Any Xena:WP fans on the boards?

Episode 45, season 2 #21 "The Lost Mariner".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecrops_I

Okay, after the marathon review of the last ep... lets try to make this one shorter.

First... I thought Gabrielle "seasick" was brilliant the first time around in "Ulysses"... but Gabrielle with numb tastebuds beats it HANDS DOWN!

Xena: “Athena wouldn’t have given him immortality if there wasn’t an answer. Any way, we’ve got a lot of time to figure it out.”
Gabrielle: “Hah-hah. No, we don’t! Because I will not live through a lifetime of this!”
Xena: “Here-- see that small bump?”
Gabrielle: “Mm-hmm. Ouch! My seasickness!”
Xena: “Every time you feel your stomach getting queasy, jab your wrist like I showed ya.”
Gabrielle: [Screams and starts jabbing the wrist repeatedly as a crewman brings her raw fish to eat.]
Altrech: “I brought you some squid.”

One of the striking things about this ep, was how long TPTB kept the two main characters apart. We heard them but never saw them together in the teaser, as the ship they were sailing on was driven upon the rocks and sank.

Gabs is rescued by Cecrops during the teaser, the mariner cursed for the last 300 years to never set foot upon land again. She quickly learns she's not condemned to be on board for eternity too... just until she dies. Xena, however, doesn't show up on board until the beginning of act 2.

There are some great scenes where she's warning Cecrops how she and boats don't mix. (Makes one wonder why she got onboard the merchant ship in the first place, doesn't it?) And again in bonding over appreciation of beauty.

Even better, are the scenes where she's trying to get Cecrops to let her off at shore (before she realized who he is) and where Cecrops pronounces Xena the lucky one, for NOT ending up on his ship even IF she drowned.

What I like about those initial scenes on board, is Gabrielle's utter faith that Xena survived the sinking of their vessel, and that she would rescue her from Cecrops' curse.

(In Cecrops's cabin)
Cecrops:
“Poseidon’s curse was that I could never return to land until 'love redeems me'.”
Gabrielle:
“But, that was so long ago.”
Cecrops: “300 years ago. Athena decided to give me immortality. I can’t die, and I can’t return to land. It’s a toss-up between who I hate more-- Poseidon or Athena.”
Gabrielle: “But Athena gave you hope. Don’t you see that? She knew how powerful love was, she gave you enough time to defeat the curse-- until love redeems you. That has to be the key.”
Cecrops: “Oh, please. Who’s going to love me? I mean, I’m hardly the catch of the day-- tall, dark, and-- cursed for eternity. Yeah-- quite a draw. With the exception of you, there hasn’t been a woman onboard this ship for-- 200 years-- and she had an attitude because I sank her ship.”
Altrech: “You got something out here you gotta see.” (He bows Gabrielle's way out of the cabin.)
Gabrielle: “Thank you.”
---
Hidsim: (On the deck of Cecrops' ship, he notices a crew member getting too friendly with Gabrielle, and warns him off) Altrech! (Then points out the entertainment going on the beach) Over there.”
[Sees Xena flipping and fighting the pirates on the beach.]
Gabrielle:
“Xena. Xena! I’m here!”
---
Basculis the pirate: (Chasing Xena on shore) “Come on!”
---
Cecrops: “Think about what you’re doing, girl. If you care about your friend, you don’t want her aboard my ship.”
---
Xena: (On shore, racing after the ship of Cecrops) “Gabrielle!”

An interesting epsiode, when you remember the one that came before. In "The Price" they were "together" in one place for the entire ep, and yet never so separated as they were when at odds over Xena's transformation over the "Horde".

Interesting, when you realize, at the end of "The Price"... Xena still hasn't told Gabrielle she is loved, but has told Gabrielle what she does love...

Xena: ...You understand hatred, but you have never given into it. You don’t know how much I love... that.

Again, I have come to embrace the highly improbable things Xena does, whether its catching a battle axe with her whip, and flicking it back into the chest of its owner (THe Price) or using her Chakram to cut the rope holding up Cecrops' sail, or whether its leaping from a (springboard")branch of a very tall tree to flip end over end until she lands against the rigging of Cecrops' ship.

Gabrielle is such a fan girl, laughing along with me as we watch this amazing feat of derring do!

Loved it when she swung on the rope to capture her chakram embedded in the mast, and then landed on the deck next to Gabrielle. Although Gabrielle is no longer frightened of Cecrops, and can only think of hugging her rescuer, Xena is trying desperately to keep her eyes on the tall brooding man who has cursed them both.

Xena: “Hah! Got’cha.”(Pulls chakram from the mast and drops to deck)
Men: [Cheer]
Gabrielle:
“Xena-- oh Xena.”
Cecrops: “Are you out of your mind?!”
Xena:
“Gabrielle, are you all right?”
Gabrielle: “Yeah, I’m fine. I’m...seasick. I’m cursed. Actually, I’m really seasick.”
Cecrops: “Excuse me. Do you know who I am?”
Xena: (Of COURSE she does!) “You’re Cecrops. I wasn’t gonna let you take off with my best friend.”

And in case no-one has said it in at least two episodes... Xena has MANY skills. Being able to decipher curses about love and the Olympian Gods just happens to be one of them.

Xena: “Seems to me like you’ve given everything to Poseidon-- including hope. When did you give that up?”
Cecrops: “Oh-- we have a Warrior Philosopher on board-- a regular Sinteres. It was three days before the summer solstice-- 27 years after Poseidon had cursed me. That’s when I gave up hope. That’s when.”
Xena: “What was her name?”
Cecrops: “Terai. I loved her as no man has ever loved a woman. Whenever she looked at me, her face lit up with the faith that she had in me. She had hair the color of the midnight sun-- skin as soft as silk-- and eyes so green and deep, you could fall into them. And I did.”
Xena: “I’m sorry.”
Cecrops: “I was on my way to see Terai when-- Poseidon arose from the waters. He cursed me at that moment. Terai was watching from the shores. Then Poseidon created Charybdis, the mighty whirlpool, as a reminder. For many years, I stayed in the area, sailing the coastline. And every evening-- Terai would come to the cliffs, and we would-- look at each other. Even as she grew older-- she grew more beautiful. And then, one evening-- she didn’t come and-- and I knew-- I knew I would never see her again.”
Xena: “Turn east. Let’s go back to Terai’s village.”
Cecrops: “That was 300 years ago. Terai is dead-- dead. The village couldn’t exist with Charybdis just outside the shore. It’s gone-- all gone.”
Xena: “The whirlpool is still there. Poseidon created it. It might just be part of the answer. Athena knew what she was doing. You just have to have faith.”
Cecrops: “Faith?! Faith has killed more people than war!”
Xena: “You said that Terai had faith in you. So either you were lying to her then, or you’re lying to yourself now.

