Am I the only one who would like to see a reboot of "Weeekend at Bernie's?"

A Porky's remake with a "body positive" shower scene perhaps?

An Airplane! Remake would have to cut out all the ethnic stereotype jokes, the "do you like movies with Gladiators" scene, and perhaps the scene where everyone who listens to Robert Hays committs suicide out of boredom.

My point wasn't that you can't remake 80's comedies or do college sex comedies today- it was that some of those films represent an age gone by in what the public will accept. I just think that is really interesting since movies are somewhat of a snapshot of the period in which they were produced. Some of those movies can be updated for the times, some cannot. Maybe that's a good thing.

Right now the comedy market is pretty saturated with the opposite, conversational political humor that a lot of people are getting tired of.

The fraternity kind of humor would be more difficult to modernize, I agree, but it's not like immature sex humor is gone from today's comedies. It'd just have to look more like the kind you see in things like Superbad or The Hangover.

I agree. I do think diversity though would be important. It can't just be a bunch of white guys having fun at everyone's expense. Everyone has to sort of be able to get into the raunchy stuff and misbehave. I do think it's something that would or will be easier once Trump is gone. It's like trying to do a disaster movie were famous landmarks are destroyed after 9/11. Sometimes it takes time before you can start screwing over the world again and we are kind of back their now seeing as how ever 5 minutes you got another post-apocoloptic movie or show.

While you still have some raunch I think people do get tired of it being tagged with a lesson as opposed to something more character oriented. The movies got to have heart because that's always been the line between something feeling fun raunchy as opposed to just gross and offensive. Basically you need characters who despite what they are doing underneath have a heart of gold. Which to fair is how it's often been. There is the misconception that jocks were the heroes in the 80's but that was only in brawny action movies. Jocks and clueless old people were always the bad guys in those older movies unless we are talking about the man child movies which came later in the 90's and early 2000's. Stuff that Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller would do. The bad guys in those movies were often modern sensibilities or someone who just a all around asshole or sometimes a fellow man child who didn't have a heart of gold like the hero.

I like modern sarcastic comedy, but it’d be nice to take a break from it.

I wouldn't saw they are god awful. Well some of them are but bad movies happen all the time. I do feel though they have lost of some of the edge and bite they use to have. It's hard to push the envelope when it seems like they have a table length of restrictions over things that you can do and can't do. You still get good stuff when you have talented writers and comedians but it's kind of like TNG. All those self imposed rules means you have to find away to work around the rules to be funny but it also means that even when it does work you feel like it's not really as great as could be if only the artist had more creative freedom.

Y'know, I wish Trump was as powerful and omnipresent as some of his detractors keep making him out to be. He could have just handwaved the wall into existence on his first day.

On topic, though, he has nothing to do with why we don't have comedies like Weekend at Bernie's anymore. Hollywood isn't making those kind of movies anymore for the same reason Hollywood doesn't make anything: there's no return on the investment. Nowadays you either go for the cash grab or the accolades, and a movie like Bernie's won't make Marvel Studios money and it won't win any Oscars. It's especially true about the money. If any studio thought it could print money by remaking Bernie's it would already be in development, Trump be damned, raunchiness be damned, diversity be damned.

That said, do I want to see it remade? Hell no! Bernie's was a fantastic comedy for its time, and I like it just as it is. It doesn't need to be modernized, improved, made hip or ironic or snarky or (god forbid) made more logical by somehow trying to explain how two fools managed to fool an entire beach into thinking some dead guy is still alive.

Modern comedies aren't awful, they just tend to be very snarky, deadpan and/or political. There's nothing wrong with that, but when it's the only style you get you hunger for something else.

^Yes, exactly. Oh, one could actually argue that the raunchy teen comedy really haven't changed much, if at all. They just aren't really in the classroom anymore and have changed locations. They could in some cases, be even raunchier than what was available in the 80's. Movies with Unrated editions and movies with Redband trailers for instance.

One problem is the way movies are going it's hard to get anything it seems these days other than a tentpole franchise movie,usually from a comic book character or various reboots or remakes, cheap to make horror movies and then the art house films that are going for Oscars or some new talent trying to get noticed. Raunchy comedies I feel will make a comeback but like most things it will be on a place like Netflix or some other place like it. That's were the movies of old that no longer fit I suppose will get made.

Yep, I agree. And while I like tentpole movies as much as anyone, I do like to have something different and more substantial from time to time. It's all about variety.

Perhaps - IF they keep it in the style of Airplane! and Police Squad!, where the main character ISN'T dumb - just oblivious, and the ultimate straight man. That's what made characters like Dr. Rumack and Frank Drebin funny - they were intelligent, and good at their jobs, but they never actually did anything funny. They just reacted to it.

I mean, the Naked Gun movies were funny as well, just IMHO not as much. And they totally ruined the character of Drebin by making him the idiot.

I feel the best version of these old Airplane,Naked Gun movies right now is the tv show, "Angie Tribecka" on TBS. I find the show to be very funny.
