To be accurate, CBS cancelled it, now NBC is picking it up. Likely a reflection of the fact it actually did fairly decent ratings. Indeed, when its cancellation was announced it was said to be the highest rated cancelled show (on any network) this season.Wow, that was fast. They cancel it and just a month or two later, it's uncancelled. I guess they realized they don't have anything else to air.
There's also probably some behind-the-scenes corporate stuff involved as well. To date, the show was a co-production of CBS Studios (which was also the original series' network) and Universal Television (which produced the original show), and new Magnum was being distributed internationally by NBCUniversal, so it only makes sense to bring the show over to NBC if CBS is done with it. Probably some sweet tax incentives from the state, too.

I though it was weird hat they kept jaunting to the ship, and sad that the ship wasn't TIM and excited that Connie Booth from Faulty Towers was was still hot.