Poseidon, who makes such a big splash in the credits every week, appears for the second time in this season/series.

Xena: “What do you want, Poseidon?! Haven’t you done your damage here, already?!”
Poseidon: “Xena! This is between Cecrops and me!”
Gabrielle: “Excuse me! But we don’t have a choice!”
Cecrops: “You made the rules, Poseidon!”
Poseidon: “Very well. Xena, I grant you safe passsage from the ship of Cecrops. Go.”
Xena: “Not without Gabrielle.”
Poseidon: “Take her. Love can’t redeem Cecrops. He doesn’t even know where to look.”
Xena:
(Xena looks suspiciously at Cecrops before making a fateful decision.) “Thanks for the offer, Poseidon, but, we like the smell of the ocean!”
Cecrops: “Don’t be a fool!”
Man’s Voice: “Is she crazy?”
Xena: “I think we’ll stay on a little while longer!”
Poseidon: “You won’t get a second chance! (Sinister God laughter)

I guess when the original show aired, there was a slight controversy that Xena turned down Posiedon's offer without consulting Gabrielle first.

Well, I don't think their relationship suffered because of it.

First, she was no longer seasick.

Second, Xena was the one who jumped aboard the cursed ship, and she should be the one to decide when she jumps off.

Third, Gabrielle's moral compass would not have allowed her to desert those men if Xena thought she could do something to save them.

Hidsim: “Warrior Princess? The men...They... they talked about you. We... we wonder if you’re gonna defeat Poseidon’s curse again.”
Xena: “Well, that’s the plan. (To Gabrielle) How’re you doing?”
Gabrielle: “Good. This sailor stuff is kind of fun once you know about this, (Tapping the pressure point in her wrist) huh?”
Xena: “Let’s hope it doesn’t get any worse. Poseidon obviously doesn’t want us reaching Charybdis.”
Gabrielle: “That means you were right. The key must be there, and he doesn’t want you to figure it out.”
Xena: “And if I’m wrong?”
Gabrielle: “If you’re wrong? Xena, I have to spend the rest of my life dodging-- Altrech! A 60 year old adolescent, who hasn’t had a girlfriend since his voice was an octave higher. :guffaw:

One of the things I really like about this ep, is how many of the things in it have their corollary in Xena and Gabrielle's own story. Our Warrior Pyschoanalyst can see these patterns in Cecrops' life, and she draws certain "spot on" conclusions.

Cecrops: “You don’t think-- that I would end this curse in a second, if I could.”
Xena: “No-- because it’s gone on too long. Thousands of people have been cursed along with you. And you feel the guilt of dooming all those people.”
Cecrops: “Shouldn’t I? For the first hundred years, it was merchant vessels-- innocents. These people spent the rest of their lives, on this ship because of me! So I switched to pirates. No innocents there-- like the people I have on this ship, now-- all pirates!”
Xena: “And all become your friends. This isn’t a curse to you-- it’s justice. You’ve begun to believe that you deserve it!”
Cecrops: “How in the name of Zeus, did you ever come up with such a lame theory?”
Xena: “By watching you. I’ve known many types of fear in my life, Cecrops. But the fear of your own guilt is distinctive.”
Cecrops: “What do you know of fear?! Do you fear death?! Do you fear injury?! Do you fear losing your friend out there? Well, I fear life, because every day of life means another day someone can lose their freedom to me!”
Xena: “Then break the cycle, Cecrops. You didn’t start this Poseidon did...but you can end it!”
Cecrops: “How? Were you planning on falling in love with me? I mean-- that is the answer, isn’t it?” Wait! You and Gabrielle had your shot at freedom. Why did you stay?”
Xena:
“Because I’m not leaving this ship without everyone else.”
Cecrops: “Oh, right-- it’s as simple as that, ay?”
Xena: “Yeah, it’s as simple as that.”

And here Xena is being totally honest. The Warrior Princess will do anything, right any wrong, in an attempt to atone for all the evil she's done in the past.

With Lao Ma's and Hercules' and ultimately Gabrielle's help, SHE broke the cycle for herself. Now she reaches out to another lost soul, and is trying to bring him home.

The ship is on the edge of the whirlpool, Xena is in the crow's nest trying to guide the pilot away from the deathpool. Poseidon thinks he's bribed Cecrops to give him Xena.

Xena: “My sword!” (Sword drops, and Xena gets entangled in the lines to the sail.)
Poseidon: “Now, Cecrops! Give me the Warrior Princess! Cut the rope! Do it! And you’ll go free!”
Cecrops: “Xena! No, Poseidon! Love redeems me! I finally figured it out, you bastard!”
Poseidon: [Yells]
Xena: [Laughs, then war yell as she jumps from the crows nest to land on the violently pitching deck]
Cecrops:
“ It isn’t that-- someone loves me! It’s my love for others! The love you had for Gabrielle, Xena! When you risked your life for her! The love Hidsim had for me, when he died! You’re right! It really is... just that simple! Thank you! Thank you!” (He leaps from the ship into the whirlpool)
Xena: “Cecrops! No!”
Cecrops: [Screams]
Gabrielle:
“Cecrops!”

Well, its the end of episode 45, and although Xena STILL hasn't "told" Gabrielle she loves her, its pretty darned obvious to the cursed man who never realized until Xena pointed it out how much he loved the men in his crew.

I don't know what I liked more, watching Xena go all gaga over Draco, or watching Gabrielle try to figure out WHY Xena was going all gaga over Draco!

Oh, right, then there was THIS exchange before either were hit by Baby Bliss' arrows... as funny as their words are... their faces are priceless!

Gabrielle: “It’s amazing, isn’t it?”
Xena: “Not really. Draco’s as smart as they come. He wouldn’t go after the Hestian virgins without scouting the place first.”
Gabrielle: “No, it’s the virgins I’m talking about. Think of the faith it takes to be one of them.”
Xena: “Yeah, not to mention the other requirement.”
Gabrielle: “Just between you and me, being chaste can be
real hard.
Xena: “Chaste?”
Gabrielle: “Hmm.”
Xena: “No, I was talking about having to answer to that stupid bell your whole life.”
Gabrielle: “That too-...yeah.”

Gabby, you walked right into that one!

As for walking right into something... Draco had no idea he was about to be put into a Xena liplock when he rode into town, due to an unfortunatel arrow from babybliss right into a certain Warrior Princess.

I can't tell what I liked more, watching Xena liplock Draco, watching Joxer looking so shocked, watching Draco trying to divine what she was up to, or watching Gabrielle's expression during all of the above.

Finally, as the love making turned to sword dueling ended and Draco rides away, Gabrielle decides its time for a heart to heart with her mentor.

