another "I hate Ben Lyons" thread

Man, I just really hate him. He's the only critic that has the following effect on me: both him and I can agree on whether or otr not a particular film is good, but listening to him talking about it makes me want to hate the film whether or not I hated or liked it to begin with. He sounds so condescending or cloying whenever he speaks about a film. If there is something notable about a film, he makes sure you know it, in a way that's more unnerving than just simply knowing it. In other words, take the new film Observe and Report. Mostcritics are bound to mention the surface similarities in its premise with Paul Blart Mall Cop, while some critics will try to avoiid it. You know that Lyon's will not only mention it, but go out of his way to say it, or anything else that's cliche that you'd expect him to say in a review. He is really annoying and almsot makes me hate movies more when watching him, where as Ebert or Siskel would really fascinate me with the art of filmmaking with their generous bits of expertise and passion that they'd bring to the table. This guy is all about sound bytes and marketing slogans.

He's considered the ultimate movie critic "quote whore." Like father like son, I suppose.

But he's soooooo cute.:rommie:

Love the guy. Very dumb and very cute. Mank says some interesting things tho. I mainly just watch that show for movie clips and make up my own damn mind.

I caught some of that show this weekend. They were discussing "Grey Gardens," and I can't count the number of times Ben Lyons kept talking about how excited Drew Barrymore was about the role, and what she said in interviews, and how good all the actors were in OTHER films they've done. Poor Ben Mankiewicz kept trying to steer the conversation back to the actual FILM they were supposed to be reviewing, and what its particular flaws were.

Ben Lyons just comes off as an incredible, ass-kissing putz. I just want to bitch slap him and send him to film school without any supper.

I just spit out my drink in laughter!

So Temis thinks he's "very cute" ... auntiehill wants to spank him.

I had to do a google search to figure out who the heck he was. Turns out he's the ass-kissing schmuck who replaced Ebert on his own show. He's about 12 years old and doesn't actually review films; instead, he gives sound bites ready-made for adding to promotional posters and commercials.

Sounds like a douche to me.

Well, in all fairness, Ebert was never coming back to TV---ever.

However, Lyons really is a douche. Listening to him attempt to "review" a film is just embarrassing. There are so many other qualified and respected film critics; how in the hell did this monumental putz end up with this gig?

Hey, if anyone cares, there will be an announcement soon of a new movie review show with Richard Roeper and Michael Phillips that Roger Ebert will have some involvement with.

VERY good news! I've been waiting since last fall for them to announce their new project.

I forgot to add that Ebert mentioned that this show will also involve Christy Lemire of the Associated Press. A three-critic show, perhaps?
