Another Re-watching DS9 thread (spoilers)

Crossfire never gets any love. I think people can't see past Duncan Regehr's weak performance, which is of minimal importance, whereas Auberjonois is commanding.

I love Crossfire and Duncan Reghehr's performance in it was amazing! He was suave and charming and it actually made sense for Kira to be attracted to him.

In contrast, the Bareil actor and character were both horrible ! Bareil was like an emotionless wooden mannequin that [ barely! ] came to life.

I think at this point in time I just was not caring about Odo's and Kira's love life, which means on a whole I could not care for the episode.

When it comes to very character driven plots I have to care about the characters, it does not matter to me whether something is well acted or not I need to be able to feel the characters involved.

On the whole I liked the cast as a group, but I did not always care for specific characters, Kira being one of them.

I don't like Kira either, and I don't care about Kira's love life either.

But I love Odo and I care about Odo's love life. For me, Crossfire is a brilliant examination of Odo's character and that alone is why it is great.

The Heart of Stone episode has similar themes to Crossfire and perfectly exemplifies why I love Odo and his side of the relationship, but not Kira's. Visitor's acting in Heart of Stone is atrocious. But as always, Auberjonois' acting is masterful.

I was not myself a fan of the Odo-Kira romance at the time, but I was nevertheless interested in the characters. Odo's place in the conflict between the Federation and the Dominion was on ongoing and central topic. I am not sure how one could like DS9 without appreciating Odo's character in some way.

I could see that the episode could fall flat, but I do think Auberjonois and Shimerman were amazing. Visitor was charming, more convincing as the soldier falling in love than she was with Phlip Anglim (although that might have been due to his creepiness).

Beyond the performances, Crossfire feels like a statement concerning the nature of relationships in DS9 v. TNG. Indeed, it feels like the anti-"Perfect Mate:" foregoing personal relationships comes at a personal cost that cannot be salved with stoicism. The "we don't have sex/we're Starfleet" attitude that pervaded TNG and that was also present in VOY really had become silly. Increasingly, DS9 explored and celebrated those relationships. Auberjonois' performance really embodied that pain, exploring the pain of inaction while forcing him to remain functional.
