched her son's funeral pyre burn.

For those of us who love Musical Theater, we know that the first time Xena initiated a discussion on love with Gabrielle was in that final song sung both to Gabrielle and Solon...

Forgive me, I'm sorry, believe me.
Stop hating, stop hurting, Forgive me.
Forgive those who'd harm you,
Do good for those who hate.
Forgive, if not forget,
I know it's not too late.
Forgive me and you'll discover, too,
That the love of your love is.... you.

But not everyone can follow that logic, and so in the loft after Gabrielle apologizes for her actions in China, we hear it clear, unequivocally and unprovoked from Xena herself.

Breaks ones heart when you realize, this Warrior princess, this Champion expects to die today.

Xena: "Gabrielle, that's all in the past. All I want is to be with you right now. You're my best friend, my family. I love you, Gabrielle."
Gabrielle: "I love you, Xena."
Xena: "Till the other side, then, we'll be together."
Gabrielle: "Till then."

Whoa.

And for the guys who only watch Xena for the skimpy outfits and the awesome fight scenes.... HOLD ON TO YOUR HATS!

A HUGE FREAKING FIGHT ERUPTS with spears and arrows and chains and boiling oil and fire breathing and chakram tosses and poison and fist-a-cuffs and flips and THREE levels to traverse up and down until she CONVINCES the remaining Persians to JUST LEAVE so she can get back to that friend dying upstairs in the loft.

Xena: "Gabrielle, I have the antidote." [Xena is attacked by three? Persians who didn't heed her warning. She dispatches them easily]
Hey, Gabrielle. Hey. Hey, can you hear me?"
Gabrielle: "Hmm-- are we dead?"
Xena: "No. No. Here, drink this."
Gabrielle: (Coughs as the antidote goes down her throat, and Xena lays down next to her) "I thought that you said those guys were tough."
Xena: "Must have caught them on an off day."
Gabrielle: "You're hurt." (She's bleeding from a sword strike on her left arm)
Xena: (Eyes half closed, she's trying to sleep already) "No, I'm all right. Hmm, you just get some sleep. We'll be heading out in a few hours."
Gabrielle: "Xena?"
Xena: "Hmm?"
Gabrielle: "When we get to Thessaly, you still owe me a new pair of boots."

I love a woman who never forgets her priorities.

Episode 60 (my counting) season 3 # 14 "FORGIVEN"
This one is going to be quick.

My 2nd favorite line of the episode:
Gabrielle: (To Xena) “Oh, no. I knew you were evil, but you were obnoxious, too?”

My Favorite line of the episode... and maybe even of the first three years.
Gabrielle: (To Tara) “... I sleep next to Xena.”

Good lord, I never realized how terratorial Gabrielle was, until this ep. :guffaw:

The opening "fight" was painful to watch, but I chocked it up to the fact that the last girl Gabrielle interacted with, she killed. (Hope). But there's a difference between refusing to fight back, and getting your ear used as snack food, isn't there?

I did enjoy Gabrielle reasserting herself, not only with Xena....

Gabrielle: “Xena? Can I talk to you for a minute?”
Xena: “Yeah.”
Gabrielle: “I’m gonna kill her. I’m gonna rip out her throat. I’m going to eat her eyeballs.”
Xena: “Gabrielle, calm down.”
Gabrielle: “Xena, she almost got us killed. I can’t work like this!

But also with Tara. I really felt for Both Gabrielle and "The Brat" in their "2nd go around" when Gabby kept begging her to "stay down!" after beating her nearly senseless. Naturally the brat wouldn't listen, and thank the gods Xena came in when she did or I think Gabrielle might have had a 3rd murder on her hands in one season.

Gabrielle: “Be smart for a change! Stay down. What are you doing?! I don’t wanna hurt you anymore!”
Tara: “Don’t do me any favors.”
Gabrielle: “Stay down, Tara!”
Tara: (Xena zooms in and catches Tara as she tries to stand up once more to face Gabrielle) “Go away! I was just, I was just giving her my best shot! [Tara cries as she's collapsed in Xena's arms] I’m bad! I know I am! I’m really, I’m really, really bad!”
Xena: (Xena's maternal side wins out as she reassures Tara)“No, you’re not.”

And of course, after all the X/G introspection of the last two eps, it was nice to get just a little more bonding over something besides each other.

