Why this character and performance are not being celebrated for ALL of the smart / dumb reasons is absolutely beyond me.
  • The Force is Female
  • There are no good parts for women / There are no good parts for women in sci-fi / There are no good parts for women in Star Wars
  • We hate Mary Sues (Hey look! She's NOT one!)
  • The fanboys will never accept strong women - except this one. And probably a bunch of other ones. But you know what I mean.
  • I'll see your Bechdel test and raise you THIS
It's almost like these people don't really buy into any of this.

OMG I have forgotten how gorgeous this show is. I have lived in Star Wars in my head for almost 50 years now. (Along with that OTHER sci-fi series.) And this has never felt more real to me. (I have to admit, the fanboy in me would love to see the Millenium Falcon with this cinematography. But then again, I've seen the Millenium Falcon in real life.)

I thought maybe I was just caught up in the immediacy of the episodes when I watched it for the first time, and it wouldn't mean that much over time. Nope. Niamos in the wedding scene still makes me cry. She is so broken.

Seriously: She gets the big speeches and the huge flourishes. The GO FOR THE OSCAR (er, EMMY) moments.

But she also gets the moments that are all in her head. There are parts of her performance where someone else gets the speech and she moves a few muscles in her face to react. Because if she really reacts she is literally dead. But it hits the audience like a tidal wave.

My favorite moment in the first season was when she realized she was going to have to arrange the marriage for her daughter. That's where this show could go. Yikes.

As I will be mumbling in the rest home: When they announced they were doing a prequel show about the secondary lead from Rogue One and people said "Who wants that?" I said "I DO!" And when they said it would feature Genevieve O'Reilly's Mon Mothma as a Senator in the time before the Death Star I said "AND I WANT IT NOW."

I had no idea.
