Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype?

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

While California is bankrupt and laying off people, millions of dollars go down the tube to close freeways and prepare for the funeral.

This is true, but my guess is that the level of coverage that it does not just because of Jackson's status, but because so many people want to hear about something--anything--other than how shitty things are right now. They all seem to be taking a nostalgia trip with Jackson, for good or ill.

Things will still be shitty next week.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

Yeah, that may be true but right now I would cut off my own arm to go back to "shitty". Shitty would be preferable.

I am sick to bloody death of hearing about the memorial service. He was a freakish, deformed pop singer, who, while being a talented performer, was NOT the greatest singer, nor the greatest human being. He was a crazy nutjob obsessed with little boys and was probably stoned out of his sick little mind for the last few years of his life.

He's dead. OK, I got it. I don't need the news to keep telling me he's still dead. And it is completely beyond me why they are making this such a HUGE story. But then, I never understood the Elvis hype, either.

Can we move on now to more important things, like, you know, actual NEWS?

QFT.

Ps, how are the Iranians doing?

Yes. QFT.

When I turn on the computer, tele or open a newspaper, I would like to know what important is happening in the world rather than having to dig for it through the useless garbage.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

I'm not into it much at all. I never really listen to Michael Jackson music to relax or anything-- but I recognize the skill and even genius with which he performed. Beyond that, he had a bizarre and questionable adulthood. I definitely didn't expect people to react like somebody modern and relevant had just been assassinated.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

No really! -He made a lot of fancy (perhaps even great) contemporary pop music back when I wasn't even interested in pop music any more, Why would I be more than superficially interested in his death now -decades later?

This thread is for people with a similar sentiment.

Luckily I have a good collection of other stuff to watch on my monitors these days when the Sauergurkenzeit is over us and every single channel of tv is filled with the death of the king of pop.

What are you watching instead of live television?

Am I the only one that wants to hit 'Madonna' for getting it wrong? -MJ wasn't "The King" - he was "The King of Pop" - the other title is reserved for the one and only: ELVIS!

Your thoughts please.

I agree

I grew up during the 80's, so I grew up with his music, yeah, it was great, classic stuff.

But honestly, they treat him like a King died here, so much news and stuff about it, I get it, he died, it is tragic, but honestly 24/7? I can't turn on the TV without seeing him on every news channel. He is just a man who made great music, there are lots of men that make great music.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

I just get a little sick of his being compared to Elvis and the Beatles.

If you want to talk about name recognition and sales then yes.

If you are talking about talent and creativity...frankly the man isn't fit to shine Elvis or JL's shoes.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

I really liked Michael, but he wasnt all that to me that I am sad because he is dead. I think the coverage is overkill. I had more sadness over Bernie Mac than Michael because I really enjoyed Bernie Mac. Michael was cool with Thriller, but after that he wasnt all that great. I was looking forward to his come back tour and maybe some new music, though.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

I was never all that fond of most of his music. Not that it wasn't good, it just wasn't my style. I for one am not terribly broken up, and not at all following the hype.

I'm sorry he is dead, but no more so than I would be almost anyone else.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

I'm not sure I've ever listened to one of his songs all the way through.

I did have an older cousin who was a fan, but I was pretty young back then and those memories are a bit hazy.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

It sounds like a lot of you actually do care about the Michael Jackson hype, just that you're against it. I honestly don't care much. I'm not super familiar with his music probably due to my lack of popular culture knowledge in general. His death didn't affect me much more than any other celebrity death, so I'm not interested in the hype or coverage.

However, his music, career, life (for better or worse) obviously did affect a lot of people, and I'm fine with that. I've personally observed people who are quite surprised that they cared as much about his death as they do. I think the effect has taken a lot of people by surprise, actually. Given the magnitude of interest by such a large number of people, I'm not surprised that the media is catering to it. And like everything else, this too will die down eventually.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

I didn't care about MJ when he was alive. Why the fuck would I start caring now?

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

I haven't really been paying attention. When famous people die, there's a lot of coverage. Elvis, Princess Diana, MJ. It's usually people I'm not much impressed with, but that's the way it goes.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

I graduated high school in 1986, had the Thriller album (everybody did)

"Not I!" said mrcoaster. Never owned "Thriller." I owned a Jackson 5 album way back when, but I was never a fan of MJ in his Thriller/etc. days and going forward. He had some good songs, but also some dreck, and if he came on the radio/MTV, I usually switched the channel ASAP.

PLEASE edit the quote error out of that post! -It looks as if I had the thriller album :klingon:

I have never owned nor shall I ever own any MJ album or have any MJ song on any of my playlists.

Its been many years since I've been a devotee of MJ in any way, but is he worth the hype? If any single performer is, it's Michael Jackson. I watched maybe 5 minutes of the memorial....the one part that got to me was when they showed him singing with the Jackson 5...I was a huge Jackson 5 fan as a kid....and let me tell you, that kid had amazing talent...compared to a lot of the child singers of the past 2 decades, MJ just blew them out of the water.

Lots of people think Elvis is a pale copy of of black soul and blues singers...no one thinks MJ is a pale copy of anything. I think in terms of real talent and singing MJ is far superior to Elvis.

Don't particularly care about MJ (dead or alive). I went to see the Hangover last night.

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

It pisses me off that nobody seems to care about Farrah Fawcett's death. You hardly hear her name mentioned at all these days, whereas MJ's name is mentioned all the fuckin' time. Farrah seems to have been forgotten already. :(

Re: Am I the only one not caring a bit about this Michael Jackson hype

Nope. I don't care either. I stopped looking at the news because of this. I have a friend who will only listen to rap music (which I hate), and Jackson's death caused him to switch to MJ's album's(which while not as offensive as rap, I still hate). I asked him why, and he said "Mike J's dead", I said "yeah, so?", he replied "He was black". Again, I said "so?", He just looked at me and said "you'll never understand".

He was right. I still don't.

Yeah, that bugs me too. I remember when Charlie's Angels was new, I wanted Farrah to adopt me (I was six at the time) since my mom convinced me that she wouldn't marry me because I was too young.

Nope, you're not; and as someone who lives in th L.A. area; I REALLY hope the LAPD charges the Jackson family for the 4 million in OT that it had to payy out to its officers for this. I've (unfortunately) had familiy members pass away, and had to pay all associated memorial and funeral costs. Considering what the Joe Jackson clan will rake in due to Michael's death; they can sure as hell afford it (imo).