(The two women have just cleaned Tara up after the beating she got from Gabrielle. Tara has just walked away.)
Gabrielle: (To Xena) “You are good.”
Xena: “What are you talking about?”
Gabrielle: “You left us (Gabby & Tara) alone together, figuring that this would happen.”
Xena: “That’s ridiculous! What do you think I am, a prophet, or something?”
Gabrielle: “No, just a good judge of human nature.”
Xena: “You’re giving me way too much credit.”
Gabrielle: “Thanks, Xena.”
Xena: “For what?”
Gabrielle: “I had so much anger for that poor, little kid, I never gave her a chance, and you helped me deal with that.”
Xena: “You did everything just right, (Tosses Gabrielle her fighting staff) including a little bit of, uh tough love.”

My fav Xena line of the ep: (After listening to Tara's confession that the teen has done a "lot of really bad things" in her short life.)
Xena: (To Tara, with a smile) “You wanna compare bad deeds, I’ll bury ya.”

Saddest moment?

The end.

Gabrielle and Tara are kneeling in the Temple of Apollo, seeking forgiveness for their past misdeeds. Tara looks back and sees Xena, standing just outside.

Tara: (To Gabrielle) “What’s Xena doing? Doesn’t she wanna be forgiven?”

Its not that, sweetpea.

Xena can't forgive herself.

For those who haven't watched the entire series... be forewarned.

This inability will return in the finale. :wah:

I hope you realise that you've not got me hooked on Youtube commentaries and I'm currently working my way through 4 seasons of them!

'One Against an Army' is a simple although fun story. Having just got Xena and Gabby back together we're threatened with them losing one another again. Particularly touching is the scene where Gabrielle, delerious through poison repeats her speech from the first ep to a visibly touched Xena. And to judge by her correct warning to Xena over the Persian with the crooked sword maybe she does have the gift of prophecy?
In real life the Athenians defeat the Persians and by the time the Spartans show up it's all over (thank you Greg Cox), they were delayed by their religious festivals.
We also have confirmation that Argo is female as Xena sends her away and warns her horse to avoid any amorous stallions. Unless we're talking equine subtext?;)
Needless to say how VIOLENT this ep is, Xena gleefully and viciously slaughtering the persian soldiers like you wouldn't believe. I remember watching this at work once and the audience who had always dismissed Xena as a kids show were shocked at the sheer brutality of it all.:wtf::eek:
'Forgiven' isn't so good although a nice change of pace after the serious eps before it, I like Tara and she and Gabby jealously catfighting over who get's to be Xena's 'special pal' is entertaining but the ep get's pretty tired fast, you just want Xena to put them both over her knee and then force them to kiss and make up. Or maybe that would just be too much subtext for some people?;)

I stopped worrying about "real life" and the Xenaverse long ago. There are too many centuries covered in the Xena scrolls to even try and make sense of it. ;)

As for equine subtext.... :guffaw: IIRC, the only time Argo was referred to as a "boy" was in the pilot ep, when she was trying to get him to cross the bridge where the blind cyclops was hiding.

Speaking of gifts of prophecy... is this the only time we see Gabby have a prophetic vision?

I did like the way Xena shouted at Argo to make her leave... it was as if she was saying, "If I can't make Gabrielle mind me and live... at least I'm going to make sure you do."

You know, Xena:Warrior Princess is an EXTREMELY violent show, and I tend to forget that with all the "other" stuff going on.

The only thing I had seen Lucy Lawless in, before this fall, was "BATTLESTAR GALACTICA". (Laura Roslyn Rocks!) The first time her character showed up, I had to check the credits to confirm which one Lucy was. (I knew "of" XWP, of course, but no one looked like the raven haired warrior as I watched her first BSG ep.)

After I finished Xena... I watched "Spartacus: Blood & Sand", and was REALLY shocked at the level of VIOLENCE in that one. :klingon:

Then I started this "rewatch"... good gawd. Xena was DOING pretty much what the gladiators were doing, including cutting mens throats with her chakram, beheading men and women (the goddess Discord) with her sword. :scream:

The only thing different was the amount of blood spurting from the neck. Well, that and the thickness of the material in Lucreatia's costumes vs Xena. :alienblush:

"Forgiven" is a good change of pace... but its also a show with several parts that I prefer to fast forward through. ;)
As for "too much" subtext... oh please. It isn't the subtext that I object to, its the fact that the brat is not only annoying, but IS a YOUNG teenager. Remember, this is reformed  Xena we are talking about, NOT  evil Xena.

