According to a report in Entertainment Weekly the brief introduction of Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson is being scrapped from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. She'll now be introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

But now Marc Webb seems to have decided that it's best to hold off on introucing MJ until part three. Woodley responded to the story saying, "Of course I'm bummed. But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason. Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film."

The reason the rumor of shailene being recast is she's going to be in her version of "the hunger games" called "Divergent"

She's getting cut from ASM 2 because it might be too crowded or just doesn't fit the story

If she can't squeeze in ASM 3 then she'll be recast

We might never even see her scenes and a new MJ will be in ASM 3 and no one will know about Shailenes MJ

Lionsgate and Fox coordinated shooting schedules, with Fox pushing the shoot for DOFP back a bit, to make sure Jennifer Lawrence could do both. Sony is looking to crank out Spider-Man films at a very fast pace, leaving little wiggle room for coordination with another franchise.

Of course that may just be a convenient excuse for any recasting. Who knows.
