Any TOS fans unable to go back to the old series?

The level of being able to see every zipper & painted wooden wall & smudged make-up on Shatner's head just short of the widow's peak hair addition in upconverted standard DVD is quite sufficient for me at this point- any more would be distracting IMO.
That all sounds good; I think you have inspired me to give our HD-DVD's one more look before the blu-ray comes out.

<snip> I'm 24 myself, but the sometimes clunky effects or general cheese factor doesn't turn me off. In fact, I think that's part of its charm! It's nice to watch a show that doesn't take itself too seriously; Star Trek TOS isn't afraid to be a goofball now and then.

:D

I agree 100%!!! In fact, when i eventually get the re-remastered sets (i still have the original DVDs where there are only two episodes on each DVD) i WONT be watching the versions with the updated special effects. For me, that would be tantamount to heresy!

They're nicely incorporated into the show- it's merely what they would have done back then if they could have, not over the top FX like in today's Summer blockbusters.
Colour me a heretic.;)

CHRISISALL,

Consider yourself colored!;)
Its really a personal thing, you know? i cannot watch movies that have been colorized either.

Its all good!

The suggestion to update the TOS effects came up again and again on this and other boards, over the years, and I was never a big fan of the idea -- I really didn't think it was necessary -- but once CBS decided to do it and once I'd seen some of the work, I figured that even the most principled stand on the updated effects ought to be able to leave a little room for appreciating what they did with the planet-killer and the Constellation in "The Doomsday Machine" or the matte paintings in "Amok Time" or "Requiem for Methuselah" or "By Any Other Name". It's not all an equal improvement and they did get a few things wrong, but there's some really nice work among the "remastered" visuals. If you still don't want to watch the altered episodes, you can take a look at reels containing just the effects shots for some of them here.

Y'know, I was like that as well, until I bought The Mask Of Zorro- it came original & colourized, & THE COLOURIZED VERSION WAS AMAZING!!! It REALLY looks like an old slightly faded 40's colour production!:techman:
Randi, the remastered effects are beautiful; trust me. :)
But not SO beautiful as to distract- that's the real beauty of them!

*swoons just thinking about them...*
I'll be in my bunk.

I think you'll be hard pressed to find anybody that doesn't like TOS anymore because of the new movie...I mean LOL here...LOL.

It reaffirmed my love of TOS ...if that's even possible. I wanted to run home and watch TOS after the movie even !!

Which, as was discussed in a related thread, was, I think, part of JJ's plan. He knew kids would see the movie, kid like mine, and then come to old farts like me and ask "haven't you been watching Star Trek all this time?" as if, suddenly, Star Trek existed for them.

We have watched more TOS since XI, and when I say we I mean my kids and I, than we ever did before. And we just watched Khan this weekend because I was listenting to the commentary (by the way, Nick, this was a much better job than the hatchet job you did on Xi's commentary) that my kids, who walked in while I was watching, wanted to watch the entire movie over again..so we did...all in fabulous bluray!!!

M'SHARAK: Thanks so much for that link. I checked out the remastered effects and...well....i still don't think i will be able to watch them. Lets just say that TOS as it was originally done was ingrained upon my DNA at a sub-atomic level!
I think because i watched it as a 10 year old, back in '66, it IS so much of a part of the whole experience for me. (Or we could just put it this way: Im old, I'm farty and i can't deal with change!)

However, what i may try doing is this: If i can tie my 15-1/2 yr old daughter down (and not have social services knocking at my door) i may just try to get her to watch with me with the newer effects. That might help reel her into the fold!

I've started to watch them over again, and enjoying it even more now. Find my self watching the actions of kirk ,spcok and mccoy and thinking how close the new ones are to them with some of there reactions .

You do whatever you decide, but I was watching back then, too, so don't go trying to play oldy and farty with me. :p I'm just saying I thought that they were generally pretty faithful to the original feel, though there are of course those who hold different opinions. (Good luck on subverting the daughter, though. :techman: )

I read these posts, and how do I feel?
I feel... young.
I was only six when the whole Trek phenom started. It's nice to be on a board with some peeps my own age! The Dark Angel board I went to for a while had nothing but kids barely out of their teens posting on it.:wtf:

My first impulse was "DON'T CHANGE A GORRAM THING!!!" But the first remastered episode I saw ( Squire Of Gothos) instantly changed my mind, for the reasons M'Sharak stated.:techman:

still a tos fan
:)

as for remastered it depends on the episode.
with balance of terror it seemed like they were still feeling their way but
they really hit it with doomsday machine and some others.

with doomsday machine they thew in an interesting touch when the shuttle
deckers steals takes off in an erratic manner to reflect his state of mind.

(damn! the old fart card usually works!)

Hey, who knows? When i get the re-remastered blu-ray set i may change my mind. Stranger things have been known to happen!