The youtube music vids piqued my interest in the show, after we chatted about it in the Voy forum.

But I still had a problem parting with 116 dollars on a series I never watched, and dithered for over 2 months. I worried about the reviews I read on the quality of the filming process in the first year (evidently it looked grainy on one reviewer's huge plasma screen. NOT a problem on my computer screens), I worried about the quality of the stories as one proponent on the Voyager forum proclaimed the last three years a bust.

The reason I finally pulled the trigger was because of 1) those youtube commentaries and 2) watching several youtube convention Q&A's with Lucy and Renee.

I've never regretted the expense.

Oh... and although I purchased both X:WP and S:B&S at the same time, watched them nearly at the same time, and was HIGHLY impressed with Andy Whitfield et al... I handed the S:B&S off to friends as soon as I was done.

X:WP, however, stayed at home so I could rewatch it again.

Jayne, the man they call Jayne

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne

Our Jayne saw the mudders' backs breakin'
He saw the mudders' lament
And he saw the magistrate takin'
Every dollar and leavin' five cents
So he said "you can't do that to my people"
He said "you can't crush them under your heel"
So Jayne strapped on his hat
And in 5 seconds flat
Stole everythin' Boss Higgins had to steal

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne

Now here is what separates heroes
From common folk like you and I
The man they call Jayne
He turned 'round his plane
And let that money hit sky
He dropped it onto our houses
He dropped it into our yards
The man they called Jayne
He stole away our pain
And headed out for the stars

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne. :guffaw:

Episode 61 season 3 #15 "King Con"

Here's another "change of pace" episode to remind the subtexters out there that there will always be "sirens around", trying to pull Xena off her chosen path.... OR, for the antisubtexter crowd... to remind them that Xena doesn't just have eyes for short blondes. And the blondes know it.

Xena: “We gotta move fast. Rafe and I’ll get the disguises; you watch Joxer; while Eldon watches Titus. As soon as he moves to have Leo stash that ruby, and he will-- we run the first con.”
Gabrielle: “So, you and Rafe, huh? He’s not too bad, is he?”
Xena: “You mean, for someone who makes his money cheating others out of theirs? Yeah, he’s a prince.”
Gabrielle: “I didn’t say he was perfect. But you saw him with Joxer, and you have to admit, he’s smart and he’s funny. He’s handsome.”
Xena: “Arrogant and self-centered, and ”
Gabrielle: “Your typical bad boy-- just your type.”

It must be nice to have such an understanding er, friend.

Well, maybe not "too" understanding... after Gabrielle learns the two con men have a bet on whether Rafe can get Xena to fall for him.

Xena: “I thought you liked him.”
Gabrielle: “I did like him, at first. I think that your gut instinct was right.”
Xena: “What changed your mind about him, hmm?”
Gabrielle: “I don’t trust him, Xena. Like you said, he is a con man. A guy like that is always on the make.”
Xena:
“This is about that bet, isn’t it? Between Rafe and Eldon.”
Gabrielle: “You know about that?”
Xena: “Enough to assure you that Rafe knows he can’t win. My guess is he’s already called off the bet by now.”
Gabrielle: “Xena not according to Eldon. He said that Rafe doubled it.”
Xena: “Well, has it occurred to you that maybe Eldon wanted you to tell me that, so that I wouldn’t get anywhere near Rafe?”
Gabrielle: “Do you think?”

A nice enough episode about Xena protecting her family AKA Joxer. Watching poor Joxer getting beaten within an inch of his life was quite shocking for this "kid" show. I'm sure he would have enjoyed the tender loving care Gabrielle was administering to him, had he only been conscious enough to know it.

My biggest problem was I wasn't sure what they were trying to say/do with the sidestory of Xena & Rafe. Unlike (for me) the introduction of Ulysses in season 2, this fellow had no resonance with me. I was never sure if he was just playing the bet, as he suggested to his partner, or if he was really falling for our WP. And, quite honestly, the same goes for Xena. I couldn't tell if she was just playing him, to keep him in on the con, or if she was discovering after a season of trials and tribulations she just wanted to have a "diversion" (loved that "near kiss" in the back of the tavern) that wouldn't require another Rock Opera to explain away. I also wonder if the lack of resolution at the end, meant that TPTB thought perhaps they would be bringing Rafe "back in the future".

Well... we know THAT didn't happen.

