Any TOS fans unable to go back to the old series?

I was 13 in September of 1966 (October birthday); I love the remastered effects. So, I think it can be chalked up to personal taste.

It's been said that we Trek fans share a common singularity event- we all, for some unknown reason, age more slowly than the rest of humanity. Personally, I feel closer to 39 than 49, and I can do the Kirk-Fu to prove it. Jeri, are YOU actually 10 years younger than YOUR birth date indicates? My Wife is... :wtf:
Could it have to do with chronoton particles emitted by tertiary wave displacors set up to piggy-back ST transmission signals initiated by aliens attempting to perfect our race...???

I want a grant to study this phenomenon!!!

i don't know but i like the sound of that.... given a little time. being 25 i would hate to seem 15 again.... on the other hand, at 35 to have not aged much would be pretty nice. how do i jump on this bandwagon now? i've already watched every episode of TOS (and pissed off my b/f in the process) do i have to keep them running over and over? am i to be subjected to every series up to the end of 'enterprise'? (please no)

It's a slow effect at first, people being 15, but actually seeming more like 13, 20 year olds able to pass for 16, & so on. It seems to take total effect by 34, when most would swear you were in your twenties.
I ain't complainin', just didn't actually identify it until about a decade ago.;)

ah, slow is good, in that kind of thing. :p
but you didn't answer my most pressing questions - amount of exposure necessary. PLEASE tell me i don't have to sit through every episode of DS9, or keep TOS running 24/7, because these things i simply cannot do. :wtf: not that i don't like TOS, it's just that i have obligations, ya know, to other people. one of whom is quite small and is not in the least interested in the spacemen.... yet. :evil:

This is an easy one. I've loved Classic Trek ever since I was in college because it's just that, a classic. And I bought the remastered editions as well. The ideas and the characters of that show still resonate with me as they did decades ago.

And BTW, I still consider The Wrath of Khan to be the best Trek movie ever made.

While I (amazingly to me) thought the movie was "fun," I never thought it could replace TOS. It was almost a "fun parody" for me. Kind of a bit more serious Galaxy Quest, with all the little TOS-fan-aimed asides. But, I'll very probably be watching TOS on my deathbed.

in the evening i have been rewatching TNG episodes (i started rewatching a couple of weeks ago...starting with TBoBWs (i skipped the first couple of seasons)....

Nope sorry. If you like TNG you have to pay your dues each time by watching the first two years, first (It's a law somewhere. *grin*).

I agree 100%!!! In fact, when i eventually get the re-remastered sets (i still have the original DVDs where there are only two episodes on each DVD) i WONT be watching the versions with the updated special effects. For me, that would be tantamount to heresy!

They aren't as bad as I feared, for the most part. There are some (early work I assume) that look a bit too cartoonish for me, but overall they're okay. And I did actually like seeing more of the Shuttlecraft (I STILL want one!), although Spock's takeoff in the Galileo 7 leaves much to be desired in a Vulcan shuttlecraft pilot. But overall, I still love and prefer the old grainy TOS... warts and all! (although I may not want to see the high definition-level of "wartage")

The suggestion to update the TOS effects came up again and again on this and other boards, over the years, and I was never a big fan of the idea -- I really didn't think it was necessary -- but once CBS decided to do it and once I'd seen some of the work, I figured that even the most principled stand on the updated effects ought to be able to leave a little room for appreciating what they did with the planet-killer and the Constellation in "The Doomsday Machine"

Oddly enough, while the effects are good, that is the episode I have the biggest problem with... it makes Kirk look stupid and his crew worse. Watch when they approach the Constellation for the first time in both versions. In the edited version you'd have to be an idiot not to come to the "attacked" conclusion well before the visuals were that "close." While the burnt AMT kit did look cheesy, Kirk got more points for recognizing the attack from further off, in my book. The spectacular effects detracted from the story and characterization for me.

If I was on a starship, I'd prefer my Captain saw danger as fast as original episode Kirk. Kirk #2 seemed a bit more Picard-ish to me. (not meant so much as a slam, but Picard would stop and think a bit about all the possibilities. Then he'd have to wait and see how Troi "felt" about it, see if Wes-Wesley Crusher had a saving answer, etc.) (Okay, the last boy-wonder bit was a bit of a slam. *grin*)

From my estimates, it seems that repeated exposure of TOS is necessary for the syndrome to manifest- many who went on to other Trek series have not displayed the full effect.
Key phrases seem to have been encoded with the signal; "Not with my ship you don't!", and "I shall certainly break your neck" being among the most highly regestering on my instruments. Of course, instruments only regester those things they were designed to, so I suggest a full spread of all TOS eps, just to be sure.:techman:

This point rated a solid "meh."

Well, I can only say that's always been my working hypothesis. I have a few pictures of when I was 34 (1,2,3,4,5,6), and people thought I was about 10 years younger. I met my husband that year, and he was 21. We've been together 23 years. I look like everybody's mom or grandmother now.

In their defense, that and Spock's takeoff in the Galileo 7 were the only two that readily come to mind (because they detract from my heroes dammit! *grin?*). Some of the improvements are spectacular. The aforementioned situations aside, those two episodes are among the most improved.

Unfortunately, the effect does not last forever. Those damned aliens only care about us until we're out of child-bearing age.

I *can't* be the only kid that put together that AMT kit just to burn it & paint "Constellation" on it, can I?
It was a moment when I could be as accurate as a television show, FX-wise!
:guffaw:

<snip>
You do whatever you decide, but I was watching back then, too, so don't go trying to play oldy and farty with me.
:lol::lol:

(damn! the old fart card usually works!)
I think you'll find that there are quite a few of us around. ;)

Hey, who knows? When i get the re-remastered blu-ray set i may change my mind. Stranger things have been known to happen!

Bah, I don't buy it. :p While there are quite a few eps from those first two season that I like, including some series favorites, there are others which I would be perfectly happy never to watch again -- the thoroughly awful "Justice" being at the head of the list.

As long as we love our children & help them to realize the greatness of infinite diversity in infinite combinations, we are all "young."

Plus: eating like Spock & doing Kirk-Fu helps!;)

I couldn't get myself to burn one! Especially after all that sanding to get the grid lines off the saucer! That'd be sacrilege! That'd be like killing one of the other out of the big four characters! (Kirk/Spock/McCoy/Enterprise)

I find it hard to watch Babylon 5 after seeing the new Star Trek. Clearly JJ Abrams has messed with the timeline to the point where B5 couldn't possibly exist. In fact when I got home from the first viewing, my Mollari action figure mysteriously disappered, and Kosh's voice was replaced by Alvin of the Chipmunks. Ivanova turned into K-9 right before my eyes. D'lenn was recast as a drunk bald guy with an eyepatch.
