Announcing STAR TREK: DTI and other CLB news

Christopher has pretty much made a mountain out of a mole hill in his replies.

Wow. Christopher doesn't need anyone to defend him, but I'm going to anyway. I read his responses as clearly saying (well before he outright said it) that he felt unable to comment on the editorial situation. How the heck is that making a mountain out of a molehill? A straight answer would have violated his integrity (either through a lie, or through giving away information that he was not authorized to give). So he did the next best thing - didn't give any answer, and made it clear he couldn't. So Allyn pushed Christopher. And round and round we go.

If you think that Christopher built any mountains, you may want to re-read this thread, and check your assumptions.

I did read it, I saw what Christopher wrote thank you very much and I'm sure if he wanted to comment on what I said, he could have done, he has demonstrated time and again when he wants to fight a battle and times when he'll pick his ball up, go home and call foul - like many, including I do from time to time. Christopher doesn't need defending, he'll happily do it himself and you starting your post like that really was amusing.

Anyway, in my opinion, Christopher made a mountain out of a mole hill, or better yet, a storm in a tea cup. And to be honest, I think it's pretty damn important to know who is at the helm of the good ship Trek Lit given how rough the waters have been over the last couple of years.

The Journalist and Trek fan in me is saying that we have a "right" to know who is editing the Trek line,

No you don't. It's a private company making TV show tie-in novels; it's not a government agency or public office. Who is or is not editing Star Trek books is none of our business if Pocket doesn't want it to be our business.

Oh lol. I guess we should also send "Thank You" notes to Pocket because they kindly let us know who wrote the book.

That isn't a necessity. Off the top of my head, "Primary Colors" and the "Castle" novels were published anonymously, which is obviously much more palatable than if, say, the Mayor of New York was anonymous, something more within the purview of the people's right to know.

Indeed, there was a Star Trek tale in the Prophecy and Change anthology that was credited to "Anonymous".

So... who wants cake?

Ooh, I want cake!

[Homer] Mmmmmm, cake......[/Homer]

No. It's a business -- the only thing you owe them is the cover price to purchase the book. And the only thing they owe you is a book good enough to be worth that cover price.

And, no, you don't have any right to know who wrote a book if the author doesn't want you to know. That's why pseudonyms and "Anonymous" credits exist.

Y'know, Christopher could've ended the whole thing by just saying, "Sorry, I'm not at liberty to say one way or the other at the present time."

I think this is how Watergate started...

Christopher, I will apologize now but this is the only way to end this pointless argument.

If you will follow this link, you will see that Jaime Costas is longer listed on the site (they seemed to have removed her section because there's a blank bit at the bottom of the page) and Jennifer Heddle is now listed as a senior editor. She was previously listed as an editor like Ed Schlesinger when I looked a few months ago.

Pocket might not want to say anything just yet, but whoever is keeping up the website made it easy for me to look. It took a few seconds.

Make of it what you will.

^ You can also see who's the current Star Trek editor on that site if you connect the dots.

No need to apologize to me, BrotherBenny. I'm not actively trying to keep any secrets. I'm just not in a position to break news on behalf of Pocket Books, so I can't answer any staffing questions that haven't been answered by more official sources.

The galley pages for DTI: Watching the Clock arrived a little while ago (and judging from the stench on the envelope, the UPS driver must be a chain smoker — icchhh!). It’s a hefty pile of pages. It looks as if the final book is going to be just about 500 pages long.

This is my first chance to see the typesetting being used for the chapter and scene headings and so forth, and it looks pretty good. I hope it’s not long before I get to see the final cover.

^ Damn, we've got some big ones on the way; this and Indistinguishable From Magic are both long.