I have a sneaking suspicion that after all these eps that focused exclusively on the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle, TPTB had to remind us that Xena does have a soft spot for "bad boys", simply because of the ep that's coming up "after" this one.

No youtube interviews for this one, although there is one on the dvds...

but saturn5, since you like the interviews... "here's" a fake one.

Pompey: "So, why do they call you the Warrior Princess?"
Xena: "Because 'Caesar' was taken."

:guffaw:

What a great ep. And not just because we get to see Xena in red again!

In season 2, we learned Caesar's part in creating the "Evil" Xena we came to fear.

In early season 3, we learn that Caesar can still push the buttons on our reformed Xena, to the point she neglects her responsibility to Gabrielle.

Something Gabrielle hasn't forgotten, even if Crassus wasn't reminding her of it every chance he got.

Crassus: “This isn’t about Vercinix, is it?”
Xena: “Go on, tell us.”
Crassus: “Assassination. Caesar’s blood on your blade. This is your way of getting to him.”
Gabrielle: “You’re wrong.”
Crassus: “Am I? Have you ever seen Xena around him? Her judgment gets a little impaired, and others suffer.”
Xena: “Well, I’m over that. Take him below, only be careful. He’s smart.”

I like the fact that "just" because Gabrielle has "lost her blood innocence", she still has a great deal of trouble with the concept of killing someone, either actively or as an accessory. Especially in cold blood.

Crassus is lucky she's his jailer, and yet....

Gabrielle: “And that’s assuming that I can get Crassus into the cell?”
Xena: “You have to do it. Caesar is not going through with this trade. That’s why we have to make the switch with Vercinix. By the time he discovers that it’s Crassus in the cell, it’ll be too late.”
Gabrielle: “And that’s the plan? Right? The whole plan?”
Xena: “What are you getting at?”
Gabrielle: “Look, I know you want Vercinix out. But I wanna make sure there’s not another part of this plan that you’re not telling me. You know? Like... ”
Xena: “Like assassinating Caesar.”
Gabrielle: “Yeah, like that.”
Xena: “Gabrielle, this is no time for you to have a crisis of faith. You have got to trust me. I am not going to give in to that. If this works out, the only one in danger is Crassus.”
Gabrielle:
“Crassus? You don’t mean he might be killed, do you?”
Xena: “That’s up to Caesar. Crassus is not my concern-- freeing Vercinix is.”
Gabrielle: “Yeah, but if Caesar kills Crassus-- and I put him there . Xena, uh I cannot send a man to his death.”

Xena rides away and leaves Gabrielle with Crassus, so he can weave more doubt into her psyche. The wiley General even burns his way free from his bonds, only to meet up with a very pissed off Warrior Princess at the head of the stair, who sends him careening back into the ship she's hiding him on.

That's when Xena gives Gabrielle the bad news, Crassus will likely die at the hands of Caesar tomorrow, and she has to decide if she'll help Xena or Crassus.

Xena: “Gabrielle, if I could accomplish my plan without Crassus dying, then fine. But if this means his death, so be it. We can’t think about that.”
Gabrielle: “No, I can’t avoid it. You are making me be a part of murder, and you’re being so casual about it.”
Xena: “It’s not about being casual. It’s about focus.”
Gabrielle:
“Focus on Caesar.”
Xena:
“Drop it, Gabrielle. This is about saving a good man. Crassus is a cold-blooded murderer. I’ve seen his handiwork.”
Gabrielle: “I’ll do my part.”
Xena: “Good.”

I liked how Gabrielle rationalized her part in this prisoner swap, Crassus secretly for Vercinix. I also liked how Vercinix himself convinced her of his guilt, and how that led her to reconsider her plan about leaving that identifying gold ring on Crassus. I even liked how she went to the coliseum and watched as he was brought out, and saw Caesar AND Pompey deny him before they executed him. It wasn't about vicarious bloodletting, like the rest of the crowd, it was about taking responsibility for her part in that man's death.

And, naturally, I liked the final shipboard exchange between Xena and Gabrielle on the way home. Xena slowly understanding that she's still not above pushing Gabrielle to do things she shouldn't... and Gabrielle realizing that she HAS a choice. Just not the choice she's willing to make.

