Another Voyager 1st-time watch thread

*meh* Never minded the borgkiddies as Seven fodder/relief, but then shoe-horning a serious ethical dilemma into them? WTF were the writers thinking?

But! But! At least it's nice kids in a weird plot rather than annoying kids stinking up an otherwise good plot.

I only wish they'd had a Captain Janeway Day instead of a science fair - Chak could have talked like Janeway through a doll made by Naomi. I would have laughed soooooo hard.

I'm still not that crazy about the Borg kids. They mostly seem creepy to me at this point. Maybe I'll get a better appreciation for them as I get used to them.

Icheb is the only one I really warmed up to.

I think the beginning is all I remember from this episode, I generally push the Mezoti, Rebi, and what's the other one's name far from my mind.

And Captain Janeway Day :guffaw:

It's not realistic to me that parents would surrender their child like that.

Have you ever seen Sophie's Choice?
How about ROOTS?

When you understand extreme desperation in the face of survival, you'll understand how very real it is.
Look in the news. People strap bombs to their children in hopes of bringing down those that oppress them.
That stuff is very real and happens every day some where in the world.

Yes, this is what I was going to say about that. Desperate people do unthinkable things in the name of their societies, cultures, gods. I thought this twist was well-played. I liked the development of Icheb, as well as seeing Seven care about him so much.

I agree the other kids, especially the creepy mostly silent twins, are kinda meh.

As a father I can tell you that I'd take the transport and move someplace safer. And I'd probably have plenty of parents with me. Icheb's parents weren't just bad parents; they were unbelievable parents. I originally thought this was an Athenian/Minotaur situation where the planet had to provide kids to the Borg (though it's not their style), but when they revealed what was really going on it I couldn't believe it.

The Brunali didn't have to stay on that planet. It was sheer pride that was keeping them there. If I was Janeway I would have pulled a Data from "Ensigns of Command" and vaporised the essential tech that was keeping them there, then ferried the population to somewhere safer.

Even within the logic of the episode, using Icheb as a bioweapon doesn't make sense. Like I said, why not engineer a parasite that would spread the pathogen? Or figure out a way to get something nasty into the Borg foodchain? Or just move somewhere safer?

Ethically, what the parents did is indefensible; Icheb never gave his consent to be a sacrifice. If you just need someone to carry the mutated DNA, why not take volunteers?

^ I'm with you. I would have gone myself before sending my kid. But as you pointed out, no one necessarily needed to go at all.

Still, I see exodus' point that it's realistic in the sense that there are people who make kids do stuff like that.

This episode made me develop a serious soft spot for poor Icheb.

Shatnertage, you're making solid sense to me from a rational standpoint. Still I do see what exodus is saying. It's not a choice I would make, but my belief system wouldn't require or allow me to sacrifice my child. I think I'm going to classify this as one of the times where the writers were writing to the story. Like, someone had an idea that Icheb was a bioweapon and wouldn't it be cool if his own parents were the ones who made him that way...but they couldn't figure out a plausible reason any parent the audience could identify with would actually go through with something so horrific.

:cardie:

Have you LOOKED at your avatar lately?

;)

I think you'll be singing a different tune when you watch "The Haunting of Deck 12".

:bolian:

I haven't seen these eps. in 10 years so this really brings it back to me.

I liked this ep. It had a sad, but interesting concept.

Hey, I just changed my avatar. :p And I don't think that alien was creepy. He was just kind of...desperate to make friends. Not nearly as bad as the Flotter Doll.

For some reason, that picture was much funnier when it was an on-screen still and Mulgrew was reacting to it. But if I was putting together a video of funny moments in Voyager, that would be one of them.

Stained glass Kirk was nice. I think I'll bring him back in a while, with a twist.

I'll be talking about "The Good Shepherd" later, time permitting. I'm about to go to the park, then I've got to go to the unveiling of a 15-ft high interactive Blue Man Group statue, then I've got a faculty meeting. Plus lots of writing and work stuff...but I'll get to it sometime.
