Announcing STAR TREK: DTI and other CLB news

I always got the impression the various Trekkers themselves didn't really understand time-travel and how everything works ("for all you know, we could be in an alternate timeline right now" etc.)

Yeah, time travel does have a way of happening to amateurs. Which is bound to be frustrating as hell to the people who actually make a career out of it.

Tell me about it

And I know what Lucsly & Dulmur's first names are going to be, but I'm not telling.

Do they match the names they're given in the very recently released The Needs of the Many?

Since I haven't read that book, I profoundly doubt it. What were they called there?

Don't have it handy at the moment, but it's Wolf Dulmer (heh), and I cannot recall Lucsley's first name for the life of me. Might be Adam. Have to check when I get home.

I'm definitely not going for X-Files in-jokes. The surnames are in-jokey enough, and are really the only connection the characters have to Mulder and Scully. And I need to flesh these two out into lead characters, make them more than just walking jokes.

(hopefully in an integral fashion that doesn't feel like a continuity lecture).

Since you've got that at the forefront of your mind I'm confident it won't come across as a Temporal Mechanics text book. :techman:

Well, given the subject matter and the characters involved, I think a certain amount of exposition-heavy scenes will be unavoidable,

Ahem.

When I first read about this, and thinking about how Trek Time Travel was about to get all scienced up, it just reminded me of how much the Trek XI forum made me wish the Reeves-Stevens's bit in "Millennium" about Feynman Curves and why you always had to travel back to your home era through the same method that you used to leave was in an episode. It fit in with most everything, and it would shut up all those "Well, why didn't Spock Prime go back in time to save Vulcan?" threads.

It did also explain why they always travelled back to the future by the same means, though. I can see now, dramaturgically, why you wouldn't, say, slingshot around the sun at the end of "First Contact" after going through a borg time-portal at the beginning, but as a fan, it was always a little weird.

^There is at least one canonical exception to the pattern of making temporal round trips through the same means both ways: in "Shockwave," Archer was brought into the future by Daniels but travelled back through vaguely explained means involving Silik's time-communication link with Future Guy.

That's a tad off. The device they used to bring Archer back was retrieved from Daniels quarters by Lt. Reed. Shockwave II was just on HDNet on Monday. :D

Well... it looks like it may have been the combination of the two.

I for one welcome our new Department of Temporal Investigators...

Seriously though, I'm looking forward to seeing Christopher's take on Time Travel in Trek.

Will the Guardian of Forever be featured and/or mentioned at all?

If so, remember to notify Harlan to avoid all the yelling.

To avoid any legal entanglements, the Federation will be using a new time portal called the Custodian of Always, which is in the shape of a large stone funnel cake.

(Yes, April Fool's Day was yesterday, but this joke has travelled through time.)

It's nice to know the Guardian won't be getting lonely with the Custodian around to hang out with and shoot the temporal oscillations and whatnot. :D

Looking forward to this when it comes down the pipe.
