Any new fans?

I'm new to the Star Trek community, but not really new to Star Trek. I do know a lot of people who have completely submerged themselves in Trek since the movie came out, though. Part of the reason why I decided to join the forums and stuff.

I suppose considering all the completely new people, I definitely chose the best time to get involved.

Yeah... Don't speak a word of Vulcan (yet). LOL. Well, I can proudly say "kiss my *ss" ("e chuta") and "bantha fodder" ("bantha poodoo") in Huttese, which is the extent of my sci-fi/fantasy language skills.
Ori'jate! (Very good!)Heheh. I know *some* Mandalorian, but it's all written, nothing spoken. It's the up and coming Star Wars language. ;) I've always wanted to learn to read/write Vulcan or something. Klingon doesn't appeal to me...

I've been a fan for nearly 30 years... and I can remember from school the girls that would give you that 'look' over Star Trek... and now because of this new movie, they are fans of Star Trek. And they were the hot girls.... so around 20 later it's now cool to be a Star Trek fan... go figure.

Welcome to Trek. I started watching in the early 70's with TAS, but I'm new to the boards because of this new film so in some small measure, my fanboyness(sp?) has grown.

heh.... in all fairness, i do not speak any vulcan. i have no idea how to even begin to learn something like that, as i have never seen any books on the subject or heard of anyone who knows anything about it. i totally cheated and stole this from the internets because i admire vulcans.

and i agree with thelin - klingon does not seem like any fun. but then, neither are the people who speak it. ....remind me - why are they so popular?

new fans are what star trek is about. i think fans push the series just as much as producers and studios do. the business side will respond to star trek's audience. the more new people, the more people want something different and fresh, the more likely more new trek will become a reality.

It actually doesnt surprise me at all that I became a Trek fan. I'm already a complete anime freak and I start slowly getting into the sci-fi genre. Just a little nudge from a shiny new movie is what did the trick!

Sweet, I'm not the only Star Trek newbie. Actually, it really doesn't surprise me either that I've gotten obsessed with this. I've always been more of a fantasy geek than scifi, but I've never been opposed to scifi either. The extent of my internet fandoms have been: Harry Potter and (not proud of it) Twilight. I'm trying to put some distance between myself and Twilight now, and convince my friends that every time they read a page of Twilight one braincell dies.

I don't know who said this, but yes, it is nice to have a new obsession. Um, Daneel, why does your avatar have Taylor Swift with vulcan ears????

To be honest, it's kind of surreal to run into so many new fans, especially so many new fans that are taking their love of the movie and applying it to stuff like TOS, the first six films and even TNG and DS9.

I'm sure Daneel will be in here in a minute, but I just want to say it was so cool they used her in clips of the Star Trek movie for her country-music awards appearance.

M'Sharak can probably find you the thread that had that in it, if a search doesn't turn it up. Probably just search using Taylor Swift in the box.

 I have my degree in English, but I don't consider myself a literary snob; I love classic literature, but my thesis was a young adult fantasy novel and I am a great fan of Harry Potter, Narnia, Lord of the Rings, etc. However, Twilight makes something inside of me cry. I try to tell myself that anything that gets my 15 year old cousin to read is a good thing, if only for that. But then I see a synopsis of Meyer's plot and feel sad again.

When I was 14, I was reading Star Wars expanded universe novels, and many of them weren't much better in terms of structure, development, or characterization. So I suppose one must go through phases and hopefully come out of them with an even stronger appreciation for quality work, if only by comparison. ;)

So, like you, Cassy, I consider myself more of a fantasy fan in general. I do love Star Wars (am I allowed to like both Star Wars and Star Trek? :shifty: ), but I consider it fantasy rather than sci-fi (which is a source of debate between my husband and me). For some reason, I had the idea that Star Trek was cold and technical. I had no idea TOS was so light-hearted and character-driven. I had no interest in the new movie until multiple people told me how much they enjoyed it. Now I'm dying to see the next installment!

The avatar image is taken from a bit which ran at the opening of this year's CMT Awards broadcast, a couple of weeks ago. Pretty amusing, in fact.

See it here. The thread is here.

first thing i set about doing after deciding i was any kind of fan at all was watching TOS in it entirety. so much fun! as someone else said, i had no idea it was so light-hearted and character-driven.

but i saw several, several episodes of DS9 in its original run, and i have never been much of a fan of that. liked a lot of the characters but it always seemed very political to me.

Just to highlight this part:

 Sorry I'm a few hours late to the party, but it's nice to know that you and M'Sharak have the situation covered, Jeri!

Glad you like my avatar Cassy4. I have to admit, I'm not a huge Taylor Swift fan (although I do think she's very talented), but after watching that CMT Awards clip, I had to use this image as my avatar!

Plus she's hot.

Welcome new fans!

Now watch TOS and DS9 on DVD! :D

And TNG! Don't forget TNG! Sure, it's aged badly in places (as has TOS), and its first two seasons are a little iffy, but there's still a lot of good stuff in there!
