And Star Trek V failed because...

Both Shaw and Maurice in the posts right above yours, and several others in this thread, have offered rational explanations as to why this movie is a piece of garbage. Nobody is "hating just to hate."

Do you think
There is nothing about TTF that is redeemable... at all!
is a rational criticism?

Anyway, one thing that bugs me is comments like "Shatner couldn't direct traffic". TFF has the obvious script and budget problems discussed above, but I think Shat has a stronger visual sense than Nimoy did with TSFS (who improved with the admittedly more earth-bound TVH). He was one of many directors who mistakenly think they are also writers.

You mean you know who I am? I'm impressed.

And perhaps I did come off as a bit asshole-ish in my post. I apologize. Although it would have been nice if your post had some actual substance to it if you were going to requote a gigantic post above it, is all. ;)

Oh, and my sig is fucking hilarious. You clearly must have something wrong with your sense of humor if you don't think that. ;p

I gotta agree about the sig. It is pretty fucking hilarious and made me laugh out loud. It reminded me of the pic some someone sent me that said "How to offend 4 nerds at once" and had a picture of picard with the quote

"Use the force Harry"
-Gandalf

:vulcan:

Dukhat: I was making a little joke, sir.
EnriqueH: Extremely little, Ensign.

Anyway, Dukhat, I'm glad you relaxed a little. I'll be honest: I thought you overreacted, but no hard feelings.

But I still say that sig SUCKS.

Well, not that individual sentence, no. But just posting that once sentence while not posting the rest of the post is kinda taking that sentence out of context. In context, Shaw was clearly just using hyperbole in a humorous manner.

In context I think he was being quite serious, as he says the same thing in several different ways.

Apologies for talking about you rather than to you, Shaw! I was one of those who liked your new pics in the photoshop thread.

Here is the thing, we never got the TOS movie we should have... and I don't think we are going to any time in the near future. To date the best TOS movie isn't even a Trek film at all... it is Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. The story plays like an extended TOS episode and holds the audience's interest even if you know nothing about the main characters.
THIS(!) is indeed THE TRUTH! :techman:

Wait. I'm confused. I thought Galaxy Quest was the best Trek movie?

Or was that Forbidden Planet? :)

Galaxy Quest was a spoof of Trek and Trek fandom. And as much as I like Forbidden Planet and it does offer a basic template for Star Trek I don't consider it as good as some of the best TOS episodes.

Master and Commander put me to sleep.

I knew there was a reason I avoided it.

Besides, Russell Crowe bores me. I think the only movie he ever did that is worthy of repeat viewings is L.A. Confidential.

Insider was average, Gladiator is entertaining but overrated, Proof of Life sucked, Beautiful Mind was ok for a one time viewing, and I can't even remember anything he did after that except Man of Steel, which sucked ass.

Well I'd say if you happen to have an interest in naval history of that time period you'd probably love it and watch it several times because I do think it is well done and seems pretty accurate.

But to the average filmgoer who was expecting ships exchanging cannon fire for 90 minutes.....Yeah I could see where it would be a major drag.

And I agree with whoever said Russell Crowe is overrated. Gladiator is a great film, but not because of him, in fact I think most of the other major characters are far more interesting than he is. He was good in LA Con. But had a great cast around him too, not like he carried the film on his own. A beautiful mind is overrated IMHO and everything else I've seen him in sucks.

When I read the back story of TMP and Phase II and all of Roddenberry's ideas for movies, I sometimes am grateful for the films we received. Despite being more removed from TOS, the films still did a lot with the characters, and explored some interesting sides of them, if taking a different point of view.

The only way that it could have been better, to me, is if the film franchise had been started earlier, rather than when the cast was older. That way we could have some of the more energetic romps by the crew, without a theme of them retiring soon. I would prefer to see a film based upon their second 5 year mission.

Also, Master and Commander is a fun film, accurate and interesting and overly long. I can understand why it has been considered for insomnia cures. Still like Russel Crowe in Gladiator though :)

Agreed on your first sentence. I also do regret we didn't see more of Kirk and company in their primes. To me, that's what makes the Abrams films exciting, even if our heroes are a bit raw at this point. There is at least an energy to the characters now that hasn't existed since TOS.

Thank you. I agree :)

If there was no Shatner, there would be no Kirk. If there had been no Kirk, Star Trek might never have made it to TV in the first place.
Kirk without Shatner is Pike. And we know how that turned out.

Pike had one episode to give us. I really am not certain how Pike would have continued on, but we can't give a good evaluation because we have more of Shatner and less of Hunter.

I have always wondered what a Pike series would have been like as is darker, more brooding sense and introspection would have been interesting, at least to me.

In any case, I'm not sure it is a fair evaluation at this point.