Xena: “Ah.”
Gabrielle:We have to talk.”
Xena: “Huh? Oh, yeah.”
---
Gabrielle: “What’s wrong with you?
Xena: (hitting a puinching bag over and over...) “Nothing that a good workout won’t cure.”
Joxer: “Hey, uh-- try the lake. A cold swim usually helps. Hah-hah-hah-hah-- so I’ve been, uh-- told.”
Gabrielle:You’re hot for Draco?”
Xena:
“Aw, don’t be ridiculous.”
Gabrielle: “That’s a relief.”
Xena: “I’m merely responding to that-- dark part of me that has a weakness for bad boys.”
Gabrielle: “Xena-- Xena, this is crazy. We can not stop Draco if you’re so...worked up over him.”

She has a point, Xena. :bolian:

This ep really drips with sensuality, as Draco exits his bath only to find Xena lounging on his couch, finishing off a banana. (Can we say Oh my!)

Of course, it has nothing over Xena's picnic with Draco, from arm wrestling to "deep massage" until Xena comes nearly to her senses and runs to take Joxer's advice. She hops into the nearest lake and stays there until Gabby arrives.

Speaking of Gabby, that scene where Xena is untying her and Joxer just as Baby Bliss returns to shoot Gabby was precious. Gabrielle looks left, then looks right, trying to find her friend, and JOXER steps into view.

As much as one would like to blame Gabrielle for not correctly diagnosing Xena when she fell for Draco, I think the one person we should "blame" was Joxer for not realizing how improbable was this obsession Gabrielle now had for him.

Well, how can we blame someone when all his dreams have finally come true?

At least Xena was able to stay true to her mission and save the Hestian Virgins, and Gabrielle at the same time fro the warlord Draco.

Loved the part when Draco fell for Gabrielle, and Xena tried to warn him off ...

Xena: “Wait a minute. Something’s going on, here. You-- you can’t want Gabrielle. Between you and me, she’s a little..." (Xena does hand gestures best left to one's imagination)
Draco: “I know what I want-- and she’s it.

After the last episode where Cecrops acknowledges that Xena loves Gabrielle... this exchange between Draco and Xena is very interesting.

The warlord has come back to the temple for the Virgins and for Gabrielle.

Dena: “Xena! A truce! We need to talk!”
Xena: “So talk.”
Draco: “I had the score of a decade. Then you show up, and not only wreck it, but you make me look bad in front of my woman.”
Xena: “Well, ain’t love a bitch?!”
Draco:
“Wait! Give me the girls and Gabrielle-...or I will torch the place and everyone inside it.”
Xena: “You would kill the woman you love?”
Draco: “The question is... would you? [Laughs] No, that code of honor you cleave to wouldn’t let you watch ‘em burn. So we can do this the hard way or not. Your call.”
Xena: “Gabrielle’s not the woman for you, Draco. I am. And I’ll prove it to you. Those virgins-- you want ‘em? Take them. They’re yours.”

I like it when even the comedies have a wonderful lesson in them.

Xena: “These feelings that we’re having-- hmm, gods know, they seem real, but-- but they’re not. If I’m right, they’re from Cupid’s arrows.”
Draco:
“You’d say anything to win me, wouldn’t you?”
Xena: “No, but this happens to be true. Think about it.”
Draco: “I don’t need to think about it. I _know_ how I feel. And Iwon’t stop until I make Gabrielle feel the same way for me.” So, give it up Xena! Stop trying to change me!”
Xena: “You’re right. You can’t change the one you love. So, wise up. Gabrielle could never love someone who lives off hurting others. You can’t change her. So, if you want to win her love, you better change yourself.”

Something that Xena's learned to do over the last two years, under the bard's influence.

Of course, Xena being Xena not only discerned the cause of the love making, but its cure. Joxer arrived just in time with Cupid himself (Karl Urban looks good in that outfit. ) to put things to right. Had he only known the consequences, I doubt he would have found Cupid "sooo" quickly.

Final campfire scene with Joxer sitting next to Gabrielle, and Xena walking about in the background.

Gabrielle: “I never knew love could be so exhausting.”
Xena: “Yeah, but, worth the work.”
Gabrielle: “Xena-- do I hear-- a touch of romance in your voice?”
Xena: “Not if I hear a touch of the ‘I told you so’ in yours.
Besides, these weren’t exactly normal circumstances.”
Gabrielle: “Yeah, I’ll say. [Laughs and clocks Joxer on the shoulder] Can you imagine the two of us in love?”
Joxer: [He looks into the fire and gives a hald hearted chuckle] “Ridiculous”
Gabrielle: “Yeah-- [she stands up to walk away, patting him on the left shoulder as she goes] kind of makes you laugh just to think about it.”
Joxer: [Quietly, almost to himself] “Hah-hah.”
Xena: [Comes up beside Joxer and lays a comforting hand on his right shoulder. As he looks back and up to her, she gives him a knowing look, and he manages NOT to cry before she walks away.]

Well, its been 46 episodes, and Joxer has come closer to speaking his true feelings for Gabrielle than Xena. Then again, according to the writer for this ep, TPTB were planning to put the subtext tomfoolery to bed (so to speak) after this, so why bother?

01-31-99. Chris Manheim was interviewed by WHOOSH in the February 1999 issue.
RUDNICK:
[94] Now A COMEDY OF EROS (46/222) that came next, had one of the strongest moments for the Joxer character. Joxer brings up a lot of emotions in people. They seem to really like him or really dislike him.
MANHEIM:
[95] [smiles] That's what I understand.
RUDNICK:
[96] For me, I kinda like him. Depending on what he's in, sometimes I *really* like him. In this episode he came off as a very strong character.
MANHEIM:
[97] It's that ending that helps. It gives him a depth that, up until that point, he hadn't really displayed. If I did anything good, it was the ending. [laughs]
RUDNICK:
[98] One of my favorite lines in the series is his "Ha ha" at the very end, where he's very emotional. That was a very fine moment for him, I thought.
MANHEIM:
[99] He did a lovely job, he didn't do too much. That's my big fear. It takes a deft kind of touch so that you don't get maudlin over it but you make your point. He did a lovely job. Everybody did. They had a good time doing it. I know Lucy really likes Jay, the actor playing Draco. They're very comfortable with each other. All of that worked just great. It's a personal favorite. Even the double entendres and things came off.
RUDNICK:
[100] I was going to say, again, you get handed all the subtext stuff. You get that near miss between Xena and Gabrielle with Cupid's arrow...
MANHEIM
:
[101] [laughs] Yeah. A lot of fun to do. We kind of backpedaled a lot on all that [subtext]. I don't know whether it's getting read in no matter what we write, but I think we've said "Ah, we've had our run at that," and just concentrate on other aspects of their relationship. Whatever people read into it they do.
RUDNICK:
[102] It would be fair to say on a conscious level you're not placing it in there as much as you once were, but whatever happens to shine through is okay.
MANHEIM:
[103] Exactly. You can only do that so much before it gets to be old hat and kind of tired. I think as long as we concentrate on the relationship, whatever that involves, however people choose to interpret it, that's perfectly up to them.
RUDNICK:
[104] At the very least, Xena and Gabrielle's relationship is one of intense friendship and wherever you want to go with that is up to you. MANHEIM:
[105] Exactly.

