An idea about the Master

Joe Washington

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Whenever the Master returns, I think he should undergo a regeneration before his return on the show and that the newly regenerated Master should be someone who's trying to save the Doctor from his goody-two-shoe life the way the Doctor has been trying to save the Master from his dark path. Maybe the new Master can be someone who embrace the notion of having a companion like the Doctor instead of rejecting it the way the previous Master was doing. But for the Doctor to be his companion, it has to be on his terms which the Doctor will never agree with because it would mean going aganist everything he stands for.

In my opinion, the Doctor/Master relationship should change (not completely) to keep things fresh on the show. What do you think of my idea?

Not bad actually. I still prefer the idea of a Master who's at the lower end of evil (in the same way some Doctor's are grumpier than others) and is more of an anti-Hero, it could be quite tragic because both he and the Doctor would know that he'd likely revert to type next regeneration...

I'd like Simm to return, even if he regenned at the end of the episode.

Hell, I'm still disappointed The Master didn't become The Doctor's companion at the end of "Last of the Time Lords."

The Master did tempt him a bit during the stand-off in EOT.

Technically the Master has had companions before-Kamelion, Lee and of course, Lucy.

It would be amusing to see the two of them forced to travel/work together via some kind of "Wedlock" scenario (look it up)

I really think they should keep the door shut on the Master. EOT had its flaws, but it brought The Master full circle. And in the end, he realized who he was and why he had chosen the path he did. In the end after The Doctor once again showed mercy, he decided to sacrifice himself for a greater good. IMHO, Rose was somewhat ruined when they brought her back, and The Master would really be ruined if they bring him back.

I suspect that we'll see the Master back and newly regenerated. I like the fan theory that the Time Lord Council gave him a new set of regenerations when they resurrected him to fight in the Time War. As for the Master embracing the Doctor as a companion...the two of them were best friends who later devolved into bitter enemies. The Doctor showed great compassion towards him in the end of "The Last of the Time Lords" begged him to regenerate it but the Master wouldn't because he knew it would cause the Doctor pain if he died. They'll always be enemies. The closest they've been to friends is when the Master hid in his Professor Yana form, that's the only way I can see them being friends. As for The Doctor having a "goody two shoes life" I hardly consider someone who's universal nickname is the 'Oncoming Storm' to be someone who has a good two shoes life.

Ironically that was the departure idea for the original Master in 1973, before Roger Delgado died in tragic circumstances.

What do you think of my idea?

I think it's actually a really good idea. Certainly better than a lot of the harebrained stuff that fans often suggest.

I would have thought, though, that the Master regenerating is a given. I'm pretty sure that will happen on his next appearance, or soon after.

The Master as a companion though is a fine idea, though not entirely without precedent. In The Scream of the Shalka the Master's consciousness is reduced to a hologram which inhabits the TARDIS and serves the Doctor as a companion.

Speaking of harebrained ideas; has anyone in the production of the show ever suggested having a cyberman as a companion? I think that could have worked (though I don't see it working with the current cyberman design for some reason). I guess Star Trek kind of already did this with 7 of 9, to a certain extent, but it's a thought.

My current theory is that when the Master returns, he will have regenerated and will be female. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

I'm still lamenting the fact that Derek Jacobi was the Master for all of 5 minutes. I just can't get past that - to me it was a shocking tease and an incredible waste of good talent..

Though for me (and I know I am probably in the minority here), those 5 minutes were better than the entirety of John Simm's stint as the Master...

As much as I hate to say it, I'd vote for letting him stay dead. Having him go out a hero is probably the best way to say goodbye to the character.

Bring back the Rani instead! ;)

Not sure about dead, but I definitely think the Master should stay evil. At least *someone* should. If there's no evil, then there's also no good, and that would not...be good. :D

No, you got it wrong. I don't want the Master to turn good. I just want his motivation to change and have more depth. Maybe after disappearing with the Time Lords, he gets locked up somewhere that has him thinking about being alone and once he got out of there, he believes the only person he can hang with who can match his intellect and lifespan is the Doctor so he goes to great, sometimes terrifying lengths to get the Doctor to be his best friend for life. But he refuses to step down from his hunger for power and his obsessive need to dominate the Universe. So that would make the Doctor/Master relationship more complicated and interesting to explore.

Excuse me, but what's this notion of the Master turning good, or going out a hero?

Strikes me his actions at the end of TEOT2 were more about him realising he hated Rassilon and the timelords way more than he hated the Doctor. He didn't do what he did out of kindness of charity, it was rage and revenge!

Joe I kind of understand what you're getting at...but your stretching your logic regarding your proposal in my opinion. Why would the Master go to such lengths to befriend the Doctor? They were already best friends. Your proposal just doesn't make sense.
