Yeah, and if I recall, the ship combat was quite difficult. I know there were a couple of scenarios I found quite frustrating.

There is some interesting modding/updating going on with the game which will hopefully make it more accessible and smoother to play on current PCs. Yes, it is primarily strategy/tactical based but there are missions that provide character and story!
