American Horror Story Hotel - Discussion

Okay, I watched the first three episodes this week.

I'm liking it so far. It's pretty dang dark and creepy, and I've LOVED many of the musical selections.

Wondering where they're going to go next. They've used up quite a few of the more common horror-related tropes:

  • Season 1: Haunted House
  • Season 2: Insane Asylum
  • Season 3: Witches' Coven/Voodoo in New Orleans
  • Season 4: Carnival Freak Show
  • Season 5: Haunted Hotel/Vampires
My guess is they might do a futuristic sci-fi thing next. Since there are clear and not-so-clear connections between the seasons, incidents and characters, they may possibly want to tie it into the alien presence shown in S2. The original Alien movie proved it can be done well. The show-runners of this show could pull it off easily enough.

Me too. I got tired of last year's freak show angle. The haunted hotel seems far better suited for the format.

The blood & gore has risen to almost humorously unbelievable levels that would make Sam Peckinpah blush.

I'll admit that Matt Bomer is pretty much the only reason I want to watch. Though I am curious to see how Gaga is as an actress as well.
I’m watching for Matt Bomer as well ;) Haven’t seen any previous seasons of this show, except of the one episode last year where he guest starred in (which didn’t make me want to seek out the rest).
But after the pilot this season, I also was really intrigued about how all the stories will come together, which is good, as it would get pretty boring just waiting for the Donovan scenes I guess. It is a great ensemble cast. Plus I love the old fashioned hotel, the whole scenery and costumes.

And I guess Matt wanted something as far away from Neal Caffrey as possible. Which makes sense.

Are you still watching each week?

Quick question: after Alex and Liz emptied the pool of coffins, and she went down with John and they found it empty, there was a scene of her and Liz breaking glass. What was that? Did they break the coffins? I don't get it.

How weird that John took baby Bartholomew home with him. And yet the only repercussion was that Scarlett now thinks he's crazy too.

The Countess has been a pretty cool character for the first few episodes (other than, you know, when she kills people and drinks their blood), but in this episode, she seemed to show a much more evil side. While Alex seems to have taken a much more motherly role around the hotel, helping wherever she was needed. I almost wonder if Alex might replace the Countess at the end of the series. She seems like the type that would treat all residents with love.

Yes it looked to me like they were breaking the coffins. Getting rid of the evidence, in case he went looking for them elsewhere. Pushing John further down the madness trail.

The forces are definitely gathering against the Countess. Very few left on her side. Alex is definitely not treating her husband or daughter "with love". :p

My questions are: was there any reason for Wittrock to play Valentino too? Is there going to be some connection?

As for poor John, what's with the girl in the psych ward? That didn't seem realistic to me. Is he hallucinating that? Is he hallucinating the whole thing? Is he the killer?

I thought this season started off a little jerky, but I think it's hit a nice stride now.

I'm not familiar with your military friend and his fondness for poultry...

I totally approved of that final episode. It had some nice little wrap-ups for just about everybody.