Well, I guess its "my fault" for reading too much into "everything" for the next 4 seasons.

Episode 47 (Woo Hoo, A "Star Trek" number! :techman:)

Season 3 #1 "THE FURIES"

Someone was nice enough to intercut the two commentaries from RJ Stewart and Tapert/Friedman into one.

What a lady. Even though her husband "outed" her disagreements with the director of this ep... in her brief interview there's no hint of it.

From the end... after Xena "defeats" Ares...

Ares: (To Xena) "...You don't really think I'm your father, do you?"
Xena: "It doesn't matter. The Furies think you are. That's all that counts."
Ares: [Claps] "That-- was brilliant. If I was your father, I'd be very-- very proud of you. (To Gabrielle) I still don't get what you see in her."

I wasn't sure about this ep the first time through because of my prejudice against... (yes, I'm a female stereotype) the three stooges. But as it went on, I sat up and took notice. The most impressive thing, however, besides Xena's tactical mind working overtime even when she's insane, was Gabrielle's role. She really came through for her friend in more ways than one.

"BY THE GODS, XENA!"

Her cry when Xena nearly decapitated her while in a crazed delusion was just as impressive as Xena's quiet admission when Gabrielle stopped her from burning that village to the ground...

"Im in trouble, aren't I, Gabrielle?"

The other thing I love about this ep is Cyrene... Xena's Mom. What an amazing support for Xena, one that she was drawn towards even when she knew nothing else.

Cyrene: "Gabrielle-- do you think that Xena-- even in this state-- could kill her mother?"
Gabrielle: "What?"
Cyrene: "I killed Xena's father

I didn't see that coming.

Fav line in the show? Oh... too many to really choose from, but I am partial to this line between Cyrene and Xena, when Xena plans to go off and "kill" herself.

"Im a lunatic with lethal combat skills."

Well... is he or isn't he?

I think Ares is a god and that Xena was a full mortal. I agree with the producers who preferred the idea that Xena is totally mortal and that all she achieved was because of hard work, desire and familial love, not because she was born of immortal sperm.

Cyrene: "Xena-- your father."
Gabrielle: "Um-- I'll collect some more firewood."
Cyrene: "I took him away from you."
Xena: "Mother."
Cyrene: "It seemed-- like the only way."
Xena: "I'm sure it was. I never really knew him. I-- the hardest thing for me was giving up the hope."
Cyrene: "Hope."
Xena: "I kept hoping that maybe I'd run into him, somewhere. Understand-- understand myself. I know that will never be."
Cyrene: "Can you ever forgive me?"
Xena: "There is nothing to forgive. You saved my life. I owe you my thanks. I'm sorry that you had to carry this alone all these years. We'll go on. We'll be stronger than before."

I think its Forbin's fault.

Although I can't discount Saturn5's influence either.

But the more I think about Gabrielle in this last ep... "The Furies"... the more my jaw drops and I go "whoa". :techman:

Think about it. In six years of adventures, who must have been the most formidable opponent for Gabrielle to go up against?

The Horde?

Velasca?

Callisto?

Mavikan?

Ares?

No way.

Hands down it has to be an insane Xena, who only sees Callisto when she sees you and is trying to kill you.

I talked about how good it was to see Gabrielle say NO! to Xena over and over in "The Price".

Here, we see her do more than just say "no", we really see her take charge of Xena from the get go.

Interviewing the bounty hunter, searching for a naked Xena wandering in the night forest, forcing Xena to go to the Temple of the Furies, chasing an armed Xena (and catching up with her quicker than in season 2's "Execution") through the forest after she's lost all connection with reality, manages to escape from the tree Xena tied her to (quite thoughtful of Xena, when you consider it the alternative) and track her to Cyrene's in Amphipolis.

She tracks Orestes down and realizes her friend is damned whether she kills her Mother or not, and gets back to Xena and the Temple before Xena can commit murder.

Now that's one kickass partner.

I think Xena must have been happy in that moment that she didn't send that "girl" back to Potaedia that first day.

I had a week off between Xmas and New Year. My project was to stop wishing there was a Callisto/Hope saga boxed set and make my own. Going back to that list I posted, I ripped the episodes, put them on 10 DVDs (2 eps per), made some nice labels...

I guess I have to wait for another week off to have the marathon, though.

^^ Renee was in her glory.

DVD interview; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CM4D8IEoSF0&feature=related

One of my fav scenes is Joxer at the side of the abyss tossing in flowers for Gabrielle, and Xena coming up from the lava pit, grabbing his arm. "She's ALIVE!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZrD5nLU6Qc

Forbin, as an unabashed Gabby fan, I suspect this next ep on my review cycle is right up your alley. :bolian:

Love that scene too although for different reasons, anyone else ship Xexer?

The Price- very good, Xena does The Alamo. As you point out it's so strange to see her genuinely afraid. Interesting to compare this to Firefly's Reavers, even big tough Jayne afraid of them

Lost Mariner-good ep and good performance from Tony Todd, genuine mythical figure who did indeed tick off Poesidon.

Comedy of Eros-funny ep and the one for Gaxers. My favourite exchange is Gabby and Draco;
Gabby; (trying to distract him) "Oh look cherries, I love cherries"
Draco; (leeringly) "So do I!"
Gabby (flustered) "Did I mention I was a widow?"
Draco; "Saves me the trouble of killing your husband"

Furies-very popular on TV at the time also turning up on Angel and Charmed, Piper even becomes one for a little while. It will probably never be decided but I always believed Ares is Xena's dad, how else could a mortal woman fight off gods and defeat demi-gods? (barring the 'Xena and Callisto are that generation's Slayers fan theory'). Of course this brings an incestuous subtext to it all but the greek gods were like that, Zeus and Hera are brother and sister, Aphrodite and Ares have a fling and even this series implies that he's having an affair with his niece Discord. And of course Xena had sex with her uncle, Hercules:eek::wtf:
Another highlight is the Xena/Cyrene relationship and I do love Lucy's mad act, it's great, Evil Dead meets the three Stooges

:wtf:

I take it you mean "shack up" in the "2 warrior chums camping around the same fire" sense ... and not necessarily anything more.... robust?