Gabrielle: (Turning Crassus' ring over and over in her hands) “I don’t know what’s happening to me, Xena. I did something that I never thought I’d be able to do. I played judge, jury, and executioner.”
Xena: “You only did what I told you to.”
Gabrielle: “You said Crassus living or dying wasn’t the point. I had a choice. I made it.”
Xena:
“Gabrielle, I put you into a situation I had no right to. I expected you to understand my logic and ignore your heart.”
Gabrielle: “But I know you were right.”
Xena: “It wasn’t right for you. That’s not who you are. If, if I had to do this all over again... ”
Gabrielle: “You’d still do it.”
Xena: “If I couldn’t find another way, I would. But I wouldn’t include you.”
Gabrielle: “Yeah, but I’d be hurt if you didn’t.”
Xena: “How many more times are you gonna follow me into battle, huh? How many more times am I gonna hurt you? You are the most dear thing to me in all the world. And yet, instead of protecting you... ”
Gabrielle: “I’m here, because I want to be here. I love you, Xena.”
Xena: “I love you too, Gabrielle.”
(Crassus' Imperial ring drops from Gabrielle's hand, into the sea.)

It was so much easier, when she was just a tag a long, watching a Warrior lay waste to her enemies, and maybe, just maybe writing down the exploits on a scroll or two.

When the biggest decision you had to make was what to cook for dinner... and then whether to risk your life to bring her body home to Amphipolis, and then whether to risk the wrath of Amazons to join a "man" stealing a Warrior Princess's corpse, or whether to risk your life to face down a psychotic Warrior Princess intent on killing anyone in her path.

But there comes a time when one has to make a decision that involves someone else's life. Kill a priestess about to commit murder, kill evil incarnate with the face of a child, leave a mass murderer to face the executioner for a "crime" he didn't commit. Choices once upon a time, you never thought you'd have to face.

From "Gabrielle's Hope"

Gabrielle: "Xena, you don't understand. I, I was gonna break the cycle. I mean, all, all that pain and that violence was gonna stop with me."
Xena: (Applying temporal massage as Gabrielle lies in her lap in the stable) "Yeah, yeah. Now, I want you to get some rest, all right?"
Gabrielle: "I was gonna revere life... "
Xena: "Shh."
Gabrielle: "... bring peace, heal, it's the one thing that I never doubted, never, my role as peacemaker. And then I did, I killed and now, someone, something is making me pay. Ah, it's growing."
Xena: "Rest now. Go to sleep, Gabrielle. Rest now. Yeah. Lie down."

It was so much easier, once upon a time. :sigh:

Before I go onto the next ep... I'd love it if you reviewed the teaser for "The Debt 1".

And of course, for those without DVDs/Tapes, here's the whoosh transcript"...

(Its night. 6-8 weeks, if not more since Britannia and the Temple of Dahok. Xena turns over in her sleep, and her arm reaches out to find... nothing except an empty fur. She awakens immediately, and sits up.)
Xena: "Oh. Gabrielle?"
(Xena walks through the forest, pulling her gauntlets on as she searches for Gabrielle. She finally finds her friend sitting on a rock, leaning on her staff, looking out into the darkness)
Gabrielle: "Hmm."
Xena: (Comes to stand in front of Gabrielle) "Everything all right?"
Gabrielle: "Yeah, fine. Just thinking. Hmm. Thank you."
Xena: "For what?"
Gabrielle: "You stuck by me through everything."
Xena: "Likewise, I'm sure."
Gabrielle: "I hope I never disappoint you, Xena."
Xena: "Impossible."
Gabrielle: "I've learned that anything is possible. (Whispers) There's somebody in the shadows by the poplar tree."
Xena: (Whispers back) "I know."
Messenger: "Xena."
Xena: "I'm Xena."
Messenger: "I was sent by the weak one, who's soft as water..."
Messenger and Xena together: "... hard as the raging flood."

You mentioned not recognizing Lucy on BSG because she wasn't the raven haired beauty of Xena fame. IIRC, Lucy is actually a natural blonde!

There was a restaurant I used to frequent in the 90's, that had a large poster of XENA: Warrior Princess" on the way to the restrooms. I used to laugh everytime I saw it, because it was so incongruous (it was a "nice" restaurant, not a college dive), but THAT was who I was looking for when BSG ran their first "D'Anna Biers" ep.

A blond Xena?

You might as well told me to look for a male Xena.:guffaw:

Thank god for credits.

Or, should I say, thank the gods.

Crimeny, all three major series that woman's been on have had polytheistic religions.

