Another trip down memory lane... one-hit wonders!!!

^ I wasn't insulting them :p

It's true that they only have ever released one single in the UK, and that was Whole Lotta Love on CD single in 1997 making them a one hit wonder.

Yeah, it's a stretch I know

IIRC, it was released as a single in the US back when it was new and did fairly well.

Yup...according to Wiki:

It is featured as the opening track on the band's second album, Led Zeppelin II, and was released in the US (and Japan) as a single. The US release became their first hit single, it was certified Gold on April 13, 1970, when it sold 500,000 copies.[1] In common with other Led Zeppelin songs no UK single was released but singles were released in Germany (where it reached number 1), Holland (where it reached number 4), Belgium and France.

The Church are a two hit wonder in Australia, a one hit wonder in the rest of the world. They are still together, album #23 dropping in March [aply named Untitled #23].

The lead singer/songwriter's blog occassionally references what life is like for one-hit wonders. The Time Being.

Murray Head -- "One Night in Bangkok" (you might know his younger brother Anthony)
It was his second hit after the early '70s "Superstar" (from "Jesus Christ Superstar"). Of course Tony Head played Frank N. Furter in a London Revival of Rocky Horror in the late '80s or early '90s. :)

Obviously the two of you haven't heard of Say It Ain't So, Joe ;)

Easy :

Patrick Hernandez - Born to be alive

(sometimes, I feel ashamed...)

You should be!

I really don't know why they never released singles here when they did all over the rest of the world.

They are quite an anomaly in that they are one of the biggest selling bands of all time in the UK who went their entire career without having a hit single.

Still, I found it funny as hell.

I wouldn't exactly put them in the one hit wonder category either. I saw these guys in the early 80's when they opened for Loverboy and they absolutely blew Loverboy away. It got so bad that they ended coming back out for the encore and treated us to a 1 hour set of Led Zepplin tunes that absolutely rocked. They are also still together, released an album, last year I believe, and if you get the chance to see them, do so, the recent live videos I see show me they still know how to rock

While the song you posted is certainly the one they are most known for but, honestly, this is when I first noticed them.

I haven't reviewed the thread recently so a few of these may be repeats from earlier.

Level 42 - "Something About You"

Johnny Hates Jazz - "Shattered Dreams"

Double - "The Captain of Her Heart"

Autograph - "Turn Up The Radio"

Stevie B - "Because I Love You"

Mr. Big - "To Be With You"

Stacey Q - "Two of Hearts"

Curiosity Killed the Cat - "Misfit"

Missing Persons - "Destination Unknown"

Human Radio - "Me and Elvis"

S-Express - "Theme from S-Express"

M.A.R.R.S. - "Pump Up the Volume"

Londonbeat - "I've Been Thinking About You"

Billy Thorpe - "Children of the Sun"

Paul Carrack (solo) - "I Need You"

Allanah Miles - "Black Velvet"

Jane Child - "Don't Wanna Fall In Love"

I'm sure a few of these artists had hits in other parts of the world, but in the areas of the US I have lived, that's about it for them.

^^^^^^
Can't speak for the rest, but Allanah Myles definitely had some other hits here in Canada, such as "Love Is" (which I think was also a minor hit in the U.S.), "Lover of Mine", and "Song Instead of a Kiss". All of them were pretty popular here, and I still hear them on the radio from time to time.

Level 42 were very popular here in their native UK. As well as "Something About You" I'm also more familiar with the likes of "Running In The Family" and "Lessons in Love", both copper-bottom 80s classics. :bolian:

"Sugar Sugar" - The Archies

"96 Tears" - ? and the Mystertians

"I'm Telling You Now" - Freddy and the Dreamers

"They're Coming to Take Me Away" - Napoleon XVII (or something like that)

"This Guy's in Love with You" - Herb Alpert (as a vocalist)

"Heat of the Moment" - Asia

"Don't Give Up on Me, Baby" - David Soul

Arcadia's Election Day was mentioned, but if you consider this group was made up of 3/5 of Duran Duran, maybe a little iffy for one hit wonderdom. The whole Arcadia album was pretty good, maybe #3 behind Rio & Seven And The Ragged Tiger.

And y'all gotta lay off Asia, Only Time Will Tell was #17 and Don't Cry was Top Ten, not #4 like Heat Of The Moment, but still. Those are the 3 songs of theirs I distinctly remember getting a lot of radio & MTV play in that era.

The problem mentioned, and proven by VH1's One Hit Wonder programs, is that this categorization is always American-centric and many of the groups listed have had many hits in other countries, especially when those groups are British or European and they managed to "break through" here in the US with one song.

Don't forget that OTHER members of Duran Duran at the time were involved with The Power Station (vocals by the late Robert Palmer)...however THEY had two hits around these parts ("Some Like It Hot" and a cover of T-Rex's "Bang a Gong (Get it On)".) Roger Taylor even played drums for both sub-groups' recordings. :)

"Lessons in Love" got airplay in the US as well. Many just don't remember it.