;)

To quote the lady herself, in "A Comedy of Eros"....

Xena: “Gabrielle, what’s going on? You barely tolerate Joxer.”
Gabrielle: “Yeah? That was before.”
X:ena “Before what?”
Gabrielle: “Before I realized-- I love him!”
Xena: “What?”
Gabrielle:
“I know. It shocked me too-- seeing how blind I’ve been. But, maybe that’s what love is-- it’s blind. I should write that down.”
Xena: “No, Gabrielle, this is crazy. You can’t be in love with Joxer. He’s-- well, he’s Joxer!”

This vid isn't comedic... but the dissonance between the music and the pictures is striking enough to be appreciated. Given what's in the offing, after "BTDT" it is appropriate.

Episode 48 season 3 #2 "Been There, Done That."

Do you remember that interview I posted in the review of the season 2's finale with writer/producer Chris Manheim? Remember the part where she said they weren't going to push the subtext thing anymore because it was getting "tired".

I don't think she sent that memo to Lucy and Renee.

Loved Ted's comments about how blissfully ignorant Joxer was 3:34 re: Xena and Gabrielle's "relationship", and who came up with the hickey line. I DO have to defend our Warrior Princess and her actions regarding the THIRD death of Joxer in this ep.

But I digress.

Isn't it amazing, how the dramas usually start with a few minutes of comedy (i.e.: "The Price" with its story of the girls fishing on the riverbank) but the comedies do just the opposite. In this comedy, the teaser just tore your heart out, with Joxer dying in Gabrielle's arms (I can hear half the bbs wishing they were in HIS place at that moment.) and Gabrielle being heart broken watching yet another funeral pyre burn. Poor thing, losing a friend like that less than a year after Perdicus' death.

I did raise my eyebrows at the sight of Gabrielle and Xena lying down together... but mostly because I wondered "Isn't sleeping in your armor uncomfortable?" Then again, I noticed poor Argo was still saddled, and figured the Warrior Princess was being careful, given their proximity to a town full of angry Menos/Lycos families who'd just as soon kill a stranger as not.

As for the subtexters among the fan community, that was a very sweet scene that could easily be seen two ways... and I'll let you judge it for yourself.

:mallory:

But the tease wasn't Xena and Gabby lying down together. The tease was Xena waking up "alone", without her armor, BACK in that barn.

RISE AND SHINE everybody! RISE AND SHINE!

In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that I'm willing to watch "Groundhog Day" whenever I find it on the tube, and that will never change!

This was an excellent homage/rip off of that great film, and I am in awe that the writers did as well as they did with their own storyline.

I do wonder why SINBAD of all heroes would have been higher on Miron's list than Xena... but that line was probably there just to bring her ego down to earth. ;)

My fav lines this "week"... both belong to Joxer.

"Is that a hickey?" (explained away in this last video between 8:47 and 9:07)

and

"Maybe its the rooster." :guffaw:

Joxer not only had the best lines, he has the dubious distinction of dying the most in this ep. He croaked 3 times, Gabby bit the dust twice, Argo once and even Xena herself left the mortal coil once.

Which brings me back to that previous thought I had when I was "digressing"...
I DO have to defend our Warrior Princess and her actions regarding the THIRD death of Joxer in this ep.

I think Xena's actions were not only totaly "defensible", they were "just" when she chakramed him in the chest. After all, it was HIS great idea to try and make peace between the two houses by becoming their mutual enemy.

Fortunately for he and Gabrielle, the memory of multiple arrows impaling them before they died was wiped clean by the rooster the next day.

NOT so for our Warrior Princess.

"You...You KILLED him?"

Yeah, Gabrielle, you gotta problem with that? :p

Loved, loved, loved this ep. What a joy before all the strain and strife in our near future.

And where do I stand on the subtext questions?

Teaser sleep scene totally platonic.

My "Hickey" explanation... Gabrielle would NOT look so distracted/embarrassed if there was some "other" explanation (like Ares etc), and no one else could have gotten as close to Xena without her punching his/her lights out.

What I want to know... is anyone else wondering why Gabrielle is sleeping UNDER the hay in the barn?

Or why Gabrielle DOESN"T want to "RISE AND SHINE, EVERYONE" ?

I suspect somebody drank too much the night before, and was waking with a Gabrielle sized hangover.

Sigh.

One more "normal" ep... before all hell breaks loose for our two friends.

^I showed "Been There, Done That" to some friends who never wanted to see an episode of Xena 'cause they were sure it would be stupid. They laughed their asses off.

I absolutely loved the boldness of having Xena kill Joxer for a laugh. And brother, did I ever laugh! And then Gabby's reaction just kept me laughing.

^^Re: Gabby's reaction. I loved the difficulty she had in pulling the chakram out.

(Yes, I am sick. Its a curse, really. )

Speaking of Gabby, loved how she was fighting full tilt in the big brawl, and Xena came by and stole her fighting staff to do some measurements. As soon as she's satisfied with her proposed trajectory, she leans back and "notices" Gabby's predicament. The bard is fighting hand to hand and could REALLY use her staff! After Xena tosses it back, the teacher admires the student's fighting style as she now makes quick work of him. Loved Xena's commentary.

"Good girl!" :bolian:

Forgot to ask, are they willing to see any more eps of Xena?

'Been there done that' is excellent, it mixes the serious (Xena mourning for Joxer and Gabby) with the extremely funny. I remember some Joxer haters actually cheered when Xena killed him at a convention screening. He actually proves himself pretty useful here and I love the idea that the fiancee doesn't tell Xena his plight because he's a sexist who was expecting Hercules or Sinbad. Totallty excellent especially Lucy's Yosemite Sam bout of rage

^^ To be fair to the "sexist" looking for Sinbad... once he realized "she" was the hero he needed , he still wasn't allowed to "interfere" by coming up to her and spilling the beans.

Yosemite Sam was good, but I liked the part where she was doing a backbend/headstand on the haybale, revisiting all her days until she could figure out what small thing she had missed.

Argo looked so patient.

Episode 49 season 3 #3 "The Dirty half Dozen"

Thankfully, this isn't a show about clams. ;)

Well, there's a commentary by the writer on the DVD, explaining his thought processes... all I can say is that one can't hit a grandslam every time.

The ep was "okay", and for the most part felt like a "breather" to me, while we waited for the start of some really heavy duty stress coming down the road for our two friends.

Mr Sears was hoping 2 of his new characters would have been spun off in a new tv series... all I can say is as handsome as Darnell was, I don't think I would have become a fan of the show.

Getting back to the ep... I really liked the beginning of the teaser with the frightened Athenian Soldier praying to Athenia... and the way a SILENT Agathon just came up and killed him.

