Amanda

"I thought Ryder sucked as Amanda and sadly felt a sense of relief when the planet swallowed her up."

I was very nervous when I heard she had been cast. However, I LOVED the scene between her and Quinto. She did an amazing job in this scene.
I was genuinely shocked and moved when they killed her off.

There was a scene with her, Sarek and Spock as a baby (which made it into several TV spots and a trailer).

And it really, really pissed me off that it wasn't in the movie.

DON'T promote something in TV spots/trailers if it's not going to be part of the damned movie. That's false advertising.

That has become pretty standard practice in the movie business these days.

Winona Ryder did a great job in my opinion. Dignified yet soft. A human heart wrapped in vulcan clothes.

I agree. I was quite surprised by her performance. My parents also had no idea it was her. They saw Winona Ryder's name in the credits at the end were like, "When was she in the movie?"

My mom did the same. At the end of the movie she saw the credits and said "where was Winona Ryder?" I said, "she played Amanda." My mom said "no way! I didn't think that was her!" so I'm betting a lot more people felt the same way. Then again, my mom also has a crush on Eric Bana and said he had the best part in the movie as indicated in our post Trek XI conversation:

"That Eric Bana is a sexy, sexy man. I'd let him capture me onboard the Narada."
"Mom, for the love of God, don't say things like that!"

Well, with Amanda and most of Vulcan dead, I figure this version of Sarek and Spock should be a bit tighter than they were in the other lifetime.

And Amanda won't be guilt-trippin' Spock and smacking his face as in Journey to Babel.

And maybe T'Pring and S'tonn are gone too, so Spock won't have to kill Kirk on that particular occasion.

What i mean is caught in a black hole when she was being transported who's to say she did not live , like a tasha yar type sceanrio

The role of Amanda Grayson was originally created by Miss Jane Wyatt.
She brought class, elegance, and a depth of emotion to the character
of Spock's Mother, which is far beyond the limited abitlities of the talentless,
Winona Ryder.

It is not at all surprising that this "sticky-fingered" shoplifter
had her scenes cut... quite simply, she is a poor imitation of the original.
Ms. Ryder is absolutely unworthy of the role and was completely miscast!

NO NO NO please tell us how you really feel ;) Spocks Mom never had that many scenes in any episode or film to bring any depth to any performance.

while I disagree that Winona Ryder was "horrible" in the role (she wasn't on long enough to show much depth), you had to have missed Journey to Babel in TOS. Jane Wyatt was awesome in that episode. to this day, it's one of my favorite TOS episodes because of her powerful performance in it.

Ryder was terrific as Amanda. There didn't need to be more scenes with her precisely because her acting was so powerful in the few lines she had the bond between Spock and her was manifest.

It would have been a mistake to show a scene with Spock's birth. It would have been too obvious a parallel with Kirk's birth, and would not have given new information.

I disagree with that-- instead it would have proved a stark contrast to the violence surrounding Kirk's birth, and would have added more poignancy to Amanda's death.

I'd have to agree with rbnn here. showing Spock's birth would have been too pat, too anticlimactic. one birth -- powerful and heartwrenching -- was enough. we didn't need to see another.

No! No no no no!

What's good about the film is precisely this: it does not beat viewers over the head with the obvious. Can't just one film this summer not have to belabor and make manifest every single plot point? It's just what makes this film great, all the hidden forces and relationships that are not express but whose scope and power instead must be deduced and inferred from slight but discrete clues: a misting of the eyes, a change in posture, a break in a voice.

The profound intensity of the love between Spock and Amanda was there to be found in the film, maybe not on first viewing, but on repeated viewings. Just look at their eyes in the two scenes between them. Or look at the one thing that is able to break Spock's control.

All that needs to be said about Spock and Amanda is said in Quinto's eyes.

Agreed. She summed up everything about Spock's human side with great dignity and grace. Wonderful woman.
