I'm sure there are some good Season 6 episodes. But, for as much hate as I've seen some people (not here, but in other parts of the internet) give Joxer, I always considered him an important part of the show. So without him, and with the general decline in writing, I just never wanted to keep going once the show time jumps. I might eventually, but its just not super appealing right now.
Oh, I think we all love Joxer here.
In fact, although its the first ep after the birth of Eve, season 5's
Eternal Bonds is a bittersweet ode to the ship that would
never sail... Gabrielle and Joxer.
Joxer is ill and has been intermittently delirious. He's
not delirious now as Gabrielle cradles him near death.
Joxer: "I dreamt we were in trouble-- you know?"
Gabrielle: "
Us? No way."
Joxer: "Us.
How come there was never an `us,' Gabrielle?"
Gabrielle: "Why... why do people love the people that they do? I don't... I don't know."
Joxer: "I know why. Because you made me feel special."
Gabrielle: "You
are special."
Joxer: "
Not special enough."
Gabrielle: "You're special enough to see me through the worst times of my life, enough that I've come to rely on you as a
very good
friend."
Joxer: "Why didn't you love me, Gabrielle?"
Gabrielle: "
I do love you. It's just
not the way that you want it... I guess. I wish I did. (Gabrielle hears someone approaching their hideout)
Joxer, lie still, OK? (Its another friend of Joxer) Xena--
thank the gods. Did you get to the tree?"
I agree with you. I LOVED Joxer, more than Gabrielle. Which is why you might enjoy Soul Posession and When Fates Collide...
And since WFC is really a stand alone, mirror universe (
not like Married with Fishsticks!!!) kind of ep, you don't need to know anything about season 5 or 6 to enjoy it. (Knowing the first ep of season 5 helps with some irony in WFC but that's about it.)
What isn't "ironic" however, is
who stood by the Empress throughout the ep, even when she was stripped of power and sent to her death. He was there, so she wouldn't be "alone".
"You're
special enough to see me through the
worst times of my life, enough that I've come to rely on you as a very good
friend."