Once Agathon started talking, I just brushed him off as a boor and my ears turned off whenever his mouth was moving.

As for the rest of the teaser, Gabrielle has added "arsonist" to her repertoire, and Xena has to resort to freeing murderers to help her bring down Ares' newest find.

The story doesn't grab me much, although I did like the part where the three villians used knives and a javelin and a crossbow to allow Xena to storm the castle.

That was cool.

Let me retract that negative statement. The "A" story doesn't grab me, but the "B" story... the ongoing conversation between Xena and Gabrielle about good and evil and their friendship was interesting.

Gabrielle: "Can I ask you something? These people-- all of 'em-- were they murderers before you met them? I mean, it seems like, maybe they-- "
Xena: "Gabrielle-- it was me. I changed them. Before they met me, they were-- "
Gabrielle: "They were like me-- real people-- maybe even good people. Walsim-- I-- I could see him as a farmer at one time."
Xena: "He was a carpenter."
Gabrielle: "I wonder, what would have happened if I had met you before-- before-- you know-- "
Xena: "Gabrielle, I could never see you as being evil. There is a difference between them and you."
Gabrielle: "What difference? Xena, I have changed so much since I met you. I wonder how much of that is timing."
Xena: "Does it really matter?"
Gabrielle: (Her face says...yes it does) "Am I really who I am? Or am I what you made me?"

(Just a reminder re: alternate timeline Gabrielle in season 2's "Remember Nothing". She wasn't "evil"... she was just damaged beyond repair. There's a difference.)

We, like Gabrielle, are so used to seeing the impact that Xena has on the young woman, that we forget the impact Gabrielle's had on Xena. She's someone who's basically given Xena something she hasn't had for the 10 years before Gabrielle came into her life. Or, at least, hasn't had since M'Lila died protecting Xena from those Roman soldiers. Unconditional love.

Hmmmm.

What else did I like?

I liked the way Gabrielle elbowed Glaphyra's neck against the bars of their jail cell, when she disrespected Perdicus.

I liked the way Xena put Glyphyra in her place after said encounter.

Gabrielle: "I'm not a little girl-- and I have met some good men. I married one."
Glaphyra: "Yeah? And how long was he good? I notice he's not with you now! Maybe he lost interest. Or maybe he decided to find another conquest!"
Gabrielle: (Elbow to Glaphyra's neck) "Maybe he was murdered."
Xena: "By Callisto... a woman."
Glaphyra: "I've tried them already. They're made of that same metal. She hasn't seen much of the world, has she?"
Xena: "Gabrielle's been through more than you'd think-- yes, more than you. And, despite everything, she doesn't carry hatred toward others. Good people don't."
Glaphyra: "And the bad people?"
Xena: "The bad people are us, Glaphyra-- who I was; who you are. You know, you're so quick to blame everything on men, you have never once looked inside yourself for the answers. It's something that I had to learn. Gabrielle is a good teacher. Who knows? If...if I had met her back when I met you, maybe it'd be me who changed."

The scene ended with Glaphyra coming up to Gabby and asking her to share her husband's name. The thing I noticed, about the next scene in the jail cell, was Gabrielle crying. I guess she shared more than his name with her. We need to remember, their marriage and his funeral were less than a year ago.

Hmmmm. What else.

I did like the running gag between Darnelle and Gabrielle re: her fighting techniques.

During their first big fight with the armored soldiers...

Darnell: "Where'd you learn that?!"
Gabrielle:
(Upending another soldier with her staff, shouts back) "I'm a princess !"

Or during their last big fight in the castle...

Darnell: "Hey! That's not how a princess fights!"
Gabrielle: "Amazon Princess!"

And of course... its nice to be reminded that Gabrielle's courage doesn't just exist when she has a staff in her hands.

The armory they are standing in is about to blow up.

Xena: "Gabrielle, Glaphyra, get out."
Gabrielle: "I'm not leaving!"
Glaphyra: "Like she said!

Its also nice to be reminded that Xena doesn't reserve her WarriorPhilospher mantle just for cursed sea Captains.

Xena: "Ain't that somethin'? I've got that answer to your question. Are you who you are, or are you who I made you?"
Gabrielle:
"And?"
Xena: "You're Gabrielle-- bard, Amazon Princess-- best friend. Nobody made you who you are-- it was already there. The question is, who would I be without you?"
Gabrielle: "Hmm-- I can answer that. You'd still be heroic Xena. You were on that path when we met."
Xena: "Are you crazy? Without you to keep me on the straight and narrow-- "
Gabrielle: "You'd have managed."
Xena: "Hey!"
Gabrielle: "Just not as well."
Xena: "Hang on a minute."

:techman:

Episode 49... and neither Xena or Gabrielle have brought up that "word" yet.
...

...

...

Spoilers for "The Debts", down the road.

Its amazing, that everything Gabrielle means/represents to Xena in this ep... the light that keeps her on the straight and narrow", will soon disappear.

I know how crazed I was the first time I saw Season 5's AND season 6's premiere on Voyager. WHAT did they do to MY Captain!!!!!

I can only guess at how outraged the Xenites were during the first showing of most of the next 14 eps.

But, again, in the interest of full disclosure... since I know where the stories go in both series... I can accept it and "go with it" much easier the 2nd time around. :)

The Production numbers get a little screwed up this season.

WHoosh says this is episode 53, Season 3 #4. "The Deliverer"

But in its airing schedule its episode 50, which explains a few things in the teaser. Ares working in his forge on a "new metal" he's planning on giving "some" people. (Sounds like what he did in the previous ep, right?).

What an episode.

I'm not really sure where to begin... so I guess I'll begin at the end of season 1 with a simple idea.

Betrayal: to be unfaithful in guarding, maintaining, or fulfilling: to betray a trust.

Galen: “She should have hit him an inch lower. She could have killed the monster.”
Xena: “She knew that-- that’s why he’s still alive.”
Marmax: “Are you telling me that she’d rather die, then takethe life of a man she doesn’t even know?”
Xena: “Gabrielle lives by her own code. That code doesn’t include killing.”
Marmax: “As I said before, a girl like that should not be brought into a war zone.”

and later in the same episode, as she kneels beside Gabrielle's hospital bed.

Xena: “Gabrielle. You know, if I could do it all over again, I’d take the southern route. I’m so sorry.”
Marmax: “She may well pull through.”
Xena: “You were right, I shouldn’t have brought herhere.”
Marmax: “I guess we all make mistakes.”
Xena: “My pride may have killed my best friend.”

One has to expect certain things, when you tag along after a Warrior Princess. One, is that there are going to be many trials and tribulations along the way, ones in which violence may occur and death may result.

Gabrielle certainly has seen her fair share in the last 2+ years of following Xena about. But in the process she has learned to protect herself, to use the fighting staff with stunning accuracy, and to watch out not only for herself but for the mentor who leads her.