Episode 63 (my numbering) season 3 # 17 "Forget me Not"

(It starts with that scene from "Maternal Instincts" that scares the hell out of me...)
Xena: “Hope? The child is Hope?”
Gabrielle: “I’m sorry. I never meant to lie. Xena, I couldn’t kill her. She’s my daughter. You’re a mother, you know this! I had to save her.”
Xena: “Maybe it’s not too late. She’s young. Poison’ll kill her if her powers aren’t mature.”
Gabrielle: “Poison? Xena, she is my child!”
Xena:
“She is not a child! She is a body, a vessel, an instrument for evil. That is all!”
(....and the flashback dream ends with the scene where Gabrielle nearly drinks the poison she just gave Hope. We then see Gabrielle wake at the base of a tree & freaking out as Joxer arrives none too gracefully.)

Gabrielle: “I can’t.”
Joxer: “What’s the matter? Huh?”
Gabrielle: “I can’t do this.”
Joxer: “OK. Uh-- then, then-- we won’t. We don’t have to. Uh, never again. What are you talking about?”
Gabrielle: “I have to go.”
Joxer: “Go? Go where? Hey, Xena told us to meet her near the temple of Mnemosyne. I don’t think it’s such a great idea to be walking around these, wait. Wait! Hey! Hey. Hey, hey, hey, Look, OK, I, I don’t know what’s up. But I know something’s wrong. Maybe I can help you.”
Gabrielle: “No one can help. It’s my memories. I can’t shake them. I, I can’t sleep. I can’t eat. It’s like I’m paying for something, but I don’t know what it is. I have to find the answer.”
Joxer: “OK, OK, OK, we’ll- we’ll, meet up with Xena later, OK?”
Gabrielle:
“Joxer, I have to do this alone. Wait here.”

And so begins the Xenalite clip show that most of us hate... except this one doesn't just show us clips of things we've seen in the past. THIS ONE shows us clips of things we NEVER saw before, and tells us things we never knew before.

In other words, sports fans, hang on to your flipping seats, because this is going to be a bumpy ride!

And you thought all was "Forgiven" after "The Bitter Suite", and after "One Against An Army".

Gabrielle and Xena came home from Rome last week, and Gabrielle carried with her just one more thing to feel guilty about. And like all guilt, it just triggered more memories of past misdeeds, past mistakes. There's a problem with forgiveness... it only works when you know what to ask forgiveness "for"... and poor Gabrielle hasn't got a clue. Its the beauty and the price of suppression.

Steven Sears, one of the Producers, is seen in several of the commentaries mentioning Gabrielle's motivations for going to Chin and confronting/betraying Xena. He's very up front about Xena's apprentice, and the fact that she's "human"... and I agree with him a hundred percent.

The only thing I don't agree with, and this is with the benefit of 6 seasons worth of hindsight... is "why" Gabrielle let her human side "show".

Gabrielle: “Mnemosyne-- goddess of memory.”
Priestess’s Voice: “You are haunted by memories-- images from your past. You want to understand why they still haunt you.”
Gabrielle: “How did you know that?”
Priestess [Walking into view]: “When you entered the temple, your memories became Mnemosyne’s, became mine. We know more about you than you know about yourself. But then, that is why you’re here, to find that part out about you that you don’t know.”
Gabrielle: “Can you help me?”
Priestess: “Perhaps..."

Priestess: “Do not confuse dreams with memories. Your memory has three rivers. To find the answer to your pain, you must cross them all. Once you find the answer, you will have to decide.”
Gabrielle: “Decide what?”
Priestess: “On whether to keep your past or forever lose it. This bowl will hold everything you know. If it is ever emptied so goes your memory. Do you understand the risk?”
Gabrielle:
“I’ve decided. I need to know.”

And so Gabrielle descends into her memories, and finds a surprising guide awaits her. Not Xena, but Ares... God of War. He warns her about the first river she must traverse, and as she wades through she is assaulted by memories of Crafstar, the Dahok Temple, the Priestess Meriden whom she killed, the warrior Baby Hope killed and... Crassus, the Roman General who most recently died by her actions. As she reached the other side of the river, we find our innocent drenched in blood from head to toe, and she's screaming.

Act 2:
The river of "Woe" is next. Ares explains helpfully how deep it is. Gabrielle decides to try to avoid the plunge by crossing on its ice crust.

