Am I the only one who didn't like the trailer?

The "pipes" I'm talking about are the big bulging whatsises on the front ends of the nacelles that look like someone said, "we need to trick these babies out with some big hunks of chrome". The original Enterprise had NOTHING like that. I don't like the look of them. Big deal. It's my cross to bear.

Scotty DID have comedic moments in the original series. One of the reasons they WERE so funny was because he was generally a pretty grim guy. In those instances, it seemed an ASPECT of the character's personality rather than ALL he was about. Like I said in an earlier post RE Scotty, his comedic moments in TOS sparkled all the brighter BECAUSE he was so straight most of the time. "Trouble with Tribbles" was a flat-out comedy episode and, while I don't think the characters were wildly off kilter, I also don't believe it should be the standard by which the personalities of those character should be judged. Not sure "I, Mudd" would be a good standard either, enjoyable though it was.

McCoy, like I said, I can make no comment at all about from the trailer. Who knows?

I didn't care much for the trailer--what's the big deal? I'm LESS excited to see the film than I was before seeing the trailer. Tells me the trailer didn't do it's job--make me WANT to see the movie. Others feel differently and I say, more power to them. That's the wonderful thing about art--it's subjective. There IS no "right" or "wrong".

I agree with your reservations about this new Trek based upon the trailer. I find it quite insightful that you have mentioned what my 14 & 16 YO sons have said about the trailer. They both expressed reservations about it's potential based upon the fact that so many kids their ages HATE Trek that they may not be sold on it no matter how they try to appeal. Kids their ages make fun of Trekkers and say the usual - "They have no life" or "For losers, geeks and nerds" or "They do weird stuff like speak Klingonese to eachother". They also said that this trailer is so obviously trying to appeal to their ages that it's a turn-off. Teens are turned off by adults thinking they know what they like and thinking they understand their generation. Abrhams should have stuck with bringing back Trek as closely to TOS was as he could. It appealed because it had great characters, stories, interactions, excitement etc NOT because teens like boobies, a captains who can get laid easily, fast cars, a defiant bad ass rebel who shows up everybody. It was simply good and would have appealed on its own merit without simplistic devices to gather an audience.

Of course the trailer looks exciting and wild to my kids but there is lots of competition from movies out there that are also exciting and fun. Trek is supposed to be different in its own unique way. The uniqueness that Trek, and in particular TOS Trek had, might have been due to its characters and their interactions. Here is where I fear the movie may miss the mark. The characters seem too different than those that made it click years ago.

I'm beginning to feel that TOS was a product of its time, that has universal and lasting appeal. But what was happening in that era cannot obtained again. Too much has changed in both the real world and the Trek world.

I will probably still see this movie, but I don't have high expectations. My teen-aged sons are plus-minus as well.

I thought it was pretty cool, but it still feels like sacrilege watching other actors portraying the original crew. I dunno. What makes me more skeptical than anything is that it's written by the same guys who wrote "Transformers." I'll give it a chance.

You do know Transfomers was a success and garnered a sequel which just wrapped shooting and is heading into Post production... So I mean if it's as "bad" as Transformers then well damn.. Wait I liked Transformers... Except for the Hacker Sup-plot.

Teens are pretentions and when they say stuff like Chillaxin they have no ground to stand on when it comes to doing weird stuff.

I just had this type of conversation with my GF's 16 year old.

Sarah: Klingon is a strange language

Me; This comeing from the girl who calls her friends her Home Skillet Biscuit.

Sarah: But that's cool...

Me; Only to you, sweetie.