During the first season reviews, I tended to call her a "squire" more than a "sidekick", since that was what she seemed. Her payment for following/helping Xena was a chance to see the world and to develope the confidence that she can take care of herself.

But squires or apprentices do have a certain expectation of their mentors. That they'll never ask more than the squire can deliver, that they'll never wantonly endanger the squire's life.

Xena betrayed that simple trust, and Marmax wasn't there to call her on it. And it wasn't because of her pride, this time... it was because of her anger at her own betrayal at the hands of Caesar.

Betrayal: to deliver or expose to an enemy by treachery or disloyalty:

Caesar: "Break her legs!"

Once Xena hears Crafstar rail against Caesar, she puts her judgment on hold and runs straight at trouble. She signs up to fight a war in Britannia, which she knows from previous experience means she's just consigned Gabrielle to that same war.

From season 2's Ulysses...

Xena: “By my count, you have three now.”
Ulysses: “I couldn’t ask you to--”
Xena: “You didn’t.”
Ulysses: “We’d be going up against a god. Your friend--”
Gabrielle: “-- goes where Xena goes.”

Its only while enroute that Xena admits the woman she's going to help, isn't exactly a "friend".

Xena: “Boadicea and I were allies a long time ago in Gaul.”
Gabrielle: “You were allies?”
Xena: “In a sense. She thought I was a friend, and I just needed an army. So I let her think whatever she wanted to, until I took control of her men.”
Gabrielle: “You used her.”
Xena: “I ordered her killed. But she escaped, and then she and Persuticus joined forces. They attacked me-- but I defeated them-- and they retreated north to Britannia. So you see-- I’m not the only one dealing with betrayal.”

Betrayal: to disappoint the hopes or expectations of; be disloyal to: to betray one's friends.

Some amazing scenes on the way to Britannia. It was nice to see Gabrielle on a boat without the nausea that plagued her other trips to sea. It was nice to see her speaking quietly to Crafstar about his religion, his beliefs. It certainly felt different from a usual ep, given the fact that Gabrielle seemed to be spending more time with him than with Xena, but one chocked that up to Xena strategizing their next moves, and Gabrielle's natural curiosity about this new person leading them to a new land.

I have to admit, I loved Boadicea, from her chariot driving entrance, to her no-nonsense critique of Xena's signaling ability.

Boadicea: “It’s been a while, Xena.”
Xena: “You got my message?”
Boadicea: “Barely-- you need to polish your sword.”

And although we never saw the scene to which the women refer, I liked the idea that she could see through Xena enough to know how she would respond if she knew Gabrielle had been captured by Caesar.

Xena: “You lied to me. Gabrielle was never brought back here, and you know it.”
Boadicea:
“Yes, I was told. But we had to get out of there, and I knew you wouldn’t leave. I have to tell you something.”

But that little betrayal can be forgiven, as long as Boadicea gives Xena the men to take Gabrielle back from her captors.

Caesar: “You’re a friend of Xena’s.”
Gabrielle: “Uh... uh... she hardly knows me. She probably doesn’t even know I’m gone. I mean... she hardly knows when I’m around...ha-ha. Come to think of it, she doesn’t even know my name.”
Caesar: “Hmm, well, we’ll see. You see, Xena’s fatal flaw is her emotion. She feels. She cares. Not exactly good attributes for a true warrior. Guard them. First daylight, we take them to the hill.”

It's interesting, when you think of it, that despite all these eps we don't really know what Gabrielle believes in. She knows the Greek gods exist, but does she worship them?

On the ship to Britannia...

Gabrielle: “It’s, it’s... it’s hard for people to believe in something that, they can’t see or touch or... or hear.”
Crafstar: “When was the last time you saw love, or friendship? You see its effect. You’ll see the effect of our god when he brings his kingdom to Earth.”

And later, while a captive of Caesar's, she asks him...

Gabrielle: “Crafstar, do you have faith in your god?”

Gabrielle knows the "gods", she's even met a few. But there's only 1 being that she worships... that she has faith in, and fortunately or unfortunately for Gabrielle, that being is all too mortal.

Gabrielle and Crafstar are both hanging from crosses. Their wrists/legs have been tied, no nails this time.

Roman Captain: (To his second in command) “There’s no way the Warrior Princess’ll miss this." (To Gabrielle) Caesar wanted one more thing. Your legs are to be broken. He said it would mean something to Xena.”
[ACT III]
[Just as the Roman soldier steps forward to break Gabrielle's legs... a hand reaches up from under the sod and pulls him down. A warrior cry erupts as Xena jumps up from her hiding place, along with several of Boadicea's best warriors. From a nearby hill, we see Boadicea herself lead the charge of a unit of her elite guard towards the crucifixion site. Caesar is watching from a great distance, and he is very displeased.]
Xena: “Gabrielle.”
Gabrielle: “Timing-- we have got to work on timing.”
[Xena takes two daggers from the belt of a fallen Roman, and reminscent of M'Lila, throws them at the bonds holding Gabrielle to the cross. Gabrielle falls forward, into Xena's arms]
Xena: “You all right?”
[Caesar himself takes a javalin and tries to throw it at Xena's position on the hillock. A wellthrown Chakram splits it in half and renders the weapon useless. Boadicea's men cheer at the feat.]

One would think... after losing Gabrielle to Caesar's clutches, and her nearly being crucified, that Xena would have woken up from her Caesar obsession and started taking more notice of Gabrielle.

Betrayal: to show or exhibit; reveal; disclose: an unfeeling remark that betrays her lack of concern.

But after rescuing her firend, after pulling her aside in their camp, all Xena can ask about... is Caesar.

Gabrielle: “Xena-- now, I know what you’re gonna say. Look, I’m sorry. I... it’s not like I wanted to be captured by Caesar.”
Xena: “Did you talk to him?”
Gabrielle:
“Caesar? Yeah, I did-- um. Well, he has this aura about him-- ”
Xena: “It’s the same thing that draws a moth to a flame, and with pretty much the same result.”
Gabrielle: “Well, he said something about-- dividing-- ”
Xena: “Dividing a woman’s sensibilites from her emotion? Yeah. Yeah, I know his philosophy.”

And she goes back to doing what she planned from the moment she heard Crafstar rail against Caesar in Gaul. Plannning his destruction.

The only problem is... she's made a grevious tactical error. One even Ares tried to point out.

She's left her flank exposed.

Ares: “Whatever you might think about us, Xena, you know us. You might love us; you might hate us-- but we are not evil. This god is.”
Xena:
“Evil to you.”
Ares: “Trust me, Xena!”
Xena: “Based on what?!”