Ares: “So, found a bit of an ice bridge. Good, very good.”
Gabrielle: “If I can, if I can just stay above the water, it can’t hurt me.”
Ares: “Hmm interesting. There’s an analogy here, of course, the water representing our torments, the ice, the thin layer of control we’d like to believe that we have over it.”
Gabrielle: “Shut up!”
Ares:
“But it’s a false confidence if the ice should suddenly develop a-- ”
Gabrielle: (Gabrielle falls in) “Help me.”
Ares: “Not my job, my dear. Well, not yet, anyway.”
(And the memories of 6 separate events from "The Debts" fly through Gabrielle's mind...including one, strangely enough, that we didn't know Gabrielle had heard of... Xena's memory of flying with Lao Ma.)

(Ares laughs as she pulls herself out of the frigid river, he takes pity and creates for her a fire.)
Gabrielle: “I can’t continue. I-it’s too much.”
Ares: “That’s the spirit. Let it go! I mean, what does it
matter? Pain is just nature’s way of saying, ‘Hey! You’re
alive.’ Accept it. Who needs it?”
Gabrielle: (Suddenly, she gains an insight!) “I can go back. I have the answer.”
Ares: “Do you, now?”
Gabrielle: “Yes. I thought that I’d never come to terms with my mistakes. But I did, when I visited Xena in Ming T’ien’s prison.”

Ahhh, Gabrielle. The priestess TOLD you to find the truth you needed to cross all three rivers. Why on Earth did you think you could get home by going Back across that river of woe? Wishful thinking... or just fear of what else you'd remember?

The river of woe seals itself over gabrielle and nearly drowns her as she tried unsuccessfully to backtrack.

Gabrielle: [Screams]
Ares:
“Whoops I guess you were wrong. Nice try, though.”
Gabrielle: [Shivering] “You said you’d save me.”
Ares: “No, no. What I said was, ‘I would be here to save
you and I am.”
Gabrielle: “I can’t go back. I can’t go forward. I don’t know what to do.”
Ares: “Well seems to me the answer’s obvious. You could stay here for all eternity or, death. Just tryin’ to help.”

Ares has gone on ahead, and after awhile Gabrielle has finally screwed her courage up enough to follow him to that third river.

Ares: “What she (The Priestess) told you means nothing. If you survive, the answer might be there. Is it all worth it? Is the quest for knowledge worth all this pain?”
Gabrielle: “Yes. It has to be. Otherwise, what’s the point of living?”
Ares: “Point, there is no point to living. Don’t you get it, Gabrielle? Maybe, that’s the source of all your pain-- all you’ve been through with Xena, all she’s put you through.
Maybe, you finally realized it all adds up to a big, fat zero.”

Gabrielle disputes his callous view, and recalls her visit to Illusia with Xena, and we hear the Hate is the Star chorus, followed by Xena & Gabrielle's reawakening "I never dreamed"... until we saw the quartet of evil, along with the mutual hating Gabrielle and Xena explode before their mutual love.

Gabrielle: (Smiles on the banks of the third river) “It was worth it.”
Ares: “Then why are you still here? Answer me.”
Gabrielle: (Answers him by wading into the final river, between its islands of fire) “Uh! Uh!”

Suddenly, the memories rise up...

[Xena: “Gabrielle, I am catching a ship here that will carry
me close to the kingdom of Ch’in. If there was ever a time to turn back, it’s now.(Gabrielle's face says it all, as Xena kisses the top of her head) I understand.”
Gabrielle: (Gabrielle doesn't understand) “You owe someone so much, that you would just throw away these last few years.”
Xena: (Face resolute, even though her heart is breaking) “Yes.” ]

Gabrielle: [Screaming in the middle of the river.] “You!” [Screams anew as she sees Ares on the dock where Xena said goodbye] “Noooooooo! Noooooooooo! Nooooooooo!” [Screams over and over again]

[ACT IV]

Gabrielle: [Screams as the flames engulf her] [Screams as she pulls herself out of the river] [Screams as she lays on the ground, burning]
Ares: “Yes now you know. But your strength is gone. The truth you looked for it’s done you no good.”
Gabrielle:
“You’re wrong! Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! (And each exclamation blows the flames away and reclothes her in the white gown of the acolyte) You aren’t Ares. You aren’t a god! You’re from within me. You’re that part of me who wants to hide the truth.”
Ares: “Call me what you will, your guilt your denial. You can’t defeat me. You’ll only die trying.”
[Gabrielle reaches out her hand, and her fighting staff appears at will. A Fight ensues with Ares]
Gabrielle: “That’s why you’re here as Ares.”
Ares: “Yeah, Ares is the key. But he’s only half the answer.”
Gabrielle: “I know, it’s because of what I did. It’s because of why I did it.”

