Another Voyager 1st-time watch thread

I didn't care much for "Warhead".
It reminds me too much of "Dreadnaut", so it doesn't feel like a new story.
Just an old one reworked.

There are certainly similarities.

In this case, having Robert Picardo play the warhead redeemed the episode. If they've just made him a holographic forehead alien or Mark Twain or something like that, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it.

Unless Jeffery Combs played the forehead alien and was allowed to shout a lot.

I can completely get with that and I love Picardo but IMO, I still liked "Dreadnaut" and Dawsons performance in it more. "Warhead" just doesn't grab me. IMO it's feels like it's missing something.

"The Andorian Warhead Consortium runs from no one!!!!!"

:lol::lol::lol:

As much as the thought of actual torture makes me squeamish, one of my favorite scenes in all of Trek is the Soval/Shran emotional torture scene. It's like they just gave both of them carte blanche to go completely over the top. "Chain of Command" it ain't, but it's a lot of fun.

Over the top is Combs speciality.

He's even that way in person.:lol:

Yes!

Shran was my favorite character on Enterprise, including the regulars.

I think Combs is on my top 10 Trek actors to meet. Every time I think of him I just think of the scene from Waltz

DUKAT: I don't care for your tone.
WEYOUN: Spare me your endless posturing. You're lucky I speak to you at all after that pathetic display back at the hospital.
DUKAT: That's enough.
WEYOUN: Oh, I see. It's a sensitive topic. I wonder what Captain Sisko would think if he'd seen you curled up in a ball, crying yourself to sleep every night?
DUKAT: Stop it!
WEYOUN: I doubt held still have the same respect for you if he'd heard you screaming and screaming and screaming like a madman till the nurses came and the doctors had to sedate you!
DUKAT: No!

*Goes off to YouTube, inputs "Enterprsie Broken Bow" in the search expression, episodes pop up, chooses the six part one*

OK, I hear you. It's currently paused and waiting. I'll watch it now.

He was supposed to become a regular character in the "fifth season that never happened" I guess. So I've heard anyways.

EDIT: *moves over to startrek.com* It's actually legal here so I'll stick to that, and they have every episode.

Yes, Combs is without a doubt an actor worth meeting.

I loved Combs as Weyoun in DS9, but it sometimes drove me crazy that he did this "duck lip" thing when he talked, kind of like Donald Trump. Anyone else notice that?

Combs was supposed to come to a con, Supanova iirc last year in Melbourne. I was SO EXCITED!!!!!!!! I intended to buy several autographs.. but then he canceled :(

I did meet Claudia Christian from Bab 5 (Ivanova) though and she was lovely (looked EXACTLY as she did in the show), chatty, warm, personable and sweet.

Boy oh boy oh boy! I'm finally up to...

"Equinox, Part I"

All I know about this episode is that it's controversial. Tonight I'm only watching Part I, so please save any Part II spoilers until after I've seen it. Thanks!

We open with a smaller version of Voyager getting attacked. There's a bunch of people we don't know on the bridge. The Captain orders them to drop shields, and then the meaner older brothers of the ghost from Ghostbusters attack!

Turns out they're also stuck in the Delta quadrant--for them we eventually learn its been two years, and they haven't been two good years. Half the crew is dead, and Captain Ransom, who was originally more of a scientist than a battle-hardened commander, has somehow managed to keep his ship together...barely.

Just about everything works in this episode. The casting is outstanding. If I wasn't watching the credits, I wouldn't have recognized Rick Worthy as Jannar, but he's great. Both Ransom and Burke are awesome too, and are played by actors with really good voices. In fact, everyone in this episode is at their vocal best, with Janeway in particular using her lower register to be extremely...commanding.

It turns out Burke is B'Elanna's ex-boyfriend, and her nickname is BLT. Who would have guessed? In a particularly inspired moment, Kim calls Paris "Turkey Platter" in response. Like I said, everything was clicking here.

Turns out Equinox has a dirty secret--they've been using the ghosts for fuel. Janeway won't stand for it, and there's some nice philosophizing between Ransom and Janeway. I start thinking about how, even though I usually prefer the "little" episodes, this is a damn good "big" episode.

Just when you thought things couldn't get any better, NaomiWildman walks in for a cameo.

And then, when you're thinking that surely they've used up the awesomeness quotient, the Doctor activates the Equinox EMH. I almost panic as I realize that they might give us that goofball from "Message in a Bottle" (or was it another episode), but I'm beaming as I see that it's just Robert Picardo, who again gets to play someone evil. And naturally he's wonderful.

By the time of the cliffhanger, EvilDoc's gotten the Equinox crew back to their ship, Equinox has gone to warp, and one of the ghosts is flying right at Janeway's head.

Man, I'm glad I don't have to wait a whole summer to see what happens.

Sure, Janeway was a bit rigid in her interpretation of Starfleet protocols, but this was one of the best episodes of the season, if not the show.

I'm guessing the controversy comes in episode 2.

Yeah the controversy is in Part 2. Oh boy is it in part 2.

I like part 1, I don't have any issues with it. It was brilliant. The one thing that gets me is when Ransom is explaining what they did to the creatures. For me, when I was 12-13, I didn't understand how someone could do that to innocent creatures and literally made me throw up. My stomach still rolls a little. But that's just because I am Pacifist.

"The Void" contains some of my favorite music next to the "Scorpion" theme, I think. But this one is really good too. And glad you liked Part I so much! I am intensely curious what you'll think of II. I know you don't want spoilers, but this is a screenie from the very beginning of the episode just to give you an idea:

Unrelated, but I always thought it was weird they played the "Scorpion" theme on the Season 4 DVD menus. Every time I put in a Season 4 DVD I suddenly feel totally hardcore.