Betrayal: to deceive, misguide, or corrupt: to seduce and desert

Crafstar: (To Gabrielle, during a ceremony after retaking the temple of the "one god".) “Things have changed, and a lot.”
Meridian:
“But first, the door must be opened. The path of his arrival must be sanctified in blood--pure blood-- innocent blood.”
Crafstar: (His acolytes take him and strap him to the altar) “What are you talking about?”
Gabrielle: (2 more retrain Gabrielle) “Let go of me.”
Meridian:
“This world will end today. The hand of Dahok will sweep the Earth-- bringing with it the winter of a thousand years-- killing everyone who stands in the way of his world.”
Crafstar: “No!" (Looks back to Gabrielle, pleading) "This isn’t our god. Gabrielle!”
[Chant]
Meridian: (Raises a sacrifical dagger over Crafstar) “With this life-- we praise Dahok-- the dark one.” (Gabrielle breaks free and disarms Meridian. She uses the dagger to cut Crafstar free, but Meridian comes at her and Crafstar with a long sword.)
Crafstar: “Look out! Gabrielle!” (As he rolls away from her downward blow, Gabrielle uses the dagger and plunges it into Meridian's abdomen. The red stain spreads obviously over Meridian's whilte gown. Gabrielle is in SHOCK.)

In fact, I suspect the entire audience of Xenaphiles were SHOCKED the night this first aired, and joined in with Gabrielle when she screamed.

G: [Screams] “No!!!!!!"

Xena has Caesar right where she wants him. He's committed his Legions to the battle against Boadicea. He has to divide his army to fight up 7 hills, and while he's doing THAT, Xena herself will take the battle DIRECTLY to him, and get the revenge she's been dreaming about for over 12 years. In the process, she's also been given back the respect if not the forgiveness of a woman she once betrayed.

Xena: “Caesar still has to divide up his army to attack the hills. Hold your cavalry until he tries to regroup. I’m going after Caesar. He’s mine.”
Boadicea: “Xena. You’re not the person I once knew. I can see that. I can’t forgive you. But-- I can thank you for what you’re doing now. (The two warriors give each other the forearm grasp before Xena looks off into the distance and sees a strange sight ) What’s the matter? What’s that?”
Xena:
“I don’t know, but it’s centered over the temple. That’s where Gabrielle is.”

This is what fans live for.

When the hero stands on the edge of the abyss, and realizes "this way disaster lies" and they step back.

Her obsession with Caesar is now but a memory, as Xena runs to the temple where her friend is, and finds a shattered Gabrielle.

Gabrielle: (Crying over Meridian, as she tries to explain her actions to her mentor, her warrior, her friend.) “No, I stabbed her. Xena-- I ju-- I murdered her.”
Xena: “Gabrielle, it’s-- it’s-- ”
Crafstar: [Interrupts] “Thank you, Xena.”
Gabrielle:
(Tries to crawl away from him, behind Xena) “Oh! No.”
Xena: (Stand up, sword drawn) “What have you done to her, you bastard?!”
Crafstar:
“Done to her? I fulfilled her destiny. She’s for Dahok.”
Xena:
“Who’s Dahok?”
Crafstar: “The one god... the dark force that will sweep this world-- the old, crippled, blind, maimed, your so-called gods... all will be destroyed. Dahok will bring the cleansing fire of war to the world-- a war begun over innocence.”

And then, to add insult to injury, Crafstar reminds Xena of her complicity in Gabrielle's transformation.

Xena: “This is not the one god of the Israelites.”
Crafstar: “No-- that one will be taken care of in due time-- but thank you for Gabrielle.”
Xena:
“I don’t what you’re talking about.”
Crafstar: “Look inside yourself. You brought her here. And why did you come? To defeat Caesar. Your hatred brought you here. Dahok appreciates rage.”

Which is a good thing, since Xena got pretty enraged at the end of this one. She pulled out all the stops to defeat "The Deliverer", from her breast dagger.... Well, that answers one question. You can get hurt. You get pretty mad, too." to her rapier wit ... "You half-witted toady to a third-rate god!" And as we see Gabrielle fall toward the firepit that just consumed "The Deliverer"... we see that Xena isn't above taking a flying leap to save her friend... "I got’cha. I got’cha. I got’cha. You all right? Run! Get down!" as the temple of Dahok explodes around them.

The final scene, as Xena cradles Gabrielle in the runins of the Temple (which look an aweful lot like Stonehenge.) is heart wrenching.

Gabrielle: “Xena?”
Xena: “I’m here, Gabrielle.”
Gabrielle: “It hurts inside.”
Xena:
“What?”
Gabrielle: “Everything’s changed-- everything.”
Xena: “Hey-- it’s gonna be OK-- promise.”

Sweetie, don't make promises you can't keep.

I realize there was a huge controversy before this ep aired, and after this ep aired, about the symbolic rape of a main character on this show.

After reading several of Mr Sears' defenses, all I can say is "You say tomAHto, I say tomato."

Since I've been using multiple definitions of Betrayal in this review, I'll throw out the fourth definition of Rape: an act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse; despoliation; violation:

That pretty much sums up what happened to Gabrielle in this ep.

I've also read the comments at whoosh describing why some didn't need this reminder of sexual violence against women in this show that celebrates women empowerment every week.

I appreciate that POV, and though sympathetic I still find this ep riveting.

Still, I think despite Mr Sears' fervent viewpoint perhaps he should step back and rewatch the ep that came immediately before this one. Another ep that IIRC he wrote.

Remember Walsim questioning why Gabrielle was on their mission? And Darnell's response?

Walsim: "I know why I'm here. I know why they're here. But what are you here for? Emergency food?"
Gabrielle: [nervous snicker]
Glaphyra: "Lay off her, Walsim!"
Darnell: "Yeah-- she's a princess. Besides-- I can think of one reason to have her around. (Xena walks up) So! You were talking about breakfast, huh?"

Was that just an unfortunate reminder that women will always be at risk for sexual attack the ep before Gabrielle is symbolically impregnated by Dahok, the bringer of evil? I seriously doubt this was "foreshadowing", but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the episode schedule was rearranged because it was inappropriate to hear Darnell say "that" AFTER Gabrielle is "symbolically impregnated" by Dahok.

Rape: an act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse; despoliation; violation:

Gabrielle: “Xena?”
Xena: “I’m here, Gabrielle.”
Gabrielle: “It hurts inside.”

I can't honestly remember much of the Dirtier Half Dozen which doesn't bode well for it. As for The Deliverer that's more like it, Xena and Bodiecea together is terrific, her vendetta against Ceaser one of the flaws in her character but making her much more human, it's utterly understandable. The rape of Gabrielle in the temple is horrific, borders on GOT-fic but gives us one of the greatest storylines in the whole of Xena