(The "clip" that never was... on the dock where Xena left Gabrielle behind)

[Ares: “Well-- there she goes without you. Kind of makes you feel second best, doesn’t it?”
Gabrielle: “Leave me alone, Ares. Xena has her own decisions to make.”
Ares: “Really? Sounds more like an obligation to me. Yeah Lao Ma must be important, all right. Xena would never do anything like this for you. Funny, isn’t it? You give up your family, your home, your blood innocence, your daughter, all because of Xena. And yet it’s like nothing compared to the debt she owes this woman. Of course, you could always stop her.”
Gabrielle: “I could never get to Ch’in fast enough. Xena’s sure to take the fastest route.”
Ares: “Hmm. That is true. You’re only mortal, after all.”
Gabrielle: “You could do it. You could get me there ahead of her.”
Ares: “Is that what you want? ‘Cause you have to ask me that is, if it doesn’t bother you owing a favor to the god of war.”
Gabrielle:
“Send me there, I’m asking.”
Ares: “To prevent a murder, for the sake of friendship.”
Gabrielle: “Yeah-- for friendship.” :scream: ]

For Friendship. :wtf:

Remember when these clip shows had no real impact on the overall storyline of our Xenaverse? I mean really, what can you expect from a show that will only have 3 minutes of new Lucy Lawless scenes in it?

[Fight continues between Ares and Gabrielle]

Gabrielle: “I wanted to get there before Xena so that I could betray her. I wanted to betray her. I gave her everything and it meant nothing to her. I hated her for loving someone else. I wanted her to hurt! I wanted her to be punished! And I almost got her killed. Why my hatred and jealousy almost destroyed my best friend.”

And this is where I will respectively disagree with Mr Sears, one of the producers and writers of this series (although not credited with this ep).

He talked in the interviews about how Gabrielle came to believe her own publicity, that after 2 years of hearing Xena say what a good friend she was... she couldn't believe there ever was someone else, or someone who could trump Gabrielle in Xena's life.

What I think happened, goes back to that teaser for The Debt part 1,

Hmm. Thank you."

and can be summed up in one word.

Its just not a word they ever let themselves use, much less allude to until the finale.

"Afterglow"

I think sometime that night, before the messenger came to Xena, a line was crossed in their relationship. A line was crossed, and for Gabrielle a promise was assumed.

But before she could even allow the "afterglow" to burn itself out naturally, Xena was leaving.

Leaving Gabrielle even faster than Perdicus had after they had married last year.

At least he had an excuse. Callisto killed him.

Xena had a choice... and she chose someone else.

Ares: “So-- now you have the answer. The question is can you live with it? Drink. Empty the bowl.”
Gabrielle: “If the bowl is ever emptied, so go my memories.”
Ares: “And the pain-- all that pain.”
Gabrielle: “And the memories of my youth my parents my loves.”
Ares:
“The betrayal-- the killing-- the death of your child.”
Gabrielle: “And Xena.”
Ares:
“Bottom line, Gabrielle, you won’t miss what you never knew.”

Gabrielle: “Joxer.”
Joxer: “Jerkst-- hey! Ahh!”
Gabrielle: “I have never-- nor will I ever-- dance in the nude in the rain with you anywhere near me.”
Joxer: “Gaby-- you’re back! Ahhh! Ow. Oh.”
Xena: “Yes, she is.”
Joxer: “Oh. Ah-ahh. Ow. Oh-oh. Oh!”
Gabrielle: “Xena-- you knew all along. That’s why-- you wanted me to wait at the temple of Mnemosyne, right?”
Xena: “I wondered how you made it to Ch’in ahead of me. I figured Ares might have a hand in it, but what I couldn’t understand was why? Nightmares can tell you a lotta things. Thank the gods, you talk in your sleep. I knew this was one journey you had to make without me. I’m just glad you made it back.”
Gabrielle: “If I didn’t have the painful memories, then I wouldn’t know what the good ones were like, right? I, I just couldn’t let it go, Xena, no matter what the pain. I’m sorry.”
Xena: “No, no, it’s over. Welcome home.”

Well, that's how I resolved it.
